My jaw dropped when I read that The Duke didn't like working with Kim Darby, and that others feel she was bad in the role. I thought she was great! I'm also surprised no one has commented on the remake of True Grit in this thread. Maybe you have elsewhere on the forum?
This is one of my favorite Duke westerns, it's damn near perfect. Great acting, directing, music, locations. One for the ages!

I always thought Wayne only gained charm and character to his roles as he got older. Perhaps my opinion has allot to do with how I was introduced to him through this film, and what was current at that time, but I just love the old, wise, yet very spirited John Wayne characters that are as much about self preservation as they are about their heritage.
