On this day 17th September the sun is shining and for the third time this season Portsmouth are sitting at Number One in the English Premiership, they are unbeaten and haven't conceeded a goal all season.

103 years ago the actress Dolores Costello was born. The link with John Wayne is tenuous as they were both in Noahs Ark, one in a leading role the other Wayne in the swimming tank along with Andy Devine and thousands of other extras.
    From IMDB

    Quote

Dolores Costello was once known as the "Goddess of the Silent Screen" but will probably be better remembered today as Drew Barrymore's grandma. She was born in 1905 (or 1906) to Maurice and Mae Costello. Her father began his film career in 1908. He would become soon become the most popular matinee idol of his day. He gave Dolores and her sister Helene their screen debut in 1911. Dolores appeared in numreous pictures throughout the 1910's and the early 20's mostly with her father and sister. She later appeared on the New York stage with her sister in the "George White Scandals" of 1924. They were then signed on to Warners Bros. where Dolores met her future husband John Barrymore.

Barrymore soon made Dolores his costar in THE SEA BEAST in 1926. During their lengthy kissing scene in this picture Dolores fainted in John's arms. They married in 1928 despite the misgivings of her mother who would die the following year at the age of forty five. They had two children DeDe in 1931 and John Drew Barrymore the following year. Dolores took time off from her movie career in the early 30's so she could raise her young children. Her sister Helene and her new husband actor Lowell Sherman sucessfully convinced Dolores to Divorce Barrymore in 1935, mainly because of his drinking.

After the divorce Dolores continued to act in several big budget pictures and career seemed to be back on track. Her physical appearance however was greatly damaged due to harsh studio make up. The skin on her cheeks were in the process of deteriorating forcing her into early retirement. She lived in semi seclusion on her Southern Californian avocado farm called Fall Brook Ranch. Alot of her memorbila and papers from both the Barrymore and Costello family were destroyed in a flood.

Seiter who used him as an extra in The Mad Whirl (1925) starring May McAvoy. Grady remained in Hollywood for the next 55 years. He specialized in playing naive, slightly befuddled young men, adding comedic bits to comedies and dramas. His most famous association came from appearing in four movies with W.C. Fields: The Pharmacist (1933), Man on the Flying Trapeze (1935), You Can't Cheat an Honest Man (1939) and The Bank Dick (1940). He was also a regular on "The Egg and I" (1951) and "The Pruitts of Southampton" (1966) television series. In total, he appeared in over 200 feature films and short subjects spanning 1924 to 1979. His final film appearance was in Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979). In 1994 he moved to the Motion Picture and Television Home and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California where he died September 17, 1995, of natural causes.[quote]

In addition to being Miss New Orleans in 1931, Dorothy Lamour worked as a Chicago elevator operator, band vocalist (for her first husband, bandleader Herbie Kaye) and radio performer. In 1936 she donned her soon-to-be-famous sarong for her debut at Paramount, The Jungle Princess (1936), and continued to play a female Tarzan-Crusoe Gauguin-girl-with make-up through the war years and beyond. The most famous of these was in the Bob Hope/Bing Crosby "Road to ..." movies - a strange combination of adventure, slapstick, ad-libs and Hollywood inside jokes that became very popular. Of these she said, "I was the happiest and highest-paid straight woman in the business." As she aged, however, the quality of her films dropped. Among her serious films were Johnny Apollo (1940) and A Medal for Benny (1945).

101 years ago the producer director plane designer Howard huges was born a legendary man his last two production efforts for RKO were Jet Pilot and The Conqueror which incidentally and as reported a year ago, was released in Sweden 50 years ago today.

    From IMDB

    Quote

Multi-millionaire businessman, film producer, film director, and aviator, born in Houston, Texas. He studied at prestigious Rice University and the even more prestigious California Institute of Technology. Inherited his father's machine tool company in 1923. In 1926 he ventured into films, producing Hell's Angels (1930), Scarface (1932) and The Outlaw (1943). He also founded his own aircraft company, designed, built and flew his own aircraft, and broke several world air speed records (1935-1938). His most famous aircraft, the Hercules (nicknamed "The Spruce Goose"), was an oversized wooden seaplane designed to carry 750 passengers, which was completed in 1947 but flew only once over a distance of one mile. Throughout his life he shunned publicity, eventually becoming a recluse but still controlling his vast business interests from sealed-off hotel suites, and giving rise to endless rumors and speculation. In 1971 an "authorized" biography was announced, but the authors wound up in prison for fraud, and the mystery surrounding him continued until his death.

100 years ago the actor Victor Wong was born he played a Chinese passenger in Flying Tigers.

98 years ago the actor George Piltz was born in Hawaii. He only appeared in eight pictures all of which and including Wake of the Red Witch he played a native.

94 years ago the actor Charles G Martin was born. If no one else had been born on this day he would be assured of his place in film and John Wayne fans history as he played the bartender Murray in The Shootist and was the last person to kill John Wayne on screen.

33 years ago the actor Ted Adams died aged 80 he appeared in supporting and minor roles in almost 200 pictures including 3 Texas Steers and Sagebrush Trail.
    From IMDB

    Quote

The son of vaudeville performers, Richard Theodore "Ted" Adams, was part of his parent's troupe before attending Cornell University at the age of 18. After college, he did stock work for three years before going to New York City and stage work there. For more than half his life he performed on the stage before coming to films circa 1926. He and his good friend Leo Carrillo performed together in Porter Emerson Brown's play "The Bad Man" in 1920, and Adams was also in the Broadway production of "Kongo" which starred Walter Huston in 1926.
His earliest documented film role was as the doctor in Rayart's "Road Agent", starring Al Hoxie, in 1926, and he made his sound-film debut in 1930's "Under Texas Skies," starring Bob Custer. Adams quickly established himself in westerns in which he worked almost exclusively for 25 years in over 200 films. He was a mainstay performer (mostly lead villains) for the low-budget films cranked out by the independents such as Supreme, Metropolitan, Puritan, Colony and Victory in the 30s, and PRC and Monogram in the 1940s, in addition to appearing in films from Republic, Columbia, Paramount and Universal.

Following a role in Bill Elliott's "Kansas Territory", (Monogram, 1952) and some TV work on Russell Hayden's "Cowboy G-Men", Ted Adams hung up his spurs at the age of 62. He lived quietly in retirement until his death from heart disease at the age of 83. Widowed at the time of his death, September 24, 1973, he was at Braewood Convalescence Hospital in South Pasadena, his place of residence prior to his death. His cremated remains were place at Chapel of the Pines Cemetary in Los Angeles

3 years ago the actor Lyle Bettger died aged 88, he played in a number of westerns but featured with Wayne as a member of the Nazis in The Sea Chase.
    From IMDB

    Quote

Handsome, blond-haired, steely-eyed villain in many film Westerns. He was never the grizzled outlaw, covered in trail dust. No, he was the immaculate-looking, "respectable" (but two-faced) dandy in silk damask vest, often puffing suavely on a cheroot, whose ashes he then might contemptuously flick in the hero's face. He could confront an antagonist wearing a wry smile, even while neatly inserting his dirk between the latter's ribs. One wonders why Bettger, with his Aryan looks and menacing sneer, never became typecast as the stereotypical Nazi SS officer or Gestapo interrogator. (Perhaps the man was just fortunate in that regard.)

  • Arthur;

You said that it was ok to put up a Post Here, so here is a story that I know a little about on the Legendary Howard Hughes. :)

When I was Flying for the Hearst in California, Bill Hearst jr. at that time, had me Produce a T.V. Special on "The Hearst Castle" and "The Aircraft of Howard Hughes." It it still shown on Cable and sometimes on the History Channel.

The Hearst Corporation at this time had a 1/2 interest in A.B.C and was called "Hearst- A.B.C." Bill Hearst jr. had been a very good friend of Howard Hughes and Flown the World in one of Howard's Aircraft. :o

Bill Hearst and I flew to Houston, Texas and got to go into Howard's Private Vault to look at Pictures of His Aircraft and other things that could be used in the T.V. Special. We had some Great time looking at all the things of this "Legend of Air Power" :agent:

Later in the 1980s when I was Flying Jane Russell and Her Husband to and from Santa Barbara, California we had long talks about Howard Hughes and his Films and His Aircraft that She had Flown in Many Time. I did not think much about the Story Lines of His Films , but you could not Beat His Filming of Aircraft in His Films, they were the Best and most of the people that knew him the Best said that He was a True Aviation Genius!!!

87 years ago the actress Barbara Britton was born She was in Reap the Wild Wind. She only made 52 pictures but she must have made quite an impression.
    (From IMDB

    Quote

Sunny and vivacious to a tee, lovely, well-coiffed Barbara Britton looked like she stepped out of magazine as she entered our homes daily as the 'Revlon Girl' on 50s and 60s TV. She captured that "perfect wife/perfect mother" image with perfect poise and grace. It all began for the radiant blue-eyed redhead in equally sunny Long Beach, California where she taught Sunday school and attended Long Beach City College majoring in speech. Her interest in acting, however, took hold and she began to pursue the local stage. Her lucky 'Hollywood' story unfolds as a Pasadena Tournament of Roses parade representative who was caught on the front pages of the newspaper, scouted out and signed by Paramount movie agents. Barbara debuted in Secret of the Wasteland (1941), a Hopalong Cassidy western. She continued on with modest but showy parts in Louisiana Purchase (1941), So Proudly We Hail (1943), and Till We Meet Again (1944). Underused for most of her film career as a pretty, altruistic, genteel young thing in such durable films as The Great John L. (1945), The Virginian (1946), and Bandit Queen (1950), Barbara turned to the stage and TV in the 1950s. After co-starring with Richard Denning in "Mr. and Mrs. North," she became Revlon's lovely pitchwoman and remained on view for 12 years with the company. In between she appeared on the top dramatic shows of the day, co-starring in her final movie with The Spoilers (1955) opposite Jeff Chandler and Rory Calhoun. Various Broadway shows included "Getting Married," her debut in 1951, "Wake Up, Darling (1956), and "Thee and Me" (1965). More and more time was spent raising her family (her husband was a doctor and psychiatrist) and Barbara was only occasionally seen in the 1970s. Much of her work would be in regional or dinner theater productions, sometimes appearing with two of her four grownup children in such shows as "40 Carats" and "A Roomful of Roses." Sadly, her two younger children died while very young. Oldest daughter Christina Britton became an actress and operatic singer while son Ted appeared on episodic TV. One of Barbara's last roles was on the daytime soap "One Life to Live" in 1979, a year before she died of cancer.

37 years ago the special effects man Howard Lyedecker died aged 59. He did the special effects for Wake of The Red Witch, Flame of the Barbary Coast, The fighting Kentuckian, The flying Tigers and The Quiet Man.
    (From IMDB)

    Quote

Howard "Babe" Lydecker and his older brother Theodore Lydecker were the undisputed masters of miniature special effects in Hollywood from 1935-1953. Begining their careers with Nat Levine's Mascot Pictures in the early 1930s, they were swept up in Mascot's 1935 merger with Monogram Pictures and Liberty Pictures to form Republic Pictures, headed by the owner of film processing lab Consolidated Film Industries, the autocratic Herbert J. Yates). The Lydeckers were perhaps the primary beneficiaries of the merger. It allowed their creativity to run wild, giving them unlimited access to CFI's optical effects at a time when most of Republic's product demanded high-caliber special effects. The production pressures put on them by Yates ironically gave them the structure and incentive they needed to excel. Babe became the head of Mascot's old carpenter shop and moved into the back lot of Republic's studio, eventually supervising some 20 technicians. Babe and Ted worked closely (they were nicknamed "the twins," despite there being a three-year difference in their ages) together during the entire production history of Republic Pictures (until its demise in 1956). The Lydeckers' effects were the envy of every studio in Hollywood and their talents can probably be seen to best advantage in Flying Tigers (1942), a WW II action picture about a squadron of American pilots fighting the Japanese in China, with loads of dogfights, plane crashes, etc.--and was shot using only mock-ups and miniatures, with not a single real aircraft being used throughout the entire picture

    Quote

As a child, Robert Montgomery enjoyed a privileged life, as his father was the president of the New York Rubber Co. When he died, the fortune was gone and Robert worked at a number of jobs. He later went to New York to be a writer, and on the advice of a friend tried acting. He worked with George Cukor on the stage and his first film, at MGM, was So This Is College (1929). When Norma Shearer picked him to be her leading man in Private Lives (1931), he was set. He played many likable characters over the years, covering the gamut from very poor to very rich. In 1935 he became President of the Screen Actors Guild. His stay with MGM lasted 16 years, and was only interrupted by WWII when he joined the navy. He saw action in both Europe and the Pacific. He returned to MGM in 1945 and co-starred with John Wayne in the John Ford-directed They Were Expendable (1945) and then made his directorial debut with Lady in the Lake (1947) (although he had directed a few scenes, uncredited, in "They Were Expendable" when Ford took ill). He then left MGM to become an independent director, preferring work behind the camera instead of in front. He was a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities in 1947 during the McCarthy era and then spent most of his time on television and stage. His popular show, "Robert Montgomery Presents" (1950), was where daughter Elizabeth Montgomery got her first acting job.

The film "The Aviator" was Pretty Much the way it was in those days but there was much more about Howard Hughes that is not shown in the film. Not only was He a Great Pilot, Movie Producer, but one of the Best Inventors of the last 100 years. Many of His Inventions in Aviation are still used Today by Countries all over the World. :o

He even came up with the "First Electric Hospital Bed" that was unknown at that time, that would let Him Sit up by pushing a Button, when He was in the Hospital after He had Crashed one of His Test Aircraft in Beverly Hills, California! :fear2: This was when "He Got Hooked On Pain Killers" and from then on it was All Down Hill!!! :( At this time He was One of the Richest Men in The World. :)
