The weather here in the heart of Dixie has been wonderful. Highs in the upper 70's - low 80s but also the humidity has been low like at 45% to 50% which makes the air temperature feel really nice at night. Lows the last three or four nights have been down into the mid to low '50s flirting with the upper 40s. We're getting a preview of fall but I'm not getting used to it, we got a lot of hot days left.
It was cool enough the other night to fire up the old chimnia.

John Wayne's penultimate performance in THE SHOOTIST wasn't easy! Co-screenwriter Miles Swarthout (1946-2016) remembers the multiple problems during the filming of THE SHOOTIST (1976) and shared them with a roomful of western fans at The Autry Museum Cafe, May 21, 2014. As dying gunfighter J.B. Books, Wayne gave one of his greatest performances, adding to his already overflowing legacy of unforgettable characters. There were many difficulties both before and during the filming of THE SHOOTIST. It was Duke's last film and a difficult project. Miles had adapted his father's award winning novel and shared exclusive behind-the-scenes memories of what really happened.

Bruce Dern knew he would be hated by John Wayne fans if he accepted a "killer" part in "The Cowboys" (1972). He took it anyway! As "Longhair," the grinning, evil rustle who eventually murders Wayne's character, Dern was unforgettable! The scene took place at night. While his crew of young drovers watch, Wayne beats Dern solidly in hand-to-hand combat. Then, Dern shoots him in the back. To find out what the filming the final confrontation between Duke and Dern was like, I invited one of the film's young cowboy witnesses, Robert Carradine, to join me and share his memories. Only 17 years old, Robert, at the time living with his actor brother, David, was making his feature film debut as the oldest of the young cowboys in the now revered western. It was an auspicious debut for a career that has included starring in the hit movie franchise, "Revenge of the Nerds" (1984), co-starring with his brothers David and Keith in Tom Selleck's remake of "Monte Walsh" (2003), portraying Sam McGuire in Disney's long running comedy, "Lizzie McQuire" (2001-2004), and in the 2020 re-boot. Plus, Carradine joined Bruce Dern again in the award-winning feature, "Coming Home" (1978). Find out what more he remembers from "The Cowboys" in this special edition of A WORD ON WESTERNS. Recorded May 21, 2019.

Actor Harry Carey's silent westerns helped launch the career of multi-award winning director John Ford. Carey's son, nicknamed "Dobe" because of the reddish color of his hair, followed his famous father into films launching his career with a starring role in Ford's "Three Godfathers" (1947) with John Wayne. Raised during the Golden Age of Hollywood amongst legends, Dobe married actor/teacher Paul Fix's daughter Marilyn. Paul, of course, was Sheriff Micah on "The Rifleman." Melinda Carey, Dobe and Marilyn's daughter, shared her memories of growing up with cinema legends on A WORD ON WESTERNS.

John Wayne at 115 is still our hero! Celebrate John Wayne’s May 26th birthday with a look back at THE ALAMO in this special edition of A WORD ON WAYNE. Patrick Wayne joins Rob Word to talk about the classic and looks back at the making of THE ALAMO (1960) with portions from producer Brian Huberman's wonderful documentary. Duke's dream project THE ALAMO was an all-star epic that featured an exciting recreation of the attack on the Texas stronghold.
Duke had only planned to direct the movie but, due to the rising costs, he took the role of Davy Crockett. Others in the cast included Richard Widmark, Laurence Harvey, Richard Boone, Patrick Wayne, Linda Cristal, Chill Wills, Ken Curtis, Hank Worden, Frankie Avalon and Olive Carey. The magnificent score was done by Dimitri Tiomkin. It was filmed in Brackettville, Texas, with a newly built replica of The Alamo made expressly for the film. -
John Wayne passed away on June 11, 1979, at the age of 72. The cinema legend had a long history of battling cancer. Duke's death, along with the demise of over 40 others, has been attributed to their work on billionaire Howard Hughes’ 1956 RKO epic, THE CONQUEROR.
The filming of the movie took place in the rugged hills and desert areas surrounding St. George, Utah. It seemed like the perfect setting for the period piece: exotic, imposing, and desolate. However, the area had been the site of nearly 20 atomic blasts and recent nuclear tests. It was a time during the Cold War, paranoia, and fear of communism in the early 1950s. The Utah locations were contaminated by nuclear fallout, but the production team was reassured by the Atomic Energy Commission that it was safe to film there. Radioactivity was not deemed a problem, and thus filming commenced. In hindsight, this proved to be a deadly decision.
Wayne was arguably miscast as the Mongol leader, Genghis Khan. Future Oscar winner Susan Hayward, who played Khan’s love interest, and Pedro Armendariz were also top-billed alongside the Duke. Unfortunately for many involved in the 1956 project, THE CONQUEROR was to be branded as “An RKO Radioactive Picture.”
Of the stars and personnel who worked on THE CONQUEROR, nearly 100 developed some form of cancer. Forty-six died, including John Wayne, as well as cast members Hayward, Armendariz, Moorhead, John Hoyt, and director Dick Powell. This death toll does not account for potentially dozens more Navajos who were enlisted as extras to portray the horseback-riding Mongol hordes, all of whom died from cancer.
Duke’s son, Patrick Wayne, visited the set on location and recalls seeing Geiger counters and hearing the noise created by the proximity of the radioactive sands. Patrick joined A WORD ON WESTERNS host, Rob Word, to share his experiences and discuss how, years later, the John Wayne Cancer Foundation was established to raise awareness, fund research, and honor his father. Patrick also regales the AWOW audience with stories of bunking with, and pranking, his Dad, and how Duke's special Pontiac station wagon was created by designer George Barris, which is now on display in Fort Worth at The John Wayne Experience.
John Wayne’s death on June 11th at the age of 72 remains a subject of controversy. Was it really due to nuclear fallout contracted during the making of THE CONQUEROR? Some argue it was his lifelong smoking habit. I guess we may never know.
