Posts from Gorch in thread „New Westerns“

I regret I wasn't clearer, Batjac. My intent was to underscore that someone was unfamiliar with the Hatfield and McCoy feud. Of course, I'm old enough to have met the original participants.
Thanks for the chance to clear that up.

And it was a damn fine production. Just finished watching all six hours from my DVR. Absolutely engrossing. Of course now, I'm going to have to research to see how accurate it was.
I believe it's been announced on DVD already so try a rental in the near future.

Brynner, McQueen, Coburn, Bronson, Vaughn, Dexter and Buchholz are the only acceptable cast for this old fan. Eli Wallach is the one and only Calvera.
Tom Cruise is a pint sized egotist, but I applaud his good taste in films. But why remake classics, like "True Grit" or this when there are so many less successful films that justify a new spin?
Besides, a remake would just have to re-record Bernstein's monumental score to have any chance of success. The music is almost inseparable from the movie and anything less would draw negative remarks.
I vote to just re-release the 1960 version.

Jay is right (as usually) about "Hell on Wheels". I thought some of the minor characters were a bit creaky at first but the plot is advancing nicely and I look forward to each episode.

Be warned that I have read the book that this western will be based on and it's about Doc's life as a boy and young man. The Earps are in it but we don't go near Tombstone and the OK Corral.
It was a decent enough read and all Doc's lines were written as if Val Kilmer was speaking them and if this is a mini series they may even go farther than the novel.
