Posts from WaynamoJim in thread „What are the latest movies you bought on DvD/Blu-Ray?“

At one time, I think had about 200+ VHS movies. I then started weeding them out and replacing them with the DVD version as they came out. Now, I think have maybe about 20 VHS left, either replaced or donated without replacing them. Some VHS I had I transferred to DVD through my VCR and DVD recorder. Only a few worked, others had a copy guard. Some movies I've recorded on my DVR, then transferred to DVD. That worked out pretty good. Got some great old movies from TCM that way. I've replaced some DVD's with their Blu-ray counterpart, but only if it's a special movie to me. Did that with some of the James Bond movies and all of the Star Trek movies, and of course, Star Wars, Superman, a bunch of westerns and war movies.

    Keith and Mark,
Thanks for the words of encouragement - I began accumulating movies to watch back in the Nineties (VHS days). After spending several hundred dollars on tapes, I then switched to DVDs and spent thousands on them. And when I did, I made a promise to myself to skip the next technological advance (as we knew, there would invariably be one). Now comes Blu-Ray and here goes old Jim again. Where does it all end?

Stumpy, don't feel bad. I'm guilty of doing the same exact thing myself. I don't have $2500 worth of movies ordered from Amazon, but I've seen quite a few I would like to order. I spend a lot of time at Best Buy, but about the only movies I buy anymore are the latest popular movies like the Marvel ones, or other superhero ones, or maybe a good western if one comes out. Only thing about Best Buy is that with so many of the older movies being released on Blu-ray, Best Buy doesn't stock them. They usually just stock all the latest, good or bad, or the ones they know customers will buy. Though lately, they just got some old ones like Universals Horror movies like Frankenstein and Dracula in Blu-ray, and old musicals like Oklahoma and The King And I on Blu-ray. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

This week, picked up The Beatles first film, A Hard Days Night on Blu-ray. Part of the Criterion Collection. It's a 3 disc set with one disc the Blu-ray, one the DVD and the third disc is extras. Best Buy also had Red River by Criterion, but it was the DVD only. If they had the Blu-ray, I would've bought that instead of A Hard Days Night.

Some of the latest I bought on Blu-ray. The Nutty Professor(Jerry Lewis), Once Upon A Time In America- Directors Cut, Arrow- Season 1, Transformers: Age Of Extinction 3D, Godzilla 3D, Marvel's Agents Of Shield Season 1, Captain America: The Winter Soldier 3D, Amazing Spiderman 2, 3D.

Also coming very soon, Gary Cooper's Man Of The West, Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Missouri Breaks, Sands Of Iwo Jima.

Haven't bought it yet, but I will be hitting the sotre shortly to pick up a copy of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I did see this in theater when it came out late last winter and it was very, very good. One of the better Marvel movies since they've been coming out, though I think they're all quite good.
Also, here's a few new Blu-ray releases that are coming in the next few weeks.
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, with Zero Mostel and Phil Silvers is out this week
The Great Race, with Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Natalie Wood, out this week.
The Great Rain Robbery with Sean Connery, out next week.
South Of St. Louis with Joel McRea, out on the 23rd.
Distant Drums with Gary Cooper, out on the 23rd.
Elmer Gantry with Burt Lancaster on the 23rd.
Run Silent, Run Deep with Clark Gable and Glenn Ford on the 23rd.
Taras Bulba with Yul Brynner and Tony Curtis on the 23rd
Once Upon A Time In America: The Directors Cut with Robert DeNiro and James Woods on the 23rd.

Last week I bought a new tv. Samsung Smart 3D LED. So, of course I had to get some 3D movies to play on it. First one was Man Of Steel, even though I already had the Blu-ray. Then this week, I bought The Wizard Of Oz in 3D. Yes, the one with Judy Garland. My wife and I saw it in 3D IMAX a few months back and it was fantastic, so I got the video. It was $20 at Best Buy. Also bought the 3D version of Predator and the Blu-ray of John Waynes The Cowboys. Put them all on for a few minutes to see the pq and all very, very good. Wizard Of Oz looked very good, but Predator was incredible in 3D. Predator was only $10 and The Cowboys was $8.

Just came from my local Sams Club where I found and bought Blu-ray copies of El Dorado and Gunfight At The OK Corral. Both were $9.98, which I thought was quite reasonable. They also had Hatari and the James Dean movies, Giant, Rebel Without A Cause, and East Of Eden for the same price, $9.98 each.

I again went Blockbuster and picked up four more blu-ray titles, this time for $5.99 each. Picked up Hulk, the one with Eric Bana and Sam Eliiot, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Fantastic Four, and Young Guns. Also picked up a copy of The Lone Ranger yesterday. And today, I was at another Best Buy other than my regular stop and found they had blu-ray copies of James Deans, Giant, East Of Eden, and Rebel Without A Cause. Also had blu-ray versions of Papillon, Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon, and The Right Stuff.

time to catch up. On Black Friday, picked up a few BD's that were on the cheap side. Picked up Jack, The Giant Slayer, The Scorpion King, and American Gangster. First one was $9.99, other two were $5 each. Bought The Wolverine last week and found Dukes True Grit at Sams Club for $4.99. Today, went to a local Blockbuster that's selling everything and picked up three BD's for $6.99 each, For Greater Glory, Bullitt, and Black Hawk Down.

I bought a few lately. Was in Sams Club recently and saw Speilbergs Empire Of The Sun on Blu-ray for $10, and grabbed it. Also, found Slap Shot at Best Buy for $10 and picked it up. Yesterday, at Best Buy, found the complete series, Star Wars: the Clone Wars on blu-ray for $124 and grabbed the only copy they had. At Target, bought Man Of Steel in a special edition, that comes in book style, along with two other booklets inside for $20.

Jim, I thought that Star Trek Into Darkness was a great 3D presentation and I enjoyed how they twisted and riffed on the references to The Wrath of Khan.
That being said, I have never been a true fan of Star Trek in general and have never seen any of the seemingly infinite number of spin off series. But, being a sucker for a good deal, Amazon had a one day sale of the first 6 Trek films on Blue for $29.00. They arrived today and I plan to counterbalance them by watching some of Duke's prime films.

    We deal in lead, friend.

Didn't get to see it in 3D, but thought it was good in general. And a few months ago, when it first hit the theaters, Best Buy had some deals going on all the rest of the Star Trek stuff. I ended up getting the first 6 Star Trek films on blu-ray and in a set for a little less than you paid. Figured while I was at it, I might as well buy the Next Generation set of movies for the same price, so I did. They also had all the seasons of the original series on sale, but I didn't have the money for them, so I passed. But I did see some scenes from them in Blu-ray and they looked fabulous. You can even have a choice of how you watch them. You can watch them in their original form the way they were filmed, or you can watch the enhanced versions that they did with more up to date special effects.

Lately, bought seasons 1 & 2 of Hell On Wheels, X Men Trilogy, GI Joe:Rise Of Cobra and GI Joe: Retaliation, and Olympus Has Fallen.

On another note, upcoming Blu-ray releases:
Oct 1st- Original House Of Wax in 3D with Vincent Price

    Nov 5th
    Best Years Of Our Lives
    Giant
    East Of Eden
    Rebel Without A Cause
    The Right Stuff
    Dec 3rd
    The Black Swan
Call Of The Wild w/ Clark Gable
    Jesse James
    North To Alaska
    The Undefeated
    Also coming soon:
Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea
    The Fly w/ Vincent Price

Thanks, Mark. That retirement home recommendation is a very good idea as most residents would belong to my generation.

A few years ago, when my late brother was undergoing chemo for his cancer, I would go with him to the VA hospital and the in the chemo room there were about a dozen patients receiving their meds and they would sit and watch movies that were donated for that purpose. Most were VHS tapes and I had quite a few that I wanted to get rid of and I ended up donating them to the VA chemo room and the nurses were most glad to get them.
