    JOHN WAYNE: AMERICAN
Randy Roberts & James Olson. (1997)

'All students of Hollywood will find [this biography of John Wayne] fascinating and rewarding' - "London Times Literary Supplement". 'Writing in a plain-spoken style that avoids both fanzine and academic cant, the authors nicely retell the story of Wayne's relationship with John Ford, the director most responsible for setting him apart from the gunslinging crowd' - "New York Times Book Review". 'Recommended for all film collections' - "Library Journal".'John Wayne remains a constant in American popular culture. Middle America grew up with him in the late 1920s and 1930s, went to war with him in the 1940s, matured with him in the 1950s, and kept the faith with him in the 1960s and 1970s...In his person and in the persona he so carefully constructed, middle America saw itself, its past, and its future. John Wayne was his country's alter ego'. Thus begins "John Wayne: American", a biography bursting with vitality and revealing the changing scene in Hollywood and America from the Great Depression through the Vietnam War.During a long movie career, John Wayne defined the role of the cowboy and soldier, the gruff man of decency, the hero who prevailed when the chips were down. But who was he, really? Here is the first substantive, serious view of a contradictory private and public figure. Randy Roberts, a professor of history at Purdue University, is the author of "Papa Jack: Jack Johnson" and the "Era of White Hopes". James S. Olson, a professor of history at Sam Houston State University, is the author of "The Ethnic Dimension in American History".
Hefty biography that covers a lot of ground
Personally, I think this is the best around
and takes some beating for facts and information. ethanedwards

DUKE: The Life and Image of John Wayne
    Ronald L. Davis. (2001)

Almost two decades after his death, John Wayne is still America’s favorite movie star. More than an actor, Wayne is a cultural icon whose stature seems to grow with the passage of time. In this illuminating biography, Ronald L. Davis focuses on Wayne’s human side, portraying a complex personality defined by frailty and insecurity as well as by courage and strength.

Davis traces Wayne’s story from its beginnings in Winterset, Iowa, to his death in 1979. This is not a story of instant fame: only after a decade in budget westerns did Wayne receive serious consideration, for his performance in John Ford’s 1939 film Stagecoach. From that point on, his skills and popularity grew as he appeared in such classics as Fort Apache, Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searches, The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, and True Grit. A man’s ideal more than a woman’s, Wayne earned his popularity without becoming either a great actor or a sex symbol. In all his films, whatever the character, John Wayne portrayed John Wayne, a persona he created for himself: the tough, gritty loner whose mission was to uphold the frontier’s--and the nation’s--traditional values.

To depict the different facets of Wayne’s life and career, Davis draws on a range of primary and secondary sources, most notably exclusive interviews with the people who knew Wayne well, including the actor’s costar Maureen O’Hara and his widow, Pilar Wayne. The result is a well-balanced, highly engaging portrait of a man whose private identity was eventually overshadowed by his screen persona--until he came to represent America itself.

In this virile-red-white and blue biography, of an ostentatiously virile man,
Davis Wayne built and maintained the image that soon grew,
to overshadow his private identity- and came to represent America itself
Yet he intentionally presents, a sustained life story,
not a detailed fim analysis that would undermines the thread of the narrative
The 377 pages are informative and highly readable.with 27 illustrations.
Harry Cary Jr. wrote, This book is the most complete work on Duke
that I have ever read. Davis captures Duke's image.
both on screen and off. It's a real page turner
    Director Burt Kennedy comments,
I have read every book about Wayne. This is the best!
In short, one for the serious fans

THE COMPLETE FILMS OF JOHN WAYNE
    Zmiewsky and Ricci. (1970)

First edition done in 1970, when the True Grit Oscar brought a new interest to JW’s career, next edition (as “The COMPLETE Films of…”) came after his death. Probably the first time somebody took the time to count the films and assemble stills to each and every one of them. Still considered to be the definite list – although in the meantime many silent films in which JW participated, sometimes as a crowd extra – aren’t mentioned here.
If you are looking for John Wayne films this is the book to have. It tells what the film is about, who also starred in and what year it was made. It also has plenty of photos to help you recognize what movie it is and if it is the one you are looking for. The book has some interesting facts about some of the movies.

    THE JOHN WAYNE SCRAPBOOK
    Lee Pfeiffer. (1989)

Since its initial publication in 1989, The John Wayne Scrapbook has been one of the most in-demand volumes for fans of the Duke. A unique perspective on Wayne's career, featuring chapters devoted to "John Wayne's Best Films," "John Wayne's Turkeys," "Wayne on TV," "Duke's Box-Office Rankings," "The Story Behind The Alamo," "John Wayne Bloopers," and much more. This newly revised and updated edition features hundreds of rare production photos, international lobby cards, film posters, and unique Wayne collectibles - many presented in full color. Here is the ultimate celebration of one of America's favorite actors.

Lee Pfieiffer also a fan, lists the films he considers the best, as well as the JW “turkeys”. Good info on the side about memorabilia.
The introduction to this invaluable book sates:_
My goal is simple; to honour a man who's films I have enjoyed,
most of my life. This book is designed to be fun,
you can open any page and be entertained
For anyone who collects 'Wayne' memorabilia, the sections,
on posters, comics and other collectables are a treasure,
together with the section on videos.
Very well illustrated throughout and compiled caringly
    by an obvious Wayne buff

JOHN WAYNE: My Life with the Duke
    Pilar Wayne/ Alex Thorleifson. (1987)

This biography of legendary Hollywood film actor John Wayne has been written by his wife of 25 years. It describes his acting career, his three marriages, his relationships with his children, his political views and his friendships with such stars as Bogart and Bacall, Henry Fonda and John Ford.

The memories of JW’s widow. Lots of insights of course in the private man John Wayne. Always interesting that the people that are the closest to stars and write books often mix up the facts about the films. Probably we notice because the fans are the real scholars – and to his next of kin he’s not a movie star on which you can have a trivia contest but, well – their next of kin. Interesting for example that Pilar writes about the infamous incident when Robert Mitchum behaved so badly – they say he threw somebody in the sea – he had to leave the picture Blood Alley and Wayne had to put in to save Batjac’s interests. So many years later she seems to be still angry at Mitchum (Wayne had to cut short his honeymoon to do Mitchum’s part) when it was long since cleared that Mitchum wasn’t to blame at all.

    JOHN WAYNE: My Father
    Aissa Wayne/ Steve Delsohn (1998)

In John Wayne: My Father, Aissa Wayne delves into her father's childhood, his film career, and his life off the screen. The result is an affecting portrait that offers a new perspective on one of America's most enduring hero's humanity.

Aissa Wayne's poignant memoir. The daughter of John Wayne and his third wife, Pilar, Aissa delves into her father's childhood, his film career, and his life off the screen. "John Wayne: My Father" reports Wayne's life faithfully and compassionately, resulting in an affecting portrait that offers a new perspective on one of America's most enduring heroes. 16-pp. photo insert,
    with some rare family photographs

    DUKE: A Love Story
    Pat Stacy/ Beverly Linet (1985)

DUKE: A LOVE STORY is a stunning, deeply moving book: the warm, funny, tender, and finally, tragic story of the last years of one of America's most beloved men -- by the woman he loved.
John Wayne and Pat Stacy were together for seven years. For all those years she was his secretary and companion; for the last five the woman he loved, openly and with pride, and who loved him back. They shared everything together, alone and with his family and friends, and the Wayne she gives us is very different from the Wayne of legend.
This is "Duke" the man, tender, loving, stubborn, generous, cantankerous, impulsive, humorous, and, finally, full of rage at the cancer he had to battle for the second time in his life; the cancer that, as Stacy cared for him day after day and shared his agony, cut away at the man who had been so vital and strong -- but to which he refused to succumb.
DUKE: A LOVE STORY is a revelation, a book full of joy and sorrow and courage -- the real John Wayne brought to vivid, loving life.

ON BOARD WITH THE DUKE:John Wayne and the Wild Goose
    Bert Minshall/ Clark Sharon. (1992)

Millions of Americans know him on horse-back, on foot, and on film--an American idol whose movies merit a special section at video stores across the country even now and reappear regularly on movie channels. But for Wayne, much of his real life, for 15 years, was spent on board the Wild Goose, 136-foot converted World War II mine-sweeper and sister ship to Jacques Cousteau's Calypso. It was where he relaxed and entertained, where he most enjoyed his roles as husband and father and friend. Bert Minshall, captain on the Wild Goose, became more than that--he became confidant, chronicler, and crutch to Wayne, as well as companion to Wayne's children. In hundreds of still pictures, in home movies taken with his 8mm camera, and a diary, Minshall recorded day-to-day life aboard the yacht--interludes with famous guests, as well as routine family activities. Much of that material is included in On Board with the Duke, providing an intimate and revealing glimpse of Wayne and the people around him.

The skipper of the Wild Goose and other mates decided – years after Wayne’s passing – to publish the pictures they took back then and write the story of Wayne’s yacht. While the pictures are certainly very private – and you’ll look at them with the guilty pleasure that the Wayne family probably didn’t expect to find them in a book – the text is somewhat not up to the importance of the pictures. You’ll find out that one of the mates made Duke a drink of protein and Wayne found it gave him energy – those are bits of information you’ll soak up of course – but then they’re not that important – are they? The book’s a companion piece with the VHS documentary with the same title, and home movies made by the same mates (and again, the same guilty pleasure you might experience watching private things like that)

JOHN WAYNE: The Life and Legend
Scott Eyman (April 2014) Simon & Schuster

Another biography of John Wayne is on the way. The author is Scott Eyman, who wrote Print the Legend:
The Life and Times of John Ford and many other movie-related books.

Drawing on interviews that author Scott Eyman conducted with John Wayne before his death and more than 100 interviews with the actor’s family, co-stars, and close associates, this revelatory biography shows how both the facts and fictions about Wayne illuminate his singular life.

John Wayne died more than thirty years ago, but he remains one of the five favorite movie stars of contemporary audiences. Yet, there has never been a comprehensive biography worthy of the man as well as the star. Until now.

The beloved Hollywood icon comes fully to life in this complex portrait by a master biographer whose skillful prose has been hailed as “outstanding” and “compulsive reading” by reviewers from The New York Times to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Washington Post Book World called Scott Eyman “one of the most distinguished and reliable of popular film historians.” In Eyman’s hands, this enduring symbol of American grit gets the biography he deserves.
Exploring Wayne’s early life with a difficult mother and a feckless father, Eyman makes startling connections to his later days as an anti-Communist conservative, his stormy marriages to Latina women, and his notorious—and surprisingly long-lived—extra-marital affair with Marlene Dietrich.

In addition to his interviews with those who knew Wayne best—many of whom had never spoken on the record before—Eyman draws on the actor’s own business records to weave a rich tapestry of American cultural history: the story of a man who went from college football to romantic lead on the silver screen, and who ultimately became the dominant—and often domineering—symbol of his country at mid-century, the quintessential American male against which all other screen heroes are compared.

Through it all, the author provides a nuanced and sympathetic portrait that is as charming, compelling, and complicated as the Duke himself.

    COMPANY OF HEROES-
My Life As An actor In The John Ford Stock Company

    Harry Carey.Jr, (1994)

In my opinion, not only the best book about Ford, it’s also one of the best about Wayne as well.
The long-time member of Ford’s Stock company tells it all. And it’s so much fun.

    Product Description
When Harry Carey, Sr. died in 1947, director John Ford cast
Carey's 26-year-old son, Harry, Jr. in the role of The Abilene Kid in 3 Godfathers.
Ford and the elder Carey had filmed an earlier version of the story,
and Ford dedicated the Technicolor remake to his memory. "Company of Heroes"
is the story of the making of that film, as well as the eight subsequent Ford classics.
In it, Harry Carey, Jr. casts a remarkably observant eye on the process
of filming Westerns by one of the true masters of the form.
From She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and "Wagonmaster"
to The Searchers and "Cheyenne Autumn",
he shows the care, tedium, challenge, and exhilaration
of movie-making at its highest level.
Carey's portrayal of John Ford at work is the most intimate ever written
He also gives us insightful and original portraits of the men and women
who were part of Ford's vision of America:
John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Maureen O'Hara,
Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen, and Ben Johnson.
Funny, insightful, and brutally honest, "
    Company of Heroes
is a rip-roaring good read that presents the remarkable life story of
Harry Carey, Jr. and his many continuing fine performances.

JOHN WAYNE: Cast a Giant Shadow
    Carolyn McGivern. (2001)

Notable perhaps because it’s probably the first book about JW written by a woman. Only a few pictures. Short foreword by Steven Spielberg (who wanted JW to play the General in “1941”, a part eventually played by Robert Stack)
"Eating and drinking to his fans, it is articulately written, exhaustively researched and jam-packed with quotes..." -- Modern Woman: Ireland, March 2002. "The biography of a giant of a man who also cast a long shadow over the film industry..." -- Brave New World Website, October 2002.
"My name is Marion Morrison…I’m happy people call me "Duke"…if you were my size, wore cowboy boots and a big hat, out rode, outfought and out shot all the bad men in the West… how would you like to climb down off a horse, throw your saddle over the corral rail and then walk off-camera to a chair labeled, Marion"? This updated and revised third edition of John Wayne, A Giant Shadow, provides a unusual look at Hollywood’s most enduring icon and is full of surprising details. If you thought you knew John Wayne… think again.

"My real name is Marion Morrison...I'm happy people call me 'Duke'...If you were my size, wore cowboy boots and a big hat, outrode, outfought and outshot all the bad men in the west...how would you like to climb down off a horse, throw your saddle over the corral rail and then walk off-camera to sit down in a chair labelled Marion?" "I don't work for the producers...I don't work for the studio...I don't work for the critics...I work for the audience...I try always to give the best of myself so that people aren't disappointed in me." "When the doctor taps you on the shoulder and says, 'You've got cancer, the sun sure doesn't shine any brighter. Yeah! I was scared. I was tough to get along with. I'd discovered I was fallible." This is a flesh and blood study of John Wayne, unashamedly aimed at the audience, the way he liked to do business. McGivern allows Wayne to tell his own story, mostly in his own words. It is the story of a man who chose to leave normality behind to create his own legend. Of all the complexities and composites that made up John Wayne, the image perhaps shines the brightest, but whilst his face is still seen on the TV screens around the world people will remember a man of true courage and honesty.

traces the life of the famous actor from his beginning in Winterset, Iowa, his Hollywood film career, his role as a cattle-breeder and rancher, and his political beliefs, to his death in 1979.

DUKE: The Life and Times of John Wayne

THE DUKE: A Life in Pictures
    Rob L. Wagner. (2001)

Veteran journalist Rob L. Wagner gathers together over 120 often unusual and rarely-seen photos of John Wayne to capture the highlights of his extraordinary life and career in images accompanied by detailed captions. A must-have for all Duke fans!

Large-scale picture book, don’t bother to read the inaccurate text.
If you are a fan of John Wayne and his movies, then this book will interest you. However, if you are interested in some depth about his life, you will have to look elsewhere. There is little more than photos in this book, they are stills from movies, shots during production and a few feature him at award shows or in a casual scene.
All of the pictures capture Wayne's photogenic toughness, even a casual scene seems to exude the strong confidence that was a hallmark of Wayne in his movies.
While containing many good pictures, the book misses some of the Dukes movies (like "The Cowboys") and contains several inaccuracies (such as trying to pass off the plot to "True Grit" as the plot to "Big Jake" and mislabeling "Rio Bravo" as "El Dorado").

JOHN WAYNE’S AMERICA: The Politics of Celebrity
    Garry Wills. (1997)

The best-selling author of Lincoln at Gettysburg explores the life and times of John Wayne and his legend, explaining how the man, Marion Morrison, became a myth and how that myth shaped Americans' political attitudes and ideas.

Maybe the book JW-fans love to burn. True, Wills set out to look behind the image. And he did some research solid as a rock. Sometimes we would love to print the legend. But then you always get the feeling he did it in the first place to hurt the icon, not just to bring out the truth.
This book poses an interesting question: How is it that John Wayne came to embody a certain politics for America? In giving his answer, Wills flashes his usual encyclopedic knowledge of intellectual and cultural materials. He knows his Aristotle and his Groucho and knows when to use them. The knee-jerk analysis of Wayne's status is that he was a blustery flag-waver. Wills's answer is more subtle: that Wayne "stood for an America that was disappearing or had disappeared." And according to Wills, Wayne did this in different ways at different stages of his career. In his early successes (such as Stagecoach), he represented naive virtue; later he would portray the dark acceptance of responsibility (Sands of Iwo Jima). And finally, he moved on to model a conscious acceptance of the anachronism of all such individual honor (The Shootist).

DUKE: We're Glad we Knew You
John Wayne's Friends and Colleagues Remember His Remarkable Life
    Herb Fagen. (1999)

A collection of direct interviews with his co-workers. Actually, the concept looks very familiar to the books Tim Lilley did years before this one, but always in limited number and available just to the fans:
"Duke We're Glad We Knew You" is an excellent book. People such as Harry Carey Jr., Ben Johnson, Lee Aaker, John Wayne's stepsister, and many more write of when they knew Duke. The forward is written by Ronald Regan who knew Wayne personally. Author, Herb Fagen. interviewed many of them personally. The book has stories about how Wayne first got started in acting, his childhood, his marriages, his movies, and his death. I have really enjoyed this book.

SHOOTING STAR: A Biography of John Wayne
    Maurice Zolotow. (1970)

Published in 1970, Zolotow was the first biographer to sit down and talk at length with JW – an advantage pretty much no biographer had afterwards

JOHN WAYNE'S AMERICA, WHY I LOVE HER
John Wayne (Author), Billy Liebert (Collaborator), John Mitchum (Collaborator) (1977)

Perhaps no person in recent times has been more closely identified with the basic values of the American way of life than has John Wayne. Both personally and professionally, he has consistently reflected the solid, essential character of this country. The book is filled with monologues, music and patriotic quotations to examine and explain a love for country and people.

    THE QUOTABLE JOHN WAYNE:
The Grit and Wisdom of an American Icon

    Carol Lea Mueller. (2007)

Perhaps best known for his classic movie lines, such as Fill your hands, you sons-a-bitches from True Grit, the late actor John Wayne often displayed a spontaneous and biting wit away from the screen as well. This gem of inspiration contains Wayne anecdotes on God and country, the old West, friends and family, acting, and quotes from others about John Wayne the actor, and John Wayne the man.

JOHN WAYNE: True Grit - American
    Wilma Russell.(2010)

Wilma Russell compiles yet another fascinating book on John Wayne, with Waynes Pledge of Allegiance from America, Why I Love Her as its unifying theme.

From a time when independence, courage, and conviction were our national identity, the words, quotes, and quips of John Wayne, so poignantly highlighted in this beautifully, fully illustrated gift book, True Grit, revives and restores the personal and patriotic pride we thought we were losing. It stirs within our hearts the true grit and invincible force we need to reclaim our tomorrows and the dreams we'd forgotten we had. True Grit, based on John Wayne's Pledge of Allegiance and the perspective, heart-stirring ideals he developed as his love of America grew deeper. This inspiringly presented gift book rekindles an almost forgotten gene that lies within every American-the gene of unyielding courage we need now in this country's history, possibly more than ever before.

    JOHN WAYNE: A Tribute
    Norm. Goldstein. (1979)

John Wayne, a towering giant of a man, was one of those rare individuals who became a legend in his own time---a symbol of American decency, vitality, and determination; liked and admired even by those who did not always agree with him. Here is a pictorial tribute to the Duke, tracing his personal and professional life from assistant prop man to No. 1 box office star.
Just what the title says – a Tribute. Nice Book about career and private life with Foreword by Jimmy Stewart.

WHEN THE LEGEND BECAME THE FACT:
The True Life of John Wayne

    Richard Douglas Jensen. (2012)

When The Legend Became Fact - The True Life of John Wayne by Richard Douglas Jensen is the most comprehensive deconstruction of the mythology surrounding the life of Americas favorite actor to date. With decades of research and insight, Jensen lifts the veil of public relations half-truths and exposes the reality of the man who is still, 30 years after his death, the iconic Western movie hero and hero of red state America. Jensen proves that the public John Wayne was very different from the private man, who struggled with severe alcoholism, chronic infidelity, self-esteem and personal demons that often made life hell for his wives and children. The book painstakingly recounts the triumphs and tragedies of the life of John Wayne – who rose from abject poverty to become the worlds most famous movie star – and creates a portrait of a man haunted by a childhood of abuse; a man conflicted by his own definition of masculinity; a man fighting to control his own rage and his propensity for violence; a man who committed domestic violence against all three of his wives and his children; and a man haunted by and driven to overcome his fear of failure, poverty and ridicule.

    JOHN WAYNE: A Western Celebration
Jane Pattie (Author), Tim Lilley (Editor) (2007)

John Wayne A Western Celebration, is just that, A Western Celebration! This beautifully produced volume is a stunning, comprehensive visual work showcasing the entire collection of the Westerns and rare and vintage movie posters of John Wayne's career. It is an exclusive, stirring tribute to the unforgettable Duke, a man as large as the American West that he so loved. It celebrates Duke's Centennial year and his many contributions to the colorful tapestry of the West through his 87 Western movies. John Wayne had the unique ability to capture the spirits and show us the faces off the rugged individuals who left their tracks across the wild and unforgiving landscape of the West. It was the cowboy who became the American folk hero. And it was big John Wayne who came to represent the American cowboy and all the great qualities of America around the world. This book is for those who are proud to be American. An imposing feature length Western filmography that salutes and honors a timeless American. Maureen O'Hara best summed it up with her speech to the United States Congress in 1979 when she said: "To the people of the world, John Wayne is the United States of America. He is what they believe it to be, what they hope it will be, and what they hope it always will be." Written by celebrated Texan author, Jane Pattie. Retail: $120, Hardbound, Dustjacket, 224 sterling gloss pages , Full color, Over 300 images, Oversized museum quality, Dimensions 14" x 11," Weighs approx. 6 lbs, Published in 2007. Limited print run. This book is not available in book stores.

JOHN WAYNE: Prophet of the American Way of Life
    Emanuel Levy. (1988)
    (Scarecrow Press)

John Wayne was the most popular and the most durable star in film history. He was also a national legend, a folk hero, and a powerful symbol of the American Dream. Levy evaluates Wayne's film oeuvre by comparing him with other major stars of his generation and demonstrates that of all American actors, he came closest to the notion of 'actor-as-auteur.'

A heavyweight book dealing at length with all of Duke's films by genre.
John Wayne was one of the most popular and most durable stars in film history. But he was more than an actor or a movie star; he was a national legend, a folk hero, and a powerful symbol of the American Dream. This is a critical examination of John Wayne, the person, the actor, the film star, the political figure, and the mythic legend. It describes Wayne's film work in terms of his life, and his life in terms of movies. The text also views the cultural significance of "the phenomenon of John Wayne" by placing him and his movies in the broader contexts of the film industry and American society at large. The book evaluates Wayne's film oevre by comparing with other major stars of the generation, particularly those with similar screen images, such as Gary Cooper, Henry Ford, and James Stewart.

    JOHN WAYNE: Actor, Artist,Hero
    Richard D McGhee. (1990)
    (McFarland Classics )

This biography of John Wayne includes analyses of films that made him a hero, a comprehensive filmography, and a study of his style of work.

Another interesting book going deeper into Duke's persona comparing him at the time with soldiers in the time of the Vietnam conflict.
Another kind of biography: this author tries to look at the Wayne image in terms of fable, tragic heroes, romantic heroes and the sort. Sometimes too analytic. But why not.

    JOHN WAYNE: A Bio-Bibliography
    Judith M.Riggin. (1992)
    (Greenwood Press )

A strange book which lists nearly every book written about Duke up to that time and gives a complete version of the playboy interview
Notable is the index to articles in fan magazines about Wayne, not available elsewhere, and the complete 1971 Playboy interview that made headlines in its day.–Communication Booknotes
she does provide ample information for those who wish to pursue the issue further.–ARBA
John Wayne--the man, actor, and icon--remains synonymous with certain American values. He represents conservative political views, aggressive militarism, and a masculine bravado. In film history, Wayne has a place as one of the great stars, perhaps even as one of the greatest actors. This bio-bibliography traces the life and career of John Wayne, covering all his work in the performing arts. In addition to the biographical chapter and a career chronology, the work contains an exhaustive bibliography, an index of fan magazine articles unavailable elsewhere, and the complete 1971 controversial Playboy magazine interview.

JOHN WAYNE: An American Icon (Biography)
    Biographiq. (2008)

John Wayne - An American Icon is the biography of John Wayne, an iconic Academy Award-winning American film actor. John Wayne epitomized ruggedly individualistic masculinity, and has become an enduring American icon. He is famous for his distinctive voice, walk and enormous physical presence. He was also known for his conservative political views and his support in the 1950s for anti-communist positions. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Wayne thirteenth among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time. His career began in silent movies in the 1920s and he was a major star from the 1940s to the 1970s. He is closely associated with Westerns and war movies, but he also made a wide range of films from various genres - biographies, romantic comedies, police dramas, and more. John Wayne - An American Icon is highly recommended for those interested in reading more about this popular film actor.

JOHN WAYNE: The Man Behind the Myth
    Michael Munn. (2004)
    Robson Books

According to this congenial biography by film journalist Munn, movie legend Wayne (1907–1979) was a hard worker who held tight to his beliefs and what he thought he should show on screen. Wayne's career did have its share of controversy (although he starred in cutthroat war films, Wayne didn't sign up for military service in WWII; he rejected communism, which made him the object of Stalinist threats; and the actor's given name is still debated), and Munn deftly addresses those hullabaloos while providing an overview of the actor's accomplishments. After playing football at USC, Wayne worked as a studio prop man, coming into early contact with director John Ford, who would direct Wayne in some of his most memorable performances, including 1952's The Quiet Man. Throughout their association, Ford treated Wayne erratically, disparaging his talents and lashing out at him for accepting a lead role from rival director Raoul Walsh (The Big Trail, 1930). Yet Ford and Wayne collaborated on 1939's Stagecoach, which gave birth to the serious western and the Ford-Wayne movie subgenre. Other highlights include Wayne's emergence as a heavy in 1948's Red River and his ferocious performance in 1956's The Searchers. Munn portrays the actor in his personal life as a man's man, who sustained friendships with tough cohorts like stuntman Yakima Canutt but failed in romance. Although the book takes an odd turn toward the end, when Munn links Wayne's patriotism and heroic persona to the heroic actions after September 11, overall, it's a fine tribute.

The latest book as far as I know, drawing on the authors conversation with Duke in London whilst making Brannigan and subsequent telephone and personal conversations with many of his co stars. It is this book that reveals the Communist plot to assasinate Duke in the 1950s and 60s. I have just finished it and it is quite a good read.

    DUKE: The John Wayne Album
John Boswell (Author), Jay David (Author), Richard Schickel (Foreword (1979)

Handsome publication, great print, maybe the nicest of the tribute books that came to market in 79, mainly to cash in after JWs death (I mean, why didnt they honor him in 1978?)

    THE JOHN WAYNE CODE
    Michael Turback.(2006)

"Straight from the Duke's mouth, Michael Turback draws out what a real Conservative is all about." --Eric Lichtenfeld, author, "Action Speaks Louder: Violence, Spectacle, and the American Action Movie"

John Waynes words were as powerful as the six-guns he wore on his hips. On and off screen, he spoke in declarative, often blunt sentences to express what he meant. This book presents an articulation of wisdom from an icon of the Old Right, fascinating for its probity and sincerity. The compilation is a challenge to so-called Conservatives and a valuable reference regardless of the readers political ideology.

    JOHN WAYNE'S WILD WEST:
An Illustrated History of Cowboys, Gunfights, Weapons, and Equipment

    Bruce Wexler. (2010)

The first book to reveal what was the real West and what was Hollywood in John Waynes movies. John Wayne is the most iconic cowboy actor of all time. His style brought to life a whole troupe of western characters, from rancher to cowboy to sheriff to scout. During his long career—in which he starred in over 175 films—Waynes work became fundamental to our understanding of the Old West. But how much of what we saw in his movies was real? In John Waynes Wild West, you will learn about the equipment, weapons, clothes, tack, boots, and other paraphernalia featured in Waynes westerns, including his personal favorite gun, the Winchester carbine. John Waynes Wild West is the book for fans of John Wayne movies and for history buffs alike. 100 color and 100 black-and-white illustrations

    THE JOHN WAYNE STORY
    George Carpozi Jr. (1974)

One of the first bios, written when JW was still alive, but by some guy who didnt like him too much, and, as he claimed, he had reason to. Oh hell. Duke just shook him up a little at some time. Do you have to go and write a book about it? Published first in 74, and then in an extended version after his death. Yes – to cash in!

AMERICAN TITAN: Searching for John Wayne
Marc Eliot (Auhor) Paperback – 19 Nov 2015

    americantitan.jpg

From the veteran New York Times bestselling biographer comes a major, in-depth look at one of the most enduring American icons of all time, the Duke, John Wayne.

As he did in his bestselling biographies of Jimmy Stewart and Clint Eastwood, acclaimed Hollywood biographer Marc Eliot digs deep beneath the myth in this revealing look at the most legendary Western film hero of all time; the man with the distinctive voice, walk, and demeanor who was an inspiration to many and a symbol of American masculinity, power, and patriotism.

Eliot pays tribute to the man and the myth, identifying and analyzing the many interesting contradictions that made John Wayne who he was: an Academy Award-winning actor associated with cowboys and soldiers who didnt like horses and never served in a war; a Republican icon who voted for Democrats Roosevelt and Truman; a white man often accused of racism who married three Mexican wives. Here are stories of the movies he made famous as well as numerous friends and legendary colleagues such as John Ford, Maureen OHara, Natalie Wood, and Dean Martin.

A top box-office draw for more than three decades—starring in 142 films from Stagecoach and True Grit, for which he won the Oscar to The Quiet Man and The Green Berets—John Waynes life and career paralleled nearly the entire twentieth century, from the Depression through World War II to the upheavals of the 1960s. Setting his life within the sweeping political and social transformations that defined the nation, Eliots masterful portrait of the man they called Duke is a remarkable in depth look at a life and the American Century itself.

All right. This is a cook-book, using the titles of Wayne-films for receipts. Like Cahills United States Mushrooms. Those are NOT receipts for menus Walter Brennan cooked up at the chuckwagon, they are in no way related to the films. Oh well. At least there are some pictures.

    JOHN WAYNE: a Novel
    Dan Barden.(1997)

Surprise! This is not a John Wayne bio, the story is a fictional
one dealing with the private live of John Wayne,

Ultimately, John Wayne: A Novel is a love story about the American dream and American manhood as they are personified in the iconic figure of the Duke, and like any lover, Dan Barden expresses admiration and longing as well as the pain and disappointment of being let down. For the young Danny, and especially for his parents Lillian and Frank, John Wayne was a very real presence; someone they worked with, drank with, and felt blessed to be around. This story is perfectly placed in the intersection between fact and fiction, the place where the real man meets the legends that grew up around him.

The novel spans John Wayne's life, from his first love at sixteen to his deathbed decision to convert to Catholicism in an effort to "cover all the bases." Throughout, the Bardens are the perfect observers, guileless enough to retain an unabashed admiration for a man they consider a hero, perceptive enough to begin to see him as he really was. Full of wit, intelligence, and sympathy, John Wayne: A Novel is a deeply insightful study of a man who was, himself, a walking fiction.

JOHN WAYNE: El Vaquero que Conquistó Hollywood:
    PARTE I (1907-1955)

    (The Cowboy who Conquered Hollywood)
    Juan Tejero. (2007) (Spain)

Tour of the film career of one of the viewers favorite star, John Wayne.Segunda part from 1956 to 1979.

In John Wayne had something that appealed equally to friends and enemies. He was a huge, powerful and terrible, was a part of Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett another, and a full American essence. It was Ringo Kid, was Sergeant John M. Stryker, Captain Nathan Brittles, Sean Thornton, Ethan Edwards, Hondo Lane, Captain Kirby York and Tom Doniphon. Over the years he lost his good looks defiant youth. He dropped his hair, gained weight, her face filled with wrinkles. But changes surprisingly increased its appeal. Her new face was carved on Mount Rushmore, as if he had been there forever. It became, more than any other person of his age, at the command of the United States. But what heroes are made of? Duke was just an actor. Never fought against the Indians in the Wild West and Mexican outlaws nor peppered decimated the ranks of the enemy Japanese. He lived most of his life in Glendale, Los Angeles, Encino and Newport Beach. Never was military. So why her figure evokes sensations as eternal and powerful? Why medals were minted with his image, schools and airports baptized with his name? Why viewers still find her films every night? To these questions, and many others, the author tries to answer. In this first part, Juan Tejero dissects real life myth, describing a complex personality, as marked by fragility and insecurity as the strength and the courage. It also clarifies some points regarding Ford's contribution to Duke's career, reveals the real reason that prevented him from enlisting in the Army and debunks some of the other myths surrounding life that needs no embellishment. Faithful to alcohol, snuff and above all, his friends, was never a good husband. He left three wives and refused to marry the woman of his life last. His was a world of men, where women had little place and energies were devoted to work and an inner circle of male friends. Then, on the screen, in all his films, in all its characters, Wayne starred as John Wayne, an image he built to suit: the tough, harsh and inappropriate, given to the defense of traditional values border. . . and their country. JOHN WAYNE: El Vaquero que Conquistó Hollywood:
    PARTE II (1956-1979)

    (The Cowboy who Conquered Hollywood)
    Juan Tejero.(2007) (Spain)

Throughout his long film career, John Wayne defined a character: the cowboy and soldier, rough and decent man, the hero victorious to the moment of truth. But who was John Wayne, or Duke, as his friends knew him, really?. This is the serious and documented portrait of a contradictory figure, both public and private.

No legend of cinema has cast a shadow so gigantic. Throughout more than two hundred films, its impressive cinematic image based on patriotism and a clear idea of the separation between good and evil when Wayne came to represent real life, a living icon of American history. But its popularity has baffled critics for decades. Years after his death, viewers still classifying it among the ten major Hollywood star. Unable to refute this popular success, critics have preferred to focus their arguments on the ideas and policies that defended the fact that he enlisted to fight in World War II, despite so many war movies as virile starred. In this illuminating biography, Juan Tejero shows the lights and shadows of myth, with a focus on the human side of the character, describing a complex personality, as marked by fragility and insecurity as the strength and the courage.

To describe the different aspects of the life and career of John Wayne, the author has made use of many biographies have been published about her figure, and the directors and actors who worked with him, supplemented by interviews he gave throughout their lives or those of some people who knew him well, including Maureen O'Hara, opponent of the actor in several films, and his widow, Pilar Wayne. This documentation is supplemented by hundreds of photographs collected by the author over more than a decade, many of them unpublished in our country.

The fruit of the hard work of research is the most complete biography of John Wayne ever published in Spain, both documentary and iconographic.

    DAS GROSSE JOHN WAYNE BUCH
    (The Great John Wayne Book)
    Wehlmann/ Grossgarten/ Osteried. (2010) (Germany)

It will be available in Germany these days I suppose.
Two fellow collectors put it together with the publisher -
over 2000 photos are in this heavy thing. I don't know, 10 pounds or whatever.
It's really heavy. I'm not a big fan of the publisher - the writing is not that great
(won't affect non-German readers of course) and due to the fact
that the books has 609+ pages, the paper is too thin for my taste.
I supported them with approx 200 LC's missing in their collections anyway...

The basic content is the German promo material.
Almost all posters and LC's used by the distributors from 1949 - 1977!
So from that standpoint it's fantastic.
A unique display of 30 years of collecting. Quite something.

John Wayne was legend in his own lifetime. He was an actor who lived before and behind the camera as an honorable conduct. He embodied the American dream and was the ideal of what is good and beautiful in America.
John Wayne was an actor who was much better than its reputation. He found that he was on the canvas always John Wayne played, but his diverse representations in classics like PANIC AT RED RIVER and THE BLACK HAWK reveal that Wayne was an accomplished actor who was much better than he was generally conceded. The culmination of his life's work came in 1969 with THE MARSHAL, in which he played the aging lawman Rooster Cogburn and was awarded an Oscar.
For decades, John Wayne was one of the greatest movie stars of all time, who lined up to strength. He was a consummate actor, a director and a producer of passion, the quality of the film was always about everything.
John Wayne was a patriot and a man who was convinced that every one of his own destiny is. He was a generous man who gave up his eight friends and always endeavored to create movies that can see the whole family.

    JOHN WAYNE
    Berndt Schulz.(1989) (Germany)

A big scale German publication. Certainly worthwhile for the beautiful reproduction of the photos. But the text will get your ears red. One wonders why Schulz ever set out to do a book about the man when everything he writes is either inaccurate in historical fact or just meant to hurt the Wayne image. One of the guys that cashes in on account of Waynes numerous fans abroad – but at the same time tries to be smart in writing about this icon he doesnt understand. 95 pages

    JOHN WAYNE
    Anton Giulio Mancino. (2003) (Germany)

Handsome German publication if you look just at the pictures but highly inaccurate if you go further and read the text.

    JOHN WAYNE PHOTO BOOK

I did not cover this photoplay not the date but it should be easy to find on the Web.

God, she reminds me of me! DUKE

  • Lasbugas -- I had already tried to find this Photoplay on ebay but without any luck. I'm not sure what you mean by "I did not cover this Photoplay" but if there is any additional information you can give me as to what issue this came from I would greatly appreciate it. That would help me find a copy for my collection.

  • Not that it's much help but these are the Photoplay magazines Duke was in during that period.
