I call BS on the main premise of the author saying that John Wayne was using his big closing scene in The Searchers as a statement on his views of the way Hollywood was heading.
It’s already been well documented and spoken by Duke himself what the meaning of that scene was and who he was honoring in it.
And as to the author’s statements of Duke being disgruntled about seeing the industry headed down the toilet well what can you say except that he was right!
By and large what we get out of Hollywood today is garbage. They haven’t had an original thought since 1978.
Duke saw it coming and was sad to see it. I’m sure part of his frustration was in the realization that he couldn’t prevent it.

That’s not in the movie. I wish Yates would have let Ford alone to let it run instead of cutting him off.

The Duke was Indiana Jones before Indiana Jones was cool!

I found this to be a sad episode. Patrick shared at one point how Christmas became a sad experience for him once his dad married Pilar because Duke was with his new family instead of his older children. At another point Ethan takes the Lord’s name in vain exasperated that they don’t seem to have any happy Christmas memories to share. I found this strangely ironic that in an episode ostensibly dedicated to celebrating Our Lord’s birthday he’s taking His name in vain.
I’m not saying this to insult. Just an observation.

TCM has Rio Bravo up for viewing now. Seems the film was modified to support 4K viewing. There is a really good intro done by Martin Scorsese where he talks about the artistic effort Hawks put into the first scenes of the movie harkening back to the silent film days. Seems Hawks wanted to express the skills of the silent film work before they were lost all together. This gave me a whole new appreciation of this film. Highly encourage a viewing if you can catch it there.

The original Indiana Jones! 🙂

I also heard he got crossways with Duke after this film but I can’t recall the details of it.
