Found this article from December:
Fess Parker struck ratings gold again in a coonskin cap, this time as “Daniel Boone.”
Like his previous hero, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone was one of American’s greatest real life folk heroes. He hunted, trapped, fished and explored the frontier of the American Southeast. Daniel’s immediate family included his wife, Rebecca, played by the lovely Patricia Blair; his daughter, Jemima, played by Veronica Cartwright; and his young son, Israel, played by Darby Hinton.
His best friend and traveling companions were Mingo and Yadkin. Actors Ed Ames and Albert Salmi essayed these roles. In nearby Boonesborough, spunky old Cincinnatus, played by Dallas McKennon, ran the tavern.
As with all series that become enormous hits, the casts often change quite a bit and so it did with “Daniel Boone.” Albert Salmi left after the first season and in time, Robert Logan was added as Jericho Jones; Roosevelt Grier as Gabe Cooper; Don Pedro Colley as Gideon and singer Jimmy Dean came aboard as trapper Josh Clement.
“Daniel Boone” was first broadcast in black and white, then in color. The show debuted on the NBC Network at an hour in length on Sept. 24, 1964, and ran for six years before departing the lineup on Aug. 27, 1970.
Fess Parker, Albert Salmi, Patricia Blair, Jimmy Dean and Dallas McKennon have all passed away.
Although this series was a highly fictionalized account of Boone’s exploits, the writing was excellent and the show was exciting and involving. Some of the location work was done in Kanab, Utah, and most of the filming was done at The Fox Ranch in Malibu Canyon, Calif.
Ted White was the stunt coordinator and also the double for Fess Parker.
Side notes on “Daniel Boone:”
Darby Hinton, now in his late 50s, has been a very popular guest star at the various film festivals. He will be appearing at the Williamsburg Festival, Virginia, in March and along with Roosevelt Grier at Memphis in June.
Besides Hinton, I also met Patricia Blair and Ted White.
My friend, stuntman/actor Neil Summers, worked on five episodes of “Daniel Boone” and he said every cast member was a joy to be around. The “Daniel Boone” series is currently running daily on the INSP and MYTV channels.
