"The Comancheros!" This has to be one of the most FUN John Wayne Westerns!
It's basically a "buddy cop" movie, but with an old west setting! One of my favorites!

Last night, I watched my all time favorite movie; "True Grit!" The John Wayne version of course! Last week I watched the 2010 version; I like it too, but the original will always be my favorite!
I watched "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", the new Cohen Brothers movie on Netflix last night. Got to say, I hated it!
If you're a fan of art-house movies, which I'm not, or the Cohen Brother, which apparently I'm not, you might want to check it out; I just found it to be too weird for my taste!
It's six short stories; the first one is kind of funny. With very dark humor, it's a satire on the fine line between good guys and bad guys! The other stories, I just found to be weird, pointless and very depressing!
So if artsy movies are your thing, check it out, as for me, I'm going back to the classics!
Over the last three weekends I watched "The Calvary Trilogy", all four of them! (Ok, so I added "The Horse Soldiers into the mix")
1. "RIO GRANDE" - All of the experts tell me that this is the weakest of the trilogy, but being the stubborn guy that I am, this is my favorite of the three! The reason; the paring of Duke and Maureen O'Hara, and my favorite character, the action hero of the story, Tyree, played by Ben Johnson, who I thought stole the movie! Harry Carey Jr. was great in this one too as Tyree's sidekick; he was very funny as the smart-alecky sarcastic Texan (I can relate to that!)
2. "FORT APACHE" - Just a great movie; while "Rio Grande" is my personal favorite, this, in my opinion is the best of the trilogy.
3. "SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON" - This is one of the movies (along with "Red River", "The Quiet Man" and "The Searchers" among others) that I point to whenever one someone tells me that John Wayne only played one character and was a lousy actor! (Believe it or not, there are people out there that say that!) He was great in this one! Very good classic!
4. "THE HORSE SOLDIERS" - This one is not part of the trilogy, but I included it here anyway! Not being one of my favorites, I haven't seen it in awhile. As far as Civil War dramas go, this is a good one!
To celebrate Kirk Douglas' 100th Birthday, I watched "The War Wagon!"
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid; I still love it! Just a fun movie with action and humor! Haven't watched it in a long time and enjoyed it all over again!
“The Lone Ranger” from 1956, and “The Lone Ranger and The Lost City of Gold” from 1958, both starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels.
I saw the new “Lone Ranger” movie, which I thought was great. I had a great time watching that movie. It was one fun ride, and one of my new favorite movies. But as much as I like it, it’s just not THE Lone Ranger! So this weekend, I got out my old DVD’s of these two movies, and enjoyed them once again!
For what are basically B Movies, these films are really good! They’re not just extended episodes of the TV series, but actually well written, enjoyable films. I especially like “The Lost City of Gold”, because Jay Silverheels had a little more to do as Tonto than he did in the old series.
(Side note: I got to meet Clayton Moore back in 1986 when hecame to my hometown, in character as “The Lone Ranger” for a Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration. He was a great guy and real gentleman)
“The Lone Ranger” (2013)
Had to go see this movie - when I was a kid, before I discovered John Wayne, there was The LoneRanger!
This is not the “The Lone Ranger” we grew up with, and while no one can replace Clayton Moore as the Ranger, I found myself really liking this take on the story. Here, the villains are darker, there’s a spaghetti western look in some scenes, and even a little bit of a Weird Western element. There’s also a lot of humor and lots of action. This is the most fun I’ve had at the movies in a long time. It’s the type of “take a break from reality” escapism that I like. One fun ride!
“The Lawless Nineties”
It’s something I can’t say very often, but here’s a JohnWayne western I had never seen until now. It’s one of the Republic B-Westernsfrom the mid-thirties, and a good one!
The Duke, on the big screen, (At the Rialto Theater in Denison, Texas) in my favorite, "True Grit".
First time in a long time that I've seen Duke on the big screen! They had showings of "Red River" and "The Green Berets" earlier in the year that I had to miss, but wasn't about to miss this one! Fun night!
THE DAWN RIDER (2012)
The remake of the old John Wayne Lone Star Western from the 30's. This one stars Christian Slater and Donald Sutherland.
BAD MOVIE! I thought if they just had to remake old movies, then remake the old B Westerns. That way they could flesh out the characters a little more and add a little depth to the story. BUT NO! THEY ACTUALLY MADE IT WORSE!
This one was poorly written, the acting wasn't much, and, well, it was just bad all the way around! Why do they have to use the "F Word" so much! It just makes the dialog sound so idiotic!
Also, a very dull ending....I missed the big fight scene and Yakima Canutt Stunt work!!!
Makes me appreciate the old "Lone Star Oaters" a little bit more!
In honor of Duke's birthday, I watched "The Alamo"
Still one of the best! (And this wasn't even the director's cut!)
"The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" On the big screen!
There's a theater in town that shows classic movies. Three weeks ago, for the opening weekend they had "Red River" (Missed that one, didn't see it advertised!).
For anyone in Texomaland the websight is www.rialtodenison.com
"Paleface" with Bob Hope. I haven't watched this movie in years....laughed out loud several times throughout the movie!
"Riders of Destiny"
The scene where "Singing Sandy" sings to the gunman before he puts him out of business....Classic!
A John Wayne double feature...
"The Fighting Kentuckian" - Very fun "B" Movie (with Duke playing a Davy Crockett like character named John Breen)
"The Alamo" - One of my all time favorite movies.
THE WAR WAGON
Fun movie!
Unusually lazy weekend for me....Just watched "Open Range" after watching two more "Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr." episodes". Friday I watched my favorite Spaghetti Western, "Once Upon a Time in the West", and Saturday watched "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"
(When it's 110 degrees outside, even those of us that prefer the outdoors like to find something to do indoors. Thank goodness for classic Westerns!)
and Olivia Wilde is never hard on the eyes.
Mark
Yep! You got that right!
I might need to change my review because it sounds like I didn't like it much (I would never make a very good critic). I really did enjoy the movie. I thought they got the sci-fi/horror part of the story right. My problem was with the cowboys! I just don't think modern Hollywood writers understand what makes a good Western character. They're not bad characters, they're just modern dark comic book characters that lacked that cowboy sense of humor and "let's go kick their butt" type attitude that would have worked better (IMHO) in this type of story. But besides that, as far as "Weird Western" movies go, this is probably the best one in a few years.
COWBOYS AND ALIENS.
Not bad, but not that great either…just another big budget comic book style movie with action, special effects, and not much more.
With a title like “Cowboys and Aliens” you can’t really expect much of a story, but with a concept like that, I was expecting a little more humor to it…some old style B movie cheesy fun. But the filmmakers took the idea more seriously than I expected.
In short, fun but forgettable! Guess comic book stories just aren’t my thing! Just a good excuse to get out to the movies once again!
"Lonesome Dove"
It took me 4 nights, but had to watch this classic story once again.
