    Hi Arthur -
Gene Evans also was in a made-for-TV movie, "The Alamo: Thirteen Days of Glory" from 1987 and in Gregory Peck's "The Bravados." He made a great character actor and can be found in a lot of movies from the 50s onward and was featured in many TV productions during that time also.

Slightly off topic I have just watched the second half of a truly dreadful film starring Rory Calhoun called Apache Uprising which also featured among others Gene Evans, Arthuir Hunnicutt, John Anderson, Lon Chaney jnr and Corin Calvert and during which two actors who bear no resemblance at all to Calhoun and Evans indulge in a close up fist fight. While watching it I thought this must be Republic at its worst and was amazed to see that it had been made by Paramount.

    But I digrese

  • Hi Arthur
It's also interesting to know that Wayne/Batjac tried to get Spencer for the role eventually played by Wayne, Whistling Dan in The High and the Mighty (for which Spence would have had the right age, Wayne looked a tick too young for the part) - but anyway, Tracy backed out when the film was all lined up.

  • Hi Roland

With Tracy in the lead instead of Wayne it brings out two questions

would Batjac have held the film back from video/DVD for over fifty years.

Would it have become the cult film it has become, or would it have turned out as just an issued film among the many made during 1954.

I didn't know Cuthbertson was Australian, Arthur. I best remember him specifically in "The Guns of Navarone" where he played the standoffish British officer who tried to protect the eavesdropper prior to the team leaving on the fishing boat. As you say, he appeared in quite a lot of movies - is he still alive?
