  • Reason i'm asking this is because I made a great deal with a friend and will sometime soon be gaining an instant collection of Westerns. Please read the list and let me know if you have any of these and what you think of them except where commented on? I know there are a bunch listed but I stand to sort of inherit many of these from a friend who is not really into westerns. Best thing is that they are all on DvD.

  • Hi Ringo,

I really enjoy Santa Fe Trail. I don't think it is very accurate historically, but there is a lot of fine action with a great cast.

My heroes have always been cowboys.

  • Man From Laramie stars James Stewart. He plays a resolute vigilante obsessed with finding the man responsible for his brother's death. Among the suspects are an arrogant cattle baron played by Donald Crisp, his sadistic son played by Alex Nicole and his ranch foreman played by Arthur Kennedy.

One explosive confrontation, in which Stewart is dragged by a wild horse and shot in the hand at close range, is one of movie history's most memorable sequences.

  • Hi Harold, Nathan.B. Hondo.

Harold, I am a member of GBN and already watched one of their films. It is a nice site.

Nathan, thanks for your comments on Santa Fe Trail. It's been many years since I last saw it and will be looking forward to watching it again. If i'm not mistaken, this is a pre-Civil War movie?

Hondo, thanks for your info on Man From Laramie. I cannot recall if I ever saw any of it or not, but looking forward to it as well.

I did some checking on some of the movies I'd never heard of before over at IMDB and found many really do sound like some good westerns of the times. I hope they all arrive at the same time. If they do, I guess it will be about 2 months before I will be able to see any network TV :D

  • Ringo,

I failed to mention that I do have The Man From Laramie on DVD, and I though it was a great movie. I do recommend you see it and get it when you can. I'm going to see it again. It's been a while.

  • Hi Jay, Hondo.

Jay, :D you got that right. i love this place and now spend more time here than on historical or militaria sites combined. :fear: scary, aint it? :D

Hondo, That is definately good to hear on that movie because I will be getting all of these but not sure if all at once or not. The reason I am getting so many at once though is because a friend of mine owes me a few hundred $$$ but can't pay me back in cash so-------knowing for my love of westerns has made a deal with a friend of his for these by trading some militaria for the whole lot. Once I get all these, then he will have paid me off.

  • Hi, Carl,
Been off-line a few days and just picked up on this one,
I've got, some of the films you've mentioned,

ALVAREZ KELLY- William Holden, Richard Widmark,Civil War western, rustling cattle to the conferderates.Directed by Edward Dmytrick

BACK IN THE SADDLE- is not Roy, but a 1941, Gene Autry film.
The title song, becoming Gene's famous signature tune,
    'Back in the Saddle, again'

KING OF THE PECOS- John Wayne,Muriel Evans, Yakima Canutt. film released in 1936. Duke returns, to claim his boyhood home, back from an evil cattle baron.

    WESTWARD HO-John Wayne,Sheila Mannors, Yakima Canutt,released 1935.
Duke looking for his brother, forms a vigialnte group, to catch some outlaws, but his brother is the leader of the gang!

DISTANT DRUMS- was a Gary Cooper film, where he is a retired Captain looking for prisoners, captured by Indians, in the Everglades and Florida.

THE PROFESSIONALS- Just been on TV, this week, Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, and I think Robert Ryan,in Mexico, looking for the loot. Good Film!

Suffice to say, I've kept them all, so to comment on them
means, as far as I'm concerned, the ones above are all worth collecting.
THE MAN FROM LARAMIE, being a great favourite of mine!
Directed by Anthony Mann, and also featured Arthur Kennedy and Jack Elam.

    Best Wishes,
    Keith

  • Hi Keith, thanks for your comments on all of these and thanks for correcting me on the Gene Autry movie--I don't know what I was thinking when I posted Roy Rogers?? I must have been thinking about his movie Don't Fence Me In.

Anyway, I can hardly await for them all to arrive. My friend is going to send these 10 movies at a time because of the high postage and he spent too much at a Militaria show in Portland, Oregon over the weekend. :headbonk:
