  • Duel in the Sun.
Epic in every aspect of the word, OTT 'acting' by Jennifer Jones, but such a majestic sweep you can kind of look past that. Joseph Cotten on form as usual and Gregory Peck was solid. Great for a Sunday afternoon.

  • Hi there Dooley,

Never heard of that movie. But, with what you have written about it, I have put it on my list. Thanks for telling us something about it!

Jeez! It was the film Selznick made after Gone with the Wind!
    Totally over-the-top but very enjoyable.

  • Not sure if I should post this in this thread or the other one but I finally watched The Alamo yesterday. Was a fantastic epic, the thing that stood out for me was the great quality of acting and touching scenes, at points was abit of a tear jerker even. Think this was arguably Duke's finest acting performance up there with Rio Bravo and The Searchers, he really kicked it up a notch in this one.

  • Thought I'd carry on my 'Sun' related Westerns and watched...

The Last Sunset starring Kirk Douglas, Rock Hudson and Dorothy Malone.

Ordered the Blu Ray from Germany and the picture quality is unbelievable, you can see ever pore on the actors faces in close up, fantastic transfer!

Very good Western indeed, with a mature story based around relationships and not just bad guys and good guys. Def worth a watch if you've never seen it.

  • Had an itch to watch "The Long Riders", so I scratched it. This is the one with four groups of brothers playing the James, Younger, Miller and Ford brothers. The gimmick works just fine and dandy.

The set pieces are top shelf, with the knife fight between Cole Younger and Sam Starr a real highlight.

The Ry Cooder score is beyond criticism and David Carradine easily steals each scene he's in.

The only flaw seems to be in the abrupt editing which suggests that a lot of connecting scenes were either written and not filmed or filmed and scrapped.

Anyway, it is still one highly rewarding viewing experience.

    We deal in lead, friend.

  • Watched Tombstone with Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer, was a fine a modern Western as iv'e seen and even had an apperance from Dobe Carey in there! Was a great story well paced and had both touching scenes and scenes of great action. Had a little bit of something for everyone in there.

I wholeheartedly agree. I was fortunate enough to see this at the cinema on release quite by chance and was blown away. Far, far better than I was expecting and one of the great modern westerns.

My favourite non-Duke western of all time,
can watch it over and over again.
    Kurt Russell was brilliant
but completely outplayed by the excellent Val Kilmer.

Thanks Irish Duke and Ethan. Will go on my list, although it will be the FIRST modern western to do so.

My Last was El Dorado again. Love the story, the actors and seeing my friend Tony as the specialist doctor. Wish most of his work wasn't overseas.

  • Glad to see we all enjoy Tombstone! Watched Two Rode Together tonight with James Stewart and Richard Wildmark, they worked well together and the story was equal parts serious and comedy, I enjoyed Stewart playing a cold cynical character who only seemed to be in it for the money, was a difference from his usual efforts and it's always interesting to see actors outside their comfort zone.

  • Ummm...does Lonely Are the Brave count? I used to watch it on television as a child and I didn't understand the metaphor of the old being destroyed by new technology. Whiskey Girl being hit by the truck always made me cry, though.

Now I get it. It's very sad.

    We're burning moonlight.
