Regarding THE LAST COMMAND, I agree with Arthur.
Although I enjoyed the film, I fould I couldnt take it too seriously
Duke would have made THE ALAMO, with Republic, and saved all his money and stress!!
Republic of course, used lots of Duke's visions, for that film.

It is strange, as Chester and Hondo, and Arthur mentioned,
I too,(as one gets more confidence with the site,
and it's hopefully not full of "nutters", thanks to the moderators,)(apart from myself, that is!)
find that a little more on the personal profile
    doesn't do any harm.
I thought you three, posted really nice profiles, and there is no doubt, that it helps you to know, who you are talking to.
Posting personal details, is of course, a matter of individual choice,
as but as Chester said, a little bit more would be better.
    Especially where, you live!

    Hi,
Really been interested in your debate about the real Alamo, and the local issues, surrounding it!
The "Other" Alamo film, THE LAST COMMAND,
remember that one, Republic made as a get back at Duke film.
After watching THE ALAMO, this one almost seemed like a comedy, especially, when you compared the two Davy Crocketts.
That story line, to me, also seemed muddled!
I know Dukes Alamo, came in for some stick historically, but I know, who's version I beleive!,but then I would, wouldn't I!!!

    Hi Honoary Limey Ringo,

It's fantastic to hear of your connections with the UK, and indeed to hear of your late military friend.
As you are all aware, we celebrated VE day here on Sunday, and the day, was special to us, because it will probably be the last big remembrance,
Most of the Vets, are now passing on, and from next year I believe, there is to be a day, in between VE and VJ day, so has to eliminate having two dates, not everyone however, is quite happy with that!
We have had extensive TV coverage of the War, and it has been a constant reminder to us all, of the ultimate sacrifice all our young men did, to secure, the freedom, that we so much cherish today.

    TO ALL MY ILLUSTRIOUS FRIENDS,

You may all find this odd for a limey, but I have a great fascination for the Pacific War, and have an expansive collection of docs. and films ,One of them, HELL IN THE PACIFIC
was very good, did you have that, in the States?
I've twice had the great honour of visiting Pearl Harbor, and I was totally in awe of the whole situation.
Being on The Arizona Memorial, was one of the most moving, moments of my life!

    Hi Ringo,

    Thanks,
in John Wayne American, Duke is quoted as saying, that he liked Clints films, and recognized elements of his own work at every turn. Just like Ringo Kid and Ethan Edwards, Clints character are hard-boiled, steely-eyed, cynical, loners, willing to draw a gun and shoot predators. Duke also noticed the differences, he thought Clint exaggerated the persona. He mentions that if it had been Clints(Jed) instead of Dukes(Ethan), that found, the girl, he would have probably shot her!
When Duke saw, Dirty Harry, he knew he had made a mistake!"How did I ever let that one slip through my fingers?" he lamented to Mary!

    Good one itdo,

I agree, some of the Bloopers, were put in intenionally by the companies,
especially at the end of EL DORADO, when Duke and Mitch, are walking down the street, with the crutches, under the wrong arms, limping on the wrong legs!
    They even joke about it!
However, I can't seriously believe, they put awful models and special affects in on purpose! Some of the bloopers, are also, a case of poor editing, so much so, these days, if a film, gets a lot of stick, for one, they eradicate it on the master, for when it's re-issued.
That site, you related to me," movie mistakes",mentions the Indiana Jones film, that was pulled, to be re-mastered, when the Cobra, ,was obviously, behind a saftey glass!

How about just a couple more Production Bloopers!!

TYCOON- Bad Film, even worse special effects, how Duke turned from a normal bloke, into a crazy man, no one will ever know!
It's probably because he got hit on top of the head with the crane!
The model train and bridge scene was awful, and would have been better left out, the dummy on the centre span(Duke), his arm doesn't move etc.

HELLFIGHTERS- When Duke is in his office, they have a backdrop of the window, and the highway beyond!! It is so dreadful, as a model treadmill, all the cars go past the window at the same speed! A red station waggon goes past the window, 15-17 times!!
Vera Miles, drives out the airport, and reverses, without braking, and changing gear

THE GREEN BERETS- Duke could have done without this, but the Sun really does set, over the wrong ocean!!!

    Hi Hondo,

Thanks so much for replying to my post!
Wish I could get hold of any of those!

Most of the rare ones, I've had do to buy, when I've been on holiday
in the States, or from The John Wayne Film Society, here in England!

Does this site have a reputable store, that we can obtain these
    DVD/VHS FILMS FROM?

When you think about hiding money, and I'm sure we all must do it, some, personal way.!
Big money of course, to some is a temptation!

DONOVANS REEF- towards the end of the film,is a slot machine, that pays off!
The priest puts in a silver dollar, and it pays out 2700 silver dollars! These were borrowed from The Bank of America, and observed by five armed guards!.
This was shot on the Paramount back lot in Hollywood.
Perhaps they didn't trust the Duke? !!!

There seems to be, films that have gone forever, or have they?
Apart from THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY and ISLAND IN THE SKY, two films well covered on this site, where have all the the others gone?

Pre THE BIG TRAIL days, (Refer to my posting, Before THE BIG TRAIL)We can't be sure of all those, but since then, what has happened to;-

    GIRLS DEMAND EXCITEMENT

    CANCEL MY RESERVATION

I can't get these in England, Can you get any of them,DVD/VHS, in the U.S of A.?

If you can, let me know.

    Hi Robbie,

Here's a good one for you!
In SHE WEARS A YELLOW RIBBON, THE narrator says Custer is dead!
As we know he died on June 25th. 1876.
On Dukes calender, which he's constantly marking,
the date is March 6th 1876!!

The one in THE SEARCHERS is also quoted in -Analysis of The Searchers in William Luhr and Peter Lehman , AUTHORSHIP AND NARRATIVE IN THE CINEMA (New York.1977)

THE SEARCHERS- It's hard to find anything in this, the great film!
However here's a rare one, for my friends, who have supported this post, itdo, Ringo, General, Nathan and Harold.
In the opening scene, a Navajo blanket is seen right beside Debbie, in a later shot, it's moved to a hitching post, in front of the house, then later on, it's gone altogether!!

    Hi General, thanks,

I read about that scene, being cut, amongst others, was the scene, when Ward Bond approached Barry Fitzgerald, in his carriage, with Duke, and said he wanted a word with him. The scene that followed, was cut, it was about his gambling debts!
The famous scene the wedding night, in the bedroom, was banned in Ohio, for being, impetuous!.
John Ford was told by, Herbert J.Yates to shorten the film by 9 minutes.Ford, not wanting to cut anything, instaed chopped, the 9 minutes off the end, while he was watching the preview!!! Ford got his way!

    Hi Ringo and itdo,

Many thanks for you replies on this post, it's turning out alot of fun!
I wonder how many more will surface? it's seem just a handful of films
at the moment, but the must be lots out there.
Has anyone, seen any Bloopers, in say The Quiet Man, and all the others?
    Let's get spotting! Ha ha!

    Itdo,
Thanks, that movie mistakes site was brilliant, there's even more in The Alamo, and Big Jake, I've never noticed

Luckily most of the music in Dukes films has been great.
THE SEARCHERS, RED RIVER, THE COMMANCHEROS, THE QUIET MAN RIO LOBO.
    THE SHOOTIST.THE WAR WAGON etc
When you look at the illustrious writers that were employed, it's no wonder!
Most of them, remain, the greatest movie music writers, of all time.
