I agree with you, that John Wayne's movies should all have been at the top of the list.

From our perspective, you can't get much farther west than Australia, hence, "western".
Everybody in the movie is ridin' around on horses . . . with some of the most impressive riding scenes of any movie, western or not.
It appears to take place in the same general time frame as other westerns.
Looks like a western to me! 
And my wife says the music from it is great.
