Pittsburgh! One of the Duke´s movies I had not seen before. It was released in Germany on DVD a few weeks ago in English language and with German subtitles... The Story was O.K. and the Duke, Marlene Dietrich and Randolph Scott are great, but "The Spoilers" and "Seven Sinners" are better movies!

Plymouth Adventure from 1952. Another great character role for Spencer Tracy as Captain of the Mayflower...
Some episodes of Magnum p.i.. Tom Selleck is great fun to watch! -
A Guy Named Joe. - What a wonderful old movie for a rainy afternoon! Starring Spencer Tracy and Ward Bond as pilots. One of them dead and comming back as ghost to help young Air Force pilots... Fun, war, love and romance!

"The Thing From Another World" in honor of James ArnessA real classic SciFi movie! - I have to buy the DVD... The 1951 "Thing Movie" was much better than the remake of the 80ths with James Spader, although the alien creature could not change its shape (in the original book it could change its shape too).

Goodye and RIP, James Arness - there will always be a place in our hearts for You and I am sure, You found a wonderful place in cowboy-heaven!

Can you kinds give a run-down on it?
Book 1 & 2 where great, but I did not like Book 3! - Elkanah Bent, who was killed in an explosion comes back again and he kills Orri Main and the wife of George Hazard at the beginning. Madeline tries to run the plantation of the Mains together with the former slaves and George goes to the south to help her. They get a lot of trouble with the Ku-Klux Clan and in the end George and Medeline become a couple...
I only watched Book 3 for one time, because for me it is more like a soap, than a portrait of North and South after the Civil War, and a woman running a plantation in the South short after the Civil War together with former slaves as co-workers seems stupid to me. I cannot imagine that this had been possible in 1866, because of the role women and Blacks played in this society at that time. - O.K. George comes because he needs a man to do this job, but all is so different from Book 1 and 2, and I don´t like Elkanah Bent to come back again. It´s a typical stupid TV-thing, that You can´t kill the bad guy! Blow him up, and he will be back to make it for another season!
Book 1 and 2 where a real great story about the time before and during the Civil War. I watched it on TV many years ago and even as I was in hospital because of a riding accident I did not miss one episode! Now I have the DVDs at home. Maybe You like Book 3, Ringo Kid, but I don´t. Book 2 had such a wonderful ending: George and Orri, North and South go hand in hand together into a bright future...! -
I watched a few episodes of Star Trek Enterprise with Scott Bakula. - Most of the time I watch science fiction or western....

Another nice Lone Star movie! - I liked the story about this friendship between the Duke and the outlaw. I watched two versions of the movie right now: a beautiful remastered black and white version with fine new German dubbing and a colorized version with the old bad German dubbing...
The quality of the picture and the dubbing of these old John Wayne movies released on DVD in Germany were real bad during the last years! -
I watched the Desert Trail yesterday for the Duke´s birthday. I have never seen it before, and I liked it! Watching the Duke´s old B-Western movies is great fun and I have not seen most of them before, so there is always a "new" John Wayne movie for me...!
Sometimes I do not like the idea of a misterious bad guy, always hiding or being disguised in some of these movies (most of the time You find out, who the bad guy real is in the very first moment, when he appears), but Desert Trail was different from that! Interesting story, enough action and a lot of humor!
I like to compare these fast filmed low budget movies to weekly TV-series of today. It´s the same hurry in production. But in comparison to many modern TV-actors the Duke always tried to do his best, even in these low-budget movies! -
For the Duke´s Birthday: The colorized version of Rio Grande and The Desert Trail!

A Gathering of Eagles starring Rock Hudson. I am not a Rock Hudson Fan and I don´t like him in Western movies, because he is not a great cowboy actor, but he was great as wing commander in A Gathering of Eagles (and he was great in The Martian Chronicles too). A Gathering of Eagles is about a bomber wing in Cold War and the new wing commander, who pushes his men to work better, faster and harder. - The Duke´s Flying Leathernecks came to my mind as I watched A Gathering of Eagles... Both are great movies about military pilots.
-
Ride him, Cowboy! Starring the Duke and a great horse named Duke doing wonderful tricks! I had not seen that movie before and it was real great fun, maybe my favourite of John Wayne´s older movies!
The Lucky Texan. I watched a beautiful colorized version. -
A few episodes of The Rifleman and High Chaparral.
-
Flying Tigers. One of the Duke´s great war movies. I watched the original black and white version, but I have a colorized version too...
-
I watched the first four episodes of The Rifleman yesterday. I enjoyed guest stars like Michael Landon and Dennis Hopper!
- They released episodes 1-16 here in Germany on DVD now and the box was real cheap. -
The whole free western world thanks the US Special Forces for what they have done today!
