Posts from Gorch in thread „Steve McQueen“

Didn't mean to mislead you all. I think McQueen's finest performances - and films as a whole - may be "Junior Bonner" and
"Sand Pebbles" - but I wouldn't recommend them first to a newcomer. I was just trying to highlight the films where Steve came across as most commanding in his physical use of props; his signature anti-authority persona; and where he competed with other good actors and stole the spotlight. "Hell is for Heroes" fits that criteria, but to a lesser extent. Seven and Escape are the two that led to his superstardom.
He didn't always hit it out of the park. I'd rather watch Duke in "The Conqueror" than Steve in "Enemy of the People" again.

Neither of those movies represent McQueen at his finest. My personal favorites are "Magnificent Seven" and "Great Escape". Both have large male casts but McQueen really shines.

One of the contributers to this forum, JuniorMike, has co-authored a new book "Steve McQueen - the Actor and his Films" which is on sale at Amazon.
The book is a massive coffee table volume and filled with rare movie scene stills and candid images. It is very well researched and richly detailed.
Mike is probably reluctant to tout his own handiwork, but I've got my copy of this and have spent many hours with my nose stuck in it since Christmas.
    Extremely well done and recommended.

Hi Ethan. Didn't mean to be redundant, just missed the quote.
I met McQueen in 1972 when I was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. We had heard he was in town and shooting at the San Antone depot, so I went with a friend to rubberneck.
There was security around the filming, but McQueen was sitting shirtless on a lawn chair, sunning himself and drinking beers from a cooler. He saw our uniforms and motioned us over. He asked where we were from and knew both of our local hometown breweries. Very impressive.
We shot the breeze for a couple minutes and then left. We thought he was a pretty nice guy, but later learned he had probably just slept with co star Ali MacGraw. We also realized that he never offered us one of his beers.
