Posts from ethanedwards in thread „Books on Duke- Past Discussion (Archive)“

    Hi
Another small book on Stagecoach is the York Film Notes published by Longman York Press.
This is a serious book for anyone studying the film with 88 pages first published 2000.

    Regards

    Arthur

    Arthur,
    thanks for mentioning this one,
as I have now added it to our list.
    Duke's Movie Books

It is as follows from the Amazon write up

These books were mentioned in another thread

From the BFI Film classics series

The BFI series is especially noteworthy because of their use of filmcells instead of still photographs.
By using the actual film to illustrate you'll see pictures in these books you haven't seen before,
(each entry of a copy into the British Film Institute
is accompanied by such a book).

    THE SEARCHERS by Edward Buscombe
This is a detailed commentary on all aspects of the film, "The Searchers",
and makes full use of material in the John Ford archive in Indiana,
including Ford's own memos and the original scripts,
which differs in vital respects from the film he made.

    STAGECOACH by Edward Buscombe
Shedding new light on an old favorite, this is an enjoyable account of how "Stagecoach "was made.
This book combines a with a careful scene-by-scene analysis, a wealth of illustrations
and the most complete credits yet assembled.

    RED RIVER, by Suzanne Liandrat-Guigues
This is in interesting read. Written from the French standpoint of film critics,
and from the Cahiers de Cinema as their center stone, the author looks at Red River
with Hawks as an "auteur" in mind.
This study explores the thematic complexity of Red River, as well as its historical resonances
and its place in film history.
The author focuses on the actors' contribution to the movie and on Red River's
relationship to other Howard Hawks movie classics.

There appears to be a few books coming out this year, I thought I was aware of all of them! Then I noticed on amazon this book "When the legend became fact-The true life of John Wayne" by Richard Douglas Jensen. Anybody know anything about this book and author? I ask because I was contemplating ordering this. Thanks for any help in this matter.

Someday, great find, and many thanks for this.
I have added this new book to our list
Here's what the publishers have to say

New John Wayne biography zooms to top of UK, US Kindle sales
    * When The Legend Became Fact - The True Life of John Wayne has zoomed to the top of the UK Kindle sales rankings on Amazon.com and sits at # 5 in US rankings in the six days since the book's release.
    * A meticulously researched and starkly written expose' into the true life of Hollywood's cowboy icon, the book contains startling revelations about John Wayne's personal life -- his affairs, his alcoholism, his fits of explosive violence, his mammoth insecurities -- all traits not associated with the image of the public John Wayne. The book further details the actor's many private falls from grace, all the while his public image was protected by an army of publicists who portrayed him as the quintessential American icon.
    * When The Legend Became Fact - The True Life of John Wayne, by Richard Douglas Jensen, is available in print and Kindle formats exclusively from Amazon.com.

So looking forward to this book being published by the estate of JW. I have high hopes that we will get a rare insight into the Big fellow, and see photo's that have not been seen before. Perhaps an opportunity to also answer alot of the garbage that has been written over the years. I don't think it is going to be that kind of book though. What hopes do others have for this book? Does anyone know the date it is to be release, I have various dates but would like a definitive one? Any information or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Someday, this book and all the information is discussed here
    http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=466&page=43

A friend just gave me a John Wayne book of his films. Nice book I have a magazine that was printed in the 70's that has a listing and synopsis of all his films with pics this adds to it. Mark Ricci and two other authors wrote the book.

Jh, yes it is a good book, mine is now falling apart
but I still use it as a good reference point, for this forum.

Here is our dedicated thread on
    Duke's Books

THE COMPLETE FILMS OF JOHN WAYNE, by Zmiewsky and Ricci
First edition done in 1970, when the True Grit Oscar brought a new interest to JW’s career, next edition (as “The COMPLETE Films of…”) came after his death. Probably the first time somebody took the time to count the films and assemble stills to each and every one of them. Still considered to be the definite list – although in the meantime many silent films in which JW participated, sometimes as a crowd extra – aren’t mentioned here.
If you are looking for John Wayne films this is the book to have. It tells what the film is about, who also starred in and what year it was made. It also has plenty of photos to help you recognize what movie it is and if it is the one you are looking for. The book has some interesting facts about some of the movies

Thanks to Kevin and Duke Pilgrim,
I have now entered this fantastic new book
    in our thread
    Duke's Books.

Amazon have the hardback cover on sale in November

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/John-…F8&qid=1313232694&sr=1-12

I recommend John Wayne: in the Camera's Eye.

http://www.amazon.com/John-Way…TF8&qid=1299536794&sr=8-1 That's a good starting point anyway. It even has some closeups of Duke sans toupee.

    Here's our post in
    Dukes' Books
    relating to it

JOHN WAYNE – IN THE CAMERA EYE, by Sam Shaw
If you want to see the private man JW, with his kids, with his wife, at his desk, between shots (lots of Alamo pictures here) AND if you’re interested in the art of photography: Sam Shaw captured it beautifully.

Stuntman!: My Car-Crashing, Plane-Jumping, Bone-Breaking, Death-Defying Hollywood Life. A new Book by stuntman Hal Needham. Probably more famous for his collaborations with Burt Reynolds in the 70s and 80s, he also worked often with Duke.

Looks like a great read, but one of the "blurbs" I read had a comment from Hal stating he taught Duke how to throw a movie punch(?!).

    Thanks for this,
I have also copied this to the dedicated thread,
Books By Pals Of The Saddle

As this post and the following speak about Duke's horses,
I have moved them across to the dedicated thread

    Here is our up-to-date list
    Books About Duke

I have now added some other 'forgotten' books
    to the list
As the lists become more and more, and harder to navigate,
I have now compiled two seperate listings,
    Books On Duke
    Books On Duke's Movies

    New 'forgotten' additions

THE QUOTABLE JOHN WAYNE: The Grit and Wisdom of an American Icon-Carol Lea Mueller
Perhaps best known for his classic movie lines, such as Fill your hands, you sons-a-bitches from True Grit, the late actor John Wayne often displayed a spontaneous and biting wit away from the screen as well. This gem of inspiration contains Wayne anecdotes on God and country, the old West, friends and family, acting, and quotes from others about John Wayne the actor, and John Wayne the man.

JOHN WAYNE - A Western Celebration -Jane Pattie
John Wayne A Western Celebration, is just that, A Western Celebration! This beautifully produced volume is a stunning, comprehensive visual work showcasing the entire collection of the Westerns and rare and vintage movie posters of John Wayne's career.

The stories of the making of such epic films as
El Cid, King Of Kings, Fall Of The Roman Empire, and John Wayne's
    Circus World.
    Many B&W photographs

I've got a hardcover book that my son gave for Father's Day in 1997 called "The Von Hoffmann Brothers BIG DAMN BOOK OF SHEER MANLINESS"
It's a good natured read that addresses the epitome of manliness including Guns, Games of Chance, Chili Cookoffs, Whiskey, Beer and Bar Bets.
On the cover is a photo of Capt Nathan Brittles, a jar of tabasco sauce, Tequila and Victor McLaglen. There's a four page article about Vic, a large article about John Ford's Stock Company and a 6 page article about Duke, with pictures. They also reprint the original stories from Stage to Lordsburg and The Quiet Man.
One anecdote concerns Duke's disgust with all the blood and makeup planned for his demise in The Cowboys. Wayne showed up "exceptionally snockered" and all the blood was used up. Wayne asked for more blood to be used, but was told that he had drank it all.

This is obviously not a work solely about the Duke, but he's in it a lot and it's a neat read.

    Thanks for your contribution,
I have included the book in
Books On Duke and His Movies
