Okay gang this I just had to share with you. Before I start I want you to know that I believe in the higher power and that sometimes our lives are directed by that power which we know of, but quite honestly just can't see.
Now for those here I don't post alot quite simply because my job takes me away from this computer for days and sometimes weeks on end. And until I get my laptop, I have to settle for visiting intermittently.
Okay here's my story. Now I drive a big truck, and I visit Texas every week. And being a Duke fan and a student of western heritage and folklore I have always been wanting to stop along the roadside and visit and read the Texas State Historical Markers. Just to see what history happened where and when. But as my schedules are sometimes quite strict, this has been an impossibility until just this past week. Well to make a long story short, I visited my first historical marker and lo and behold when I walked up to it, I could'nt believe my eyes. It was dedicated to none other than John S. Chisum. And went on to explain where his cattle roamed, how many cattle he had on his spread, and where the ranch outbuildings stood along with the usual personal info. So I tool pictures of it and also shot video of the marker with the digi-cam. But it stuck me as kind of eerie that of all the historical markers in Texas, (and there must be litterally thousands) that the first one I visit is dedicated to one of the actual true life characters that the Duke portrayed.
It also made me cast a wary eye skyward. But being at that marker was to say the least, kind of chilling!!!!!!
For those members who reside in Texas,or tavelling through the state and interested in visiting this marker, it is located aprroximately 12 miles south of Ballinger, Texas on US 83, or about 1 mile north of Painted Rock, Texas. And is located on the west side of the highway.

Duke: Maureen that was wonderful you nailed that scene on the first take, but I have to tell you there's no film in the camera !!!
Maureen: The schmuck always says that!!!!!

    AMEN.

I don't believe we ever shall, but I know that the war on terror MUST BE WON!!!!!
These terrorists must be eliminated, so that future generations do not have to deal with these nuts. This may be a bitter pill to have to swallow with the casualties rising everyday, but I know that if we don't take care of this today, we will have an even harder time taking care of it in the future.
Maybe DUKE was prophetic when he remarked in True Grit< YOU CAN'T SERVE PAPERS ON A RAT!!!!!!

I want to let you in on a book about John Ford, that refers to Duke ( how could it not) and many of the actors in his films.
The book is titled "PRINT THE LEGEND" The Life and Times of John Ford,,, it is authored by Scott Eyman, and gives some great insight to Fords movies, and it's characters with some absolutely great writing. This is a book that by my own experience was very hard to put down. I kept wanting to read just one more chapter. It is well researched and is probably one of the best books I have ever read. It is truly a treasure. If your library has it I would say check it out, and I would be willing to bet that before you finish half the book, you will have purchased it!!!! Absolutely a Gem!!!!!!!!!!!

Widmark: Duke that was kind of you giving Pappy the second unit.
Duke : yeah well I owe everything to him
Worden: But Duke he's been shooting the interior of that Mexican restaurant for two hrs. You planning on doing any fight scenes in there?

Granger: I'm tellin you fellas it was awful big and hairy and moved like the wind.
Duke: Aw Granger you oughta have more sense than that, everyone knows the only thing more furry than Fabians hair is a myth!!!!!!

Hey Viper you might just be surprised at what that BB gun of yours is worth. My little brother left me a message on the answering machine and told me my Daisy is worth $275-$325. And mines a plain jane. I don't know where he got his info, but sounds kind of high to me. But then again I might have some extra beer fund moola I did'nt know about!!!!!
Anyone know where you can check this stuff out?

    Hi Jen,

Yes I will admit that the scene with the explanation seems somewhat clumsy, but for lack of a better explanation the director probably thought it was an ideal scene to end with.
You must remember that studios in those days limited production to only so many days, and or, so many feet of film to be shot. It's quite possible that's why they ended it like they did. If Matt had gotten healthy that would have led to increased production and as everyone knows studios were hard pressed by WWII to stay in the black.

Okay DUKE fans, I was looking thru some notes I had and found this little gem. Now every JW fan knows that he won his only oscar for "True Grit". But did you know that TG was released on June 11th 1969.
And as we all know that June 11th 1979, DUKE bid us farewell!!!
Coincidence I'm not so sure. Maybe the big cowboy in the sky was a bigger JW fan then anyone realized, and wanted Duke to point out the right trail .

That must be some BB gun for that price. Did you see this on their website ? That's where I'm going after I'm done here. Got to check this out. My brother has a boy turning 8, so he might be interested. Come to think of it I wonder what my old daisy is worth? Probably not much but than I've had it since I was 8.

Thanks for the help so far. I don't know that repeated tagging helps as I am led to believe that only one click goes thru per visit.
It's great that you are visiting and helping, but I feel that if you wish to repeat your tags than for those to go thru maybe the best way to accomplish this is to save the site to your favorites, then between your sites that you normally visit you can return to the rescue site and click again. Maybe (not sure) than they will all count.
At least it's worth the try. "THANKS TO ALL"

This is one of (in my opinion) Duke's best films. The entire cast and writers got the family lifestyle correct for the mountaineers.
    Back to your question Jen.
The reason JW wanted to kill Harry Carey was for him abandoning the family. That's well known. If you were watching the movie in fits and starts, then you probably missed Harry Carey's explanation as to why he was not present to help.
Watch in the scene for HC does explain, and the reason was he was in prison.
Colorado Bob was rite in his post. I think Betty Field should have won an oscar for her portrayal. The cross she makes in the dirt before she heads onto the supposedly haunted land is just one of the little things that makes this movie special.
