The Complete Films of John Wayne by Mark Ricci is probably one of the best John Wayne filmography books available, and I think second only to Fred Landesman's "John Wayne Filmography" book. Both are indispensable when researching John Wayne's career.
A fun companion book to those is Allan Eyles' "John Wayne and the Movies".
I recommend John Wayne: in the Camera's Eye.

Thanks for the link, Lt. Brannigan. But that is my problem. I almost always refuse to pay 25 dollars or more for a book. Unless I really, really HAVE to have it. That's why I keep an eye out and wait to find one cheaper. If I get tired of waiting one day, I'll suck it up and pay that price. But, thanks for looking it up for me, I appreciate the effort.

I don't blame you, I loathe to pay more than 10 bucks for a book. And I really hate having to pay more than 5 bucks for it as well. What price do you have in mind, so that way I can keep an eye out for you. Well I checked out all the places I could find online and s the best price is 26.00 bucks.
I got another one for the list, Keith. The First Rebel, by Neil H. Swanson. The movie Allegheny Uprising was made from this book. It's one of the few I don't have. Every time I see one on ebay, it goes for far more than I am willing to spend. So, I keep an eye out and bide my time.

I've always been digusted with Gary Wills, as he reminds me quite a bit of Kitty Kelly. You know, the old "I'll write anything, mostly lies" to get published. Of course, a fair number (not all, mind you) of our friends in the press eat it up, as it's "old fashioned" to have the same type values as John Wayne.
All I can say is: "Call me 'old fashioned' forever!!"

Garry Wills book is one I am never planning on reading. Books like that are an extreme kneejerk reaction by the Left Wing groups that were always ridiculing him.
I absolutely loved John Wayne American. It was for lack of a better word, a beautiful book and hands down the best Duke Biography I have read.

Reading through this thread, that seems to be the general consensus. I bought it for two reasons, 1: it comes highly recommended by this board. 2: It's supposed to be over 700 pages.
I just have to say how much I loved "Duke; We're glad we knew you" By Herb Fagen. It's one of my all time favorite Duke books now. I got the newest edition which was released to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Duke's passing.
I really liked the article by Glendon Swarthout's son Miles entitled "Duke's Last Ride".
I highly recommend this book.
And I just ordered John Wayne: American looking forward to that one.
What are those two books like? i was considering getting them but the low page count always makes me shy away from them.
I love it. and I would recommend it to anyone that's a Duke fan. As for the latter book that you asked about, I have yet to read that one.

Speaking for myself, my favorites are "Shooting Star" by Maurice Zolotow (I have a copy autographed by the Duke himself - I know he didn't like the book but I sent him a copy and he autographed it anyway); "John Wayne - American" by Randy Roberts and James Olson; "Duke: The Life and Times of John Wayne" by Donald Shepherd and Robert Slatzer; "There Rode A Legend" by Jane Pattie and the filmography by Allen Eyles.
