I saw the Coen remake last evening and while I like it, do not think it, as a Western, surpasses Duke's version. I will say this - the new "True Grit" is now my favorite Coen movie.
As for the story itself, I liked the original better, especially the ending.I haven't been here for a while, so I am catching up on my reading. I checked this topic out first since it is a current event. After reading all the posts I have come to the conclusion that Stumpy may possibly be my long lost brother. Your observations echo my own, exactly. When I started to comment on a post, I would find there was no need because you had already stated my thoughts. Since I haven't seen the new TG I will have to wait and see if my opinion of the movie is the same as yours. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my way of thinking. Thanks Stumpy!

Brenda O' Malley is home making dinner, as usual, when Tim Finnegan arrives at her door. "Brenda, may I come in?" he asks. "I've somethin' to tell ya". "Of course you can come in, you're always welcome, Tim. But where's my husband?" "That's what I'm here to be telling ya, Brenda." There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery..." "Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me." "I must, Brenda. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry." Finally, she looked up at Tim. "How did it happen, Tim?" "It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned." "Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me truth, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?" "Well, Brenda... no. In fact, he got out three times to pee."
