Posts from Stumpy in thread „Thanksgiving“

Forgot to add - being the political animal I am, I just had to solicit my kin's views on Sarah (to start with) and then on politics in general. Imagine my consternation when my sister AND daughter (for gosh sakes) revealed their admiration for the prez preceding George W. and their even stronger admiration for his wife. Naturally, this set off a wild political shouting match between the three of us (plus my two grand-nieces) which made my day. :))): :thanksgiving: :))):

As I'm sure you know, politics makes my world go 'round.

Man, it's a good thing we had plenty of food for the holiday meal because my three grandsons from my older son (ages 14, 19 & 22) ate like horses. Also, my youngest brother (age 53), whom we weren't expecting but who decided to accompany my sister, ate like two horses. But as I told my wife, it's probably been many a moon since any of them had a decent homecooked meal and they were only taking advantage of an opportunity.

My brother is a bachelor who lives alone and eats mostly TV dinners and in restaurants while my three grandsons lost their mother (who was a lousy cook anyway) to some kind of rare disease 5 or 6 years ago. So they too hardly ever get the opportunity for a good, all-you-can-eat meal.

Anyway, we ended the day with hardly any leftovers at all and usually we end Thanksgiving with enough leftovers for a month or so of eating. A mixed blessing, I guess, because my sister has decided to reciprocate and have Christmas at her house for the wife and me.

BTW, Jeff, what kind of surgery did you have? Hope the recovery is going well.

Thanksgiving is the ONLY holiday I thoroughly enjoy with no qualms at all because in our family at least, it's a day for just visiting with kids, grandkids, siblings, (parents if they're still living - mine aren't) and any other family members. Though my wife is at the age where she can no longer easily prepare those huge meals for 30-35 people, she occasionally feels better and so today, we're expecting our daughter with her two, the three boys from my oldest son (son didn't make it), my only sister with two of her grandkids and one greatgrandkid. So we'll have about 12 for turkey, ham, cornbread dressing, giblet gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, dinner rolls, cranberry relish, fruit salad and iced tea. All in all, a reminder of good times past.

    P.S.
I've become so accustomed to our peace and quiet, I'll be glad when the day is over and everyone has gone home.

    George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Thank you, Arthur. Don't know if they have a comparable holiday in the UK but if so, you have one too.

The wife and I are leaving early this morning for east Texas to spend Thanksgiving with our oldest son and his 3 sons. His wife died in August of peritonitis (sp) caused by a perforated ulcer and so I'm not sure it will be a real happy occasion but at least we'll be together.
