I am interested to hear from everyone on this. Other than Duke, who do you think is the best leading western actor on screen? To make this interesting, I'd like to know for the last 20 years. And A classic western actor of yesteryear? This is great! Have Fun!

    Hondo :D

Hey there Big Jake. Sorry, your info is wrong about Chsim. The character who died on the cow horns was played by Forrest Tucker during the fight with Duke. They both fell from the balcony, and Tucker landed with the horns jabbed in his chest.

I'm not sure what you're talking about in the movie, "The Searchers." Maybe if you explain what you mean, that might clear up what you mean.

    Welcome to the board.

    Robbie,

Here is your answer you were looking for. The movie was THE DECEIVER (1931) - Ian Keith played Thorp in this film and John Wayne took over when this character became a corpse.

He's not really in the movie, but I guess you can count that. He was just a stand in.

    Hondo B)

P.S. Idaho, thanks for the info on Two-Fisted Law.

The last movie Duke was in with Columbia pictures was Two-Fisted Law released August 30, 1932. I don't know anything about the picture that tells me if Duke was a corpse or not, so if anyone seen the movie, they might be able to tell us that. It stars Tim McCoy, Alice Day and Walter Brennan. I only have a two sentence synopisis of the movie with no information about Duke.

    Hondo

    Hey Robbie,

Welcome to the board. This is a good question. I don't have all of the Duke's movies on DVD, but the ones I do have, do not have deleted scenes. That includes:

    The Searchers
    The Quiet Man
    The Shootist
    Stagecoach
    The War Wagon
    Donovan's Reef
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    True Grit
    The Alamo
    Sands of Iwo Jima
    The Longest Day
    She Wore A Yellow RIbbon
    Rio Grande
    Rio Bravo
    Sons Of Katie Elder
    The Horse Soldiers
    Hellfighters
    A Lady Takes A Chance
    Hatari!
    The Green Berets
    Red River

The Greatest Story Ever Told does have deleted scenes, but Duke makes a brief appearence in that movie.

Maybe someone can tell you about the other moives.

    Hondo

    Bob,

Duke's character met with death in 8 of his movies. They are:

    1. Central Airport
    2. Reap the Wild Wind
    3. The Fighting Seabees
    4. Wake of the Red Witch
    5. Sands of Iwo Jima
    6. The Alamo
    7. The Cowboys
    8. The Shootist

"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" had Duke already dead, but reflected on his life with the James Stewart character. Count it or not he did not die in the movie.

    Hondo :)

    :)

Batjac production company became into being May 25, 1954 after the movie, "Wake of the Red Witch" (Duke starring with Gail Russell). In the movie there was a Trading Company called Batjack (ficitious). He linked the film's plot with his own fight with cancer.

    :(

The Wayne Fellows partnership was desolved due to the breakup of Bob & Eleanor Fellows, and tying Wayne involed in their case. Duke stood up and knocked down his chair while the couple shouted at each other, and told them that this was not any of his business, and walked out. That was the end of that and the start of Batjac productions.

The suggestion of "Batjac" producitons came from Michael Wayne, but there was a typographical error. The original spelling was "B-A-T-J-A-C-K". The secretary mispelled it, and took out the "K". The papers went to leagal, and when it came back, Duke said he liked the K better but it didn't matter, so they kept it and that is the beginning of Batjac productions.

:o The answer is C. Mae Marsh. She was in six films with the Duke. They were not leading lady parts, but she was in six.

    A. Maureen O'Hara - 5
    Rio Grande
    The Quiet Man
    The Wings of Eagles
    McLintock
    Big Jake

    B. Claire Trevor - 4
    Stagecoach
    Allegheny Uprising
    Dark Command
    The High & The Mighty

    C. Mae Marsh - 6
    Fort Apache
    Three Godfathers
    The Fighting Kentuckian
    The Quiet Man
    The Wings of Eagles
    Donovan's Reef

    D. Vera Miles - 4
    The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    The Green Berets
    Hellfighters

    E. Alissa Wayne - 3
    The Alamo
    The Comancheros
    McLintock

    F. Mildred Natwick - 4
    The Long Voyage Home
    Three Godfathers
    She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
    The Quiet Man

    Little Duke,

He would have had more, but politics was the reason for that. Some of the elites kept him out because he didn't go with the crowd. I believe that the Oscar for True Grit "Best Actor" was for his life achievement.

:D Did you happen to see Maureen O'Hara on Larry King last week. She is great!

    B) She said something during the interview that perked my interest. There was a scene at the end of "The Quiet Man" where they have the characters closeup and ended up with Duke and Maureen in a shot. You see Maureen whisper something in the Duke's ear and he reacts to it. Now, John Ford (the Director) told (maybe the word should be "ordered") Maureen to say something that she would never say, to get a reaction out of Duke. Anyway, it did, and Ford printed that and that's the end. :)

Larry King tried to get Maureen to disclose what she said to Duke, but refused to do so. I can't lip read, but I don't think you can because of the angle. Just curious. <_<

:D Glad to be here at this site. As I write this, I am watching "The Quiet Man" on AMC. He is what makes America so great. I wonder what he would think about this country today.

I am looking forward to this site, and what we will be talking about in the future. I am a collector of his movies, and enjoy seeing so many of his works. I look forward to seeing, "The High & The Mighty," and "Island In The Sky" when they hit the DVD circuit.

:o Just one word of advice to any and all that are looking for a John Wayne movie. If the label reads from a distributor from Goodtimes Video, don't buy it! The quality is poor to say the least, like "McLintock!" What a waste of a great movie with his number one leading lady. This is a great movie, and even though I was only 2 1/2 years old in it's theatical release, I enjoyed seeing in the theater years later. Funny, I didn't realize that this movie was released just 10 days prior to the Kennedy assignation.

Be sure to wait for the Batjac releases for the best qualities in JW movies. That includes "TH&TM", "Island in the Sky", "Hondo", and "McLintock." I am sure there are others. By the way, were you aware that "Lady Takes A Chance," starring Jean Arthur and second billing with none other JW? It will be released January 21, 2003. For the best price, I found it online at DeepDiscountDVD.com for $9.96 including shipping. :)

 Thanks Kevin for the board. I will be sure to use it the way it's suppose to be used. Now, for a trival question. <_< "What actress was in the Duke's movies the most?"
    A. Maureen O'Hara
    B. Claire Trevor
    C. Mae Marsh
    D. Vera Miles
    E. Alissa Wayne
    F. Mildred Natwick

    B) Take care, and talk to you soon. Answer this Friday.
