One of the great "what ifs" of recent American politics concerns what might have happened if McCain had won the Republican nomination in 2000 instead of George W Bush and gone on to be elected President. Obviously, 9/11 would still most likely have happened and there'd still have been an aggressive US response (since doing nothing would have been politically impossible), but I suspect an experienced military man like McCain - who, crucially, could hardly be more personally aware of the downside of campaigns going wrong - would have approached it rather more intelligently.
Politically, McCain and I are poles apart, but he was demonstrably a man of honour and principle right to the end. And anyone who could effectively sentence himself to five years' incarceration in appalling conditions with more or less daily beatings because he stood by his principles (famously, he could have been freed if he'd played the card that his father was a four-star admiral, but he refused to do so unless other PoWs were released too) was clearly a pretty formidable human being.

Dear "Friends of Palestine" across this world,
My name is Gina Goldstein. I was born in Paris on June 5th, 1936.
I was the daughter of Rachmil, born May 5th in 1910 and Genia, born on the 14th of February 1913.
We lived in Paris.
Less than two months after my sixth birthday and some weeks after each of my parents had been deported on separate transports, I was deported to Auschwitz.
My last memory of this world is when i was processed after the selection upon my arrival.

The tactical alliance by the far left with conservative and radical Islamic forces is strange until you remember that said clerico-fascists eagerly kill or main any westerners and Jews they can. (sarcasm mode) Apparently "the liberation of Palestine" requires killing people from distant countries such as Nepalese farming students and Thais? (end sarcasm mode)

Outside Frankfurt Town Hall, flying Israeli and Ukrainian flags. The Germans are determined to be on the right side of history for once.

For all its "some things were still classified" difficulties, There's also only one excellent WWII doco:

The only good WWII movies have Kenneth More or Jack Hawkins in them.

I would rate Buddhism at the top of the world's religions. OTOH in ten Muslim majority countries you get the death penalty if you decide you don't want to be Muslim any more.

Thank you for helping me with my thread, Kevin. I knew a Kevin in school. Shy boy, bit of a nerd. I agreed to be his date/girl on his arm at a dance after some classmates bullied him horribly. I had Mom make me look as pretty as possible so Kevin would feel good. As beautiful a dress as possible for the same reason - i wanted so much to make sure that that young boy had the happiest night of his life.
I don't know where Kevin is today - I've tried to trace him multiple times.

Kevin i wanted this thread to be about Samantha. Perfectly innocent. I couldn't delete the off-topic drift and i should not have indulged it.

While she and Duke possibly would have been at odds, she was of noble and heartwarming intent and reminded us that it is the world's children that will have to live with the consequences of what we do.

The Queen is dead. Long live the King.
My grandfather and great-grandfather were veterans of the Second and First World Wars, respectively.
All I said when I added my note to the Books of Condolences (both the Australian and British ones) was this:
"Rest easy, ma'am. Your work is all done here. We - and your son - have the watch".

*hugs* and care to anyone who wishes for them.

Hi all. I was in exile on Tatooine.
To make up for it, here's me as a kid!

I just want to remember a little girl from Maine who wrote a letter to an 'Evil Empire and led America on a tour of the Soviet Union.

Remember shows where cutesy kids sung current or classic songs to make the adults watching go "aww!"?
Of course, these shows often didn't check whether the lyrics were still OK when sung by a child. Think six year old girl singing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend".
