That was some grudge, don't you think? Since The Robe was released back in 1953, and they divorced in 1960 after they married in 1950. Come on, you made that up. I don't know the reason for the divorce, but I hardly doubt it was because of that.

The Robe was being filmed early in 1953. Burton made some critical remarks about McCarthy and the HUAC. Some people believe this may have prevented him from ever winning an Oscar.

The Black Knight was a truly awful movie but Ladd was even worse in Duel of the Champions.
The Black Knight was awful. Ladd was too old for the part and badly miscast as an Englishman in the Middle Ages.
I didn't get around to seeing this movie until 2003. I remember thinking, wow, this film was made in 1957 and Peck, Heston, Simmons and Baker are all still alive. Now Baker is the only one left.
King of Kings was better.

The three younger brothers were all right, it was actually Duke who stood out because he looked so much older than the others.
I quite liked a version I saw with Sterling Hayden. The Man from the Alamo with Glenn Ford was a bit poor though.

I think nowadays it is seen as being racist, sexist and homophobic, like other old British TV series like On the Buses. What people now don't seem to realize is that forty years ago it was probably groundbreaking to include black and gay characters at all.

Fine, I don't know whether that's really true. In Michael Munn's biography of Wayne, Heston is quoted as saying there seemed to be pretty good reasons for him not to make the movie. He then agrees that the fact that Wayne was directing was one of them.
Perhaps heston could have played Colonel Travis, I mean at least he couldn't have done a worse job than Laurence Harvey.
I must admit I'm surprised Chill Wills was nominated, I mean his performance here was no different than most of his other westerns.
Clint just said he didn't bother replying to Duke's letter and that was the end of that. I doubt though that they could have worked together because after Dirty Harry Clint was the Number 1 star in Hollywood and probably wouldn't have taken second billing to anyone.
Well I think really he should have let John Ford direct all of it rather than just a bit. Aside from being overlong, the main reason The Alamo was bad was because of Duke's ponderous direction. Laurence Harvey was badly miscast but Richard Widmark was good as Bowie.

Bill, I think he knew it would be bad because Duke was directing the movie. That was also why Charlton Heston didn't want to play Bowie.
