Thans ethan! I knew they both attended Ronald Reagan's second inauguration as Governor of California in 1971 so I guessed they must have at least met.

I never heard about that. What happened between Newman and Heston?
As for the Butch and Sundance movie, I liked it. Thought it was very entertaining and that it played more on the legend of the two rather than the actual history.
Newman and Heston were friends in the 1960s when they both supported the Civil Rights movement. However, as we know Chuck at some point began to switch his political views. In 1983 Newman and Heston took part in a TV debate on President Reagan's Star Wars defense system. Heston, arguing in favor, easily won the argument. Newman never forgave him for this. When he heard that Heston was due to introduce him at an award ceremony in 1995 he insisted Heston should be replaced with the ultra left-wing Donald Sutherland.
I saw this movie only a few weeks ago and quite enjoyed it. Unfortunately I thought Maureen O'Hara and Tyrone Power had zero chemistry between them, perhaps it would have worked better with Errol Flynn as Jamie?
Did John Wayne know Michael Landon?
Thanks chester. I'm not at all surprised there is such a variety of fans here for the greatest actor and movie star of all time!
Sorry to bump up an old thread but I've been reading through this and I am surprised people didn't know Marvin was a Democrat. Just because he was in three movies with John Wayne didn't mean he shared his views.
i thought this was an ok film - it was a film all the family could watch although i couldn t help noticing the number of cigaretttes jw was smoking. it had a lot of humour in it and i loved the scenes with the baby elephants. it looked as though they were all being well looked after as well. the only bit of the film i didn t like was the ending - i don t know what i was expecting but i thought it was a bit feeble - all in all though 7/10 for me
Does anyone know why there was so much smoking in Hatari? I know it was made in a very different era, but whenever I watch the movie I can't get over just how many cigarettes there were.
Hi everyone, I have been a fan of John Wayne since I was in my early teens. I hope to be able to post here regularly in 2010.
I didn't like this western at all. Of course it didn't help that both Newman and Redford were so far to the Left, but it really didn't feel like a proper western to me. My opinion of Newman went down a lot after I read how he treated Charlton Heston.
