Posts from ethanedwards in thread „True Grit (2010)“

I watched the remake yesterday. I agree with many who say Jeff Bridges' Rooster is a darker, moodier character. Wayne gave Rooster a joy of life that Bridges' character just doesn't have. I enjoyed the gospel oriented soundtrack of the remake but it does seem to add to the overall somber mood of the film. The original was a more fun movie to watch--brighter and with a sense of humor to counter the violence. That said, I enjoyed the remake and will watch it again. It stands on its own as a good western.

Many thanks for joining us and your very first post.
    I have extended an official
    WELCOME
    Here

I really enjoyed this movie when I went too see it at the cinema a few months ago with my father who happily remarked that it was just Duke but not as good, though I still enjoyed it. This made me curious about the original as I had always seen Duke as a guy my father and grandfather loved from their childhoods and knew little about him outside his Wiki page but after watching the original I was hooked and have a become a huge Duke fan. Even for the fans who hated this film they can take comfort that it has made many including myself a Duke fan, if nothing else.

    Gareth,
Interesting observation and one we have found to be true.
I think many who have seen the remake, looked out for the original,
and hence like yourself became Duke fans.
We are obviously unsure to what Duke would have made of it
but you can be sure that he would be pleased
that the western genre was still alive and kicking.

Sorry Guys I guess i had one too many last night. I didn't mean to offend anyone, I
obviously know you are the True Fans. I do stick by my sentiment that the remake crew did not pay enough(or any) respect to the original or the Duke. As for being a troll I posted here before under other screen names, as I changed email over the years I've had to changed my screen names. I'll post something more positive next time.

As I said Trevor we are a forum that allows healthy discussion,
and that's why your post remained on the board.
Obviously your points will offend members here,
as we feel we are the only John Wayne community
that genuinely develops all about Duke's image and legacy.

The fact that you have apoligised is a start for what I hope
will be a more positive contribution on your part.

    Trevor,

First off, Welcome to the forum.
This forum, has and always will be,one that allows healthy discussion,
unlike the Official one, which has not allowed a single remark on the movie.
Incidently your post, would not have seen the light of day on that forum.

The posts on the True Grit -Remake, I feel have remained a generally
healthy discussion on a new movie, that can only be good for the western genre.
The fact that the Cohens have disregarded Duke is of no consequence,
    although it has been mentioned.
It is to the merits of the new movie, that was under discussion.
and it appears that it is well received by the majority of members.

Perhaps there maybe some justice in the fact,
that Duke won an Oscar for his role,
whereas the new movie didn't win even one!

I am sorry you have taken the attitude of you've 'finally had it',
as I feel Duke would be disappointed, you are leaving his true fans.

Best wishes, and thanks for joining us,
    the Official board awaits you!!

Thanks very much for moving the posts, Keith. Since it concerned the NTG, I wanted to do the same thing but didn't know how.

BTW, Keith, I thought someone (Todd from Minnesota?) had posted a link (which I didn't open) that supposedly said the NTG would open in the UK on 16 January. Or was that just a figment of my imagination?

No Jim, you're not losing your memory,
NTG is now released in the UK cinemas,
and I will try and see it when I return.

Looks like January 14th is the UK relase date.

To those of you who insist you'll forego seeing the NTG because to do so would besmirch the Duke's good name, let me call your attention to a post of mine that was made several years ago.

What you're doing is cutting off your nose to spite your face. The NTG is not, repeat not, a great Western but it definitely is a good Western worth seeing.

    Jim,
thanks for searching your old discussion on this,
and I have moved the new posts over to here where the
the new discussion is taking place.
I agree with you both and although having not seen the movie,
    this was my previous post

Being in the UK, I have not had the pleasure of seeing this movie.
I will say this, we must treat the two movies, the original and this one as for what they are,
they are two seperate movies and must be seen as that.

The new movie does not in anyway tarnish the legacy or image of Duke,
and if it's being does in fact generate interest in the Western genre,
then I am sure Duke would look down on it favourably.

It would be nice to see more westerns made, there there have been very few off the top of my head the last one i can think of is Unforgiven, I am a sci-fi fan as well and I saw a preview for a new Harrison Ford movie called Cowboys and Alien's I thought it looked interesting,

Not to drift anymore off topic, dare I metion,
    Open Range..2003

    Hi Deen Macheen,
I have made a formal Welcome on the dedicated thread.

Hey,my mame is Jim and i am from Boston,I have been a big John Wayne fan all my life. The thing that made me look for a John Wayne fan page is the remake of True Grit,I have seen the new movie and i liked it,not as much as the 1st one,It just seem's that the Cohen brothers and Matt Damon have gone out of there way to dis the Duke and his movie when i have seen them on interview's the last few week's,has any one else felt this way? Great site Jim

    Hi Jim

    WELCOME to The JWMB-
The Original John Wayne Message Board
where fans come to have fun!

    Please take a look around,
we're a friendly bunch of folks,
and there is a wealth of information to see,
    regarding the great man.

You may find these links useful:-

    Thanks for that Jim,
Interesting trailer, maybe we'll have to see how Bridges checks out.
We are biased, so perhaps we should view the movie as if
it was nothing to do with Duke!!

Although there is bound to be cross reference between the
two movies, the last few posts were specifially about Duke's True Grit,
I have copied them over to the dedicated thread.

I know that Hathaway wanted Duke to sport a mustache and he refused on grounds that moviegoers came to see his face.

Suprised to hear that Duke said this, particually when you consider
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon was Duke's favourite film,
and in that movie isn't he wearing a moustache??
Didn't seem to do his popularity much harm then!!!

Let's see, as mentioned before, it's not about playing Duke,
it's about playing the character in the movie,
and will the movie stand up on it's own.
Duke will of course be a hard act to follow!
