I find it funny that The Lone Ranger has its top billing to an Indian. I mean, with the title of movie and it stars Johnny Depp? You figure. Of course they did it with the very first Batman with Jack Nicholson as the Joker.

I received a great discount from Warner Brothers site. I was able to purchase with a $5 discount with a $20 purchase two movies. I bought from the One on One a Robby Benson movie from the 1970's about a boy going to college on a basketball scholarship and how he copes with the changes in his life as he grows into a man. And my other purchase is a Blu-Ray of a classic, Rio Bravo for $10.43. Now I am pumped up. I have my favorite Western in my Blu-Ray collection.

I watched The Dark Knight Rises last night on Demand from HBO. I don't really watch the Batman series but wanted to see this one. And thought it was alright for me. I am not a Batman fan, so I did find it sometimes hard to follow but I can understand why the Batman fans love these series. So, if you are one of those kind of fans, I am sure you've seen this one already but if you haven't, be sure too. As for those who is like me, watch it and enjoy it. And if you are not a Batman fan, don't waste your time. That is the best recommendation I can give you. I probably won't see it again.

James Gandolfini was my age. I didn't see the series on HBO and not a big fan of his, but sorry for his death.

Looks like the rains are falling in Canada. Seen cities going through evacuations as well with the rivers over flowing their banks. Hope they are able to return soon. Can't tell if I like this series or not. Liked the first season, but the second season didn't seem as good to me. Did like the season finale, though sad to see the murder of Lily Bell. So I am giving this another season to see where this goes. A lot of loose strings out there for sure. Of course I really like Colm Meaney and his character. Hope they are all alright.

Well, Hawkswill (Keith) I told you that I need to watch more movies with Bond, and you listed ALL movies I haven't seen. Thanks for the heads up.
Rio Bravo with Duke and Ward has a special place in my heart. Two things here for the reason I picked this movie in my #5 spot. One, he did have a small part but it was him that stirred up the major characters to take action upon his death that he wanted to help Chance with the Burdette problem. He was the only one who had the courage to stand against the Burdette gang. He was excellent in the part he played. The other reason, is the was the last time he and Duke would be in a movie together. So, my ranking was personal to me, and is my favorite western.
Thanks again for telling me about those movies.

Great idea for a thread Hondo! The only one I can think of that could really match Duke in the longterm would probably be Clint Eastwood, he is somewhat of an icon having made many great pictures over a near 60 year career and he also benefits from much exposure to younger and wider audiences by having his films played all the time on television. Another contender could perhaps be Stallone because of longevity, appeal and again his films are never off television. Besides that I just don't see anyone coming close to the Duke in worldwide fame and lasting appeal. While Harrison Ford has been good in a few things and iconic in Star Wars I don't think he's famous or prominent enough to match Duke's appeal worldwide, in 50 years people will probably still be watching Star Wars but I think that will be more about the film than Ford himself whereas John Wayne movies are almost a genre of their own.
Forgot about Clint Eastwood. He is the closest icon to John Wayne. I will concede to you on that one. And of course the Indiana Jones Movies too from Harrison Ford.

This topic is unusual in some ways, but to simplify so it won't get way out of sorts. My topic is simple. Is there an actor today that will had an appeal like John Wayne has 34 years (June 11, 2013) after his death? I am a day ahead of his anniversary date. Duke has still been a topic both positive and negative in today's society. His movies are on TV all the time, and he is still popular according to the annual poll from Harris.
Do you think any actor will have this kind of appeal when they die?
Let me start and say, that Harrison Ford could fit that mold. He has done adventure, drama, lite comedy, epic type movies, sci-fi, bio and action. He has been in westerns and TV as well. He does make headlines from time to time but for the most part, his movies are the ones that will be around for years to come and he will in my opinion appeal to generations to come. Is he like John Wayne? Maybe not but he is the closest to him in terms of this subject.
Love to hear your opinions.
And by the way they are opinions, no need to be nasty about it. When you mention the person or persons (male and/or female), tell us why you think they would be in this category.

Lived a great life. Funny that she hasn't made a movie since 1961. R.I.P. Esther.

Identity Thief with Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. The DVD was pretty good. There are sexual situations in the movie, and of course language, but I was entertained. Not for the young and family friendly, but one for laughter.

Ward Bond was such a wonderful actor. He left us before I was born so I can only say that I got to enjoy his past work. And work he did. I see that he did 274 films and most of them were supporting roles. My problem is I keep finding him in movies I didn't know he was in and enjoy what he has done. Here is my ranking of characters I think were his best roles.
20. First Outlaw ~ Buck Benny Rides Again
19. Policeman ~ The Grapes of Wrath
18. Yank ~ The Long Voyage Home *
17. Adam Hartman ~ Drums Along the Mohawk
16. Cmdr. John T. 'Pop' Perry ~ Operation Pacific *
15. Major Seth Adams ~ Wagon Train (TV series)
14. 'Boats' Mulcahey C.B.M. ~ They Were Expendable *
13. Morgan Earp ~ My Darling Clementine
12. Perley "Buck" Sweet ~ 3 Godfathers *
11. Detective Tom Polhaus ~ The Maltese Falcon
10. Tom the Yankee Captain ~ Gone With The Wind
9. Sgt. Maj. Michael O'Rourke ~ Fort Apache *
8. Chief Petty Officer Dowdy ~ Mister Roberts
7. Rev. Capt. Samuel Johnston Clayton ~ The Searchers *
6. Buffalo Baker ~ Hondo *
5. Pat Wheeler ~ Rio Bravo *
4. Ike Botkan ~ Sergeant York
3. John Dodge ~ Wings of Eagles *
2. Father Peter Lonergan ~ The Quiet Man *
1. Bert the Cop ~ It's A Wonderful Life
Sorry, it was not a Duke movie but he was the best in It's a Wonderful Life. If he had lived I bet he would have been in To Kill A Mockingbird which is my favorite movie, made back in 1962. He died in November 5, 1960. I keep making changes and keep finding some wonderful movies he has made. So I started out with a top 5, moved to 10 and again at 15 before I finally made it a Top 20. Just can't seem to stop. And want to see more of these movies that I haven't seen him in. What a wonderful life he had, just cut too short.

Eddie was such a wonderful drummer. I just loved the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and the drumming from Eddie was classic. He did a solo one time back in the 70's that lasted over 5 minutes and Johnny just let him go for it. Being a drummer himself, he appreciated the skills he provided. It was classic. I was a preteen and just happen to catch it one night and was really impressed. I recalled Johnny say, "Now, that is a drummer and Eddie is the man!" It was soooooo coooooool! I never forgot his name, well his first name anyway.
RIP Eddie

Guess What? I am now watching Encore Western Channel and they are celebrating Duke's birthday with his westerns. You figure! A western on a western channel? Anyway, I have just watched The Searchers with Jeffery Hunter, Vera Miles and Ward Bond. There are many others but they are the biggies. Another winner here. What's next?

Flying Leathernecks with Robert Ryan. Another winner from TCM. An ending to a fantastic Duke day and no westerns. Happy Birthday, Duke. You are the greatest.
