Posts from WaynamoJim in thread „The Virginian (1962-1971)“

Ok, I just checked the imdb.com site and the Gary Cooper version was made in 1929 and there were two versions before that. One in 1914 and another in 1923 and the latest version was made in 2000 and James Drury, the tv Virginian had a small role in it.

Senta, as far as I know, there's been at least three versions of The Virginian as a movie. The first was with Gary Cooper back in the early 30's, the next was with Joel McCrea in the 40's and, then there was a made for tv version on TNT just a few years back that starred Bill Pullman in the title roll. There may have been others but, those are the three that I remember.

The Virginian was one of the better western shows on tv. Of course it fell into NBC's western stable of the late 50's to the early 70's along with Bonanza and High Chaparall and all in glorious living color. It wasn't till a few years after it was on that I saw the Joel McRea movie version, that I found out that the Trampas character was really the villain of the story but, they made him a good guy for tv. And in the tv version, there was no girl for The Virginian. It was still an enjoyable show and I watched it quite abit.
