    On the same day:-

another actor Ted Tetzlaf was born. He appeared in Arizona (the film not the place).

96 years ago the actress Paulette Goddard was born she appeared in Reap the Wild Wind

    From IMDB

Paulette Goddard was a child model who debuted in "The Ziegfeld Follies" at the age of 13. She gained fame with the show as the girl on the crescent moon, and was married to a wealthy man by the time she was 16. After her divorce she went to Hollywood in 1931, where she appeared in small roles in pictures for a number of studios. A stunning natural beauty, Paulette could mesmerize any man she met, a fact she was well aware of. One of her bigger roles in that period was as a blond "Goldwyn Girl" in the Eddie Cantor film The Kid from Spain (1932). In 1932 she met Charles Chaplin, and they soon became an item around town. He cast her in Modern Times (1936), which was a big hit, but her movie career was not going anywhere due to her relationship with Chaplin. They were secretly married in 1936, but the marriage failed and they were separated by 1940. It was her role as Miriam Aarons in The Women (1939), however, that got her a contract with Paramount. Paulette was one of the many actresses tested for the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939), but lost the part to Vivien Leigh, and instead appeared with Bob Hope in The Cat and the Canary (1939), a good film but hardly in the same league as GWTW. The 1940s was Paulette's busiest period. She worked with Chaplin in The Great Dictator (1940), Cecil B. DeMille in Reap the Wild Wind (1942) and Burgess Meredith in The Diary of a Chambermaid (1946). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in So Proudly We Hail! (1943). In the early 1940s she was one of Paramount's top stars. Tat star faded in the late 1940s, however, and she was dropped by Paramount in 1949. After a couple of "B" movies, she left films and went to live in Europe, where she married German novelist Erich Maria Remarque in the late 1950s. She was coaxed back to the screen once more, although it was the small screen, for the 1972 television movie The Snoop Sisters (1972) (TV).

    Mini biography
Pauline Marion Goddard Levy was born in Whitestone Landing, New York on June 3, 1910. She was a beautiful child who began to model for local department stores before she made her debut with Florenz Ziegfeld's Follies at the age of 13. For three years she astounded audiences with her talent. She married Edgar James when she was 15 but the union was doomed to failure and was dissolved in 1930. By then Paulette had begun to make her mark on Hollywood with a small bit appearance in the film BERTH MARKS in 1929. Her age of 15 didn't help her in getting better parts. She would continue in bit roles in films such as THE GIRL HABIT (1931), THE MOUTHPIECE, and YOUNG IRONSIDES both in 1932. For the next four years she searched for parts but came up empty handed. It wasn't until 1936 that Paulette would, again, appear in a motion picture in MODERN TIMES. Once again she found herself with a bit part. Finally, after ten years, she gained a decent part in 1939's THE WOMEN. Paulette thought that maybe her career was finally taking off. Her next film she played Joyce Norman in THE CAT AND THE CANARY which was intended to be a send off vehicle for Bob Hope. It did not only that but established Paulette as a genuine star. Her performance won her a ten year contract with Paramount Studios which was one of the premier studios of the day. Her next feature film was with the great Fred Astaire in the acclaimed musical SECOND CHORUS in 1940. Later that year she once again teamed up with Bob Hope with the film THE GHOST BREAKERS. And once again the movie was a huge hit. This was just the beginning because the 1940's was the decade that kept her busy and in the public eye of America's movie going public. Motion pictures such as THE GREAT DICTATOR in 1940 with future husband Charlie Chaplin, POT O' GOLD (1941), and THE LADY HAS PLANS (1942) were added to her already sparkling resume. In 1943, Paulette was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the film SO PROUDLY WE HAIL! She didn't win but it solidified her as a top draw. Although the 1944 film, STANDING ROOM ONLY, didn't bring in the crowds at the box-office, the production is still remembered as a delightful comedy with Fred McMurray, a must see for any film buff. Paulette reached the pinnacle of her career in Mitchell Liesen's KITTY in 1945. The film was a hit with moviegoers as Paulette played an ordinary English woman transformed into a duchess. The film was filled with plenty of comedy, dramatic and romantic scenes that appealed to virtually everyone. As Abby Hale in 1947's UNCONQUERED, Paulette, once more, found herself with a profit making flick. This Cecil B. DeMille film paired her with Gary Cooper in the 18th century romatic drama. The critics weren't to keen on it but the public could have cared less. They loved this long running(146 minutes) movie. The 1950's were not to good on Paulette's career as she appeared in only six feature films, the last being CHARGE OF THE LANCERS in 1954. She would not be seen again on the silver screen until 1964 in TIME OF INDIFFERENCE. Her career was just about finished although she did appear in a made for TV film called THE SNOOP SISTERS as Norma Treet. That one was forgettable. Paulette retired from the film world for good. On April 23, 1990 she died of massive heart failure in Ronco, Switzerland at the age of 78.

    On this day 4th June

111 years ago the actor Russell Hicks (insert) was born he was in A Man Betrayed, Flame of the Barbary Coast and Seven Sinners

107 years ago the actor Lane Chandler was born he appeared in 345 pictures including In Old Oklahoma, Red River and Reap the Wild Wind

this is what IMDB has to say about his career:-

    Quote

American actor who had a brief flirtation with stardom before settling into character roles and bit parts. Born in rural South Dakota (according to government records, though some sources say Walsh County, North Dakota) as Robert C. Oakes, the son of a horse rancher, he moved with his family to Culbertson, Montana (not his birthplace as some sources have it), where he grew up. The family moved again and he graduated from high school in Helena. A brief attendance at Montana Wesleyan College was interrupted by the offer of a job driving a tour bus in Yellowstone National Park.

Drifting down to Los Angeles in the early 1920s, he got work as an auto mechanic, but his ranch-honed cowboy skills got him bit parts in pictures at Paramount when director John Waters offered him work in a series of Westerns. Paramount recognized possibilities in the tall, rugged, handsome cowboy and put him (with a new name, Lane Chandler) into leading roles, first in Westerns, then in contemporary films opposite some of the biggest star actresses of the time, Clara Bow, Greta Garbo, Betty Bronson, and Esther Ralston. As silent films were phased out, Chandler found his stock slipping at Paramount. He began appearing in lower-budgeted Westerns, first in leads, then as second leads to stars such as John Wayne and Jack Hoxie.

A favorite of director Cecil B. DeMille, Chandler worked in many DeMille films, often in tiny bit parts, though he claimed these were his favorite parts. Eventually Chandler no longer commanded roles of any substance and he spent the remaining 35 years of his career in small supporting parts, playing in hundreds of films, often uncredited. A stalwart of television Westerns of the 1950s, he was a familiar face to movie fans for nearly fifty years. An astute businessman with industrial and property holdings, he died in Los Angeles in 1971 at 72.

70 years ago the actor Bruce Dern (2nd insert) was born. In the two pictures he was in with John Wayne he was killed in the War Wagon in a gunfight with Wayne and Kirk Douglas, but in the Cowboys he was responsible as Long Hair for shooting Wayne in the back.

55 years ago Tony curtis (who never appeared with John Wayne on screen) married Janet Lee=igh (who did) Incidentally Janet Leigh's maiden name was Morrison.

40 years ago Lucien Littlefield died aged 64 he featured in Born to the West.

44 years ago Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams died aged 63 among many films he was in The Alamo and The Comancheros.
The son of a rancher-turned-politician, Guinn Williams was given the nickname "Big Boy" (and he was, too - 6' 2" of mostly solid muscle from years of working on ranches and playing semi-pro and pro baseball) by Will Rogers, with whom he made one of his first films, in 1919. Although his father wanted him to attend West Point (he had been an officer in the Army during World War I), Williams had always wanted to act and made his way to Hollywood in 1919. His experience as a cowboy and rodeo rider got him work as a stuntman, and he gradually worked his way up to acting. He became friends with Rogers and together they made around 15 films together. Williams starred in his own series of silent westerns and easily made the transition from silents to talkies. Although he also starred in a series of low-budget westerns in the early and mid-1930s, he really came into his own as a supporting player in the late 1930s and early 1940s, especially at Warner Bros., where he made such resoundingly successful westerns as Dodge City (1939) and Santa Fe Trail (1940) with his friends Errol Flynn and Alan Hale. Williams specialized in the somewhat dim and quick-tempered but basically decent sidekick, a role he would play for the next 20 years or so. He also made films other than westerns, and was in, for example, A Star Is Born (1937) and played strongly against type as a vicious, sadistic killer in The Glass Key (1935). In the early 1960s Williams' health began to deteriorate, which was noticeable in his last film, The Comancheros (1961), in which he had a small part and, sadly, did not look well at all. He died of uremic poisoning shortly afterwards.

As the year goes on and I began to research this subect more thouroughly I put more people on last years list so I am now picking up the remnants that I missed originally. The format of 'On this day' will probably be limited in future to one or two people at most until it reaches the time when I have included almost everyone and it will cease.
