I haven’t watched this movie in years. I don’t remember it. I recently read reviews about it which were mixed. I don’t necessarily put stock in reviews. The negative reviews seemed to be the movie was more of a soap opera and disconnected. And that John Wayne didn’t have much screen time. Again, I have read negative reviews before and found them completely wrong. I will watch it again and see.

I've always enjoyed the film. Duke gets plenty of screen time. The one thing that strikes me funny is when during the attack on Pearl Harbor....you never see any planes.

It's not a bad movie at all. Its downsides are too many subplots and the not-so special effects of the naval battle which really suck. Supposedly Kirk Douglas offered to Otto Preminger that he would personally pay for better effects but was turned down.
Duke played his role with understatement and dignity. Some say it may have been due to his cancer which wasn't discovered until after filming which could have affected his energy level.
