I've long been convinced that America's labor unions are the main reason so many American jobs have been "outsourced" to foreign countries. Hell, they've priced themselves out of the market.

Anyone with common sense would realize this! Makes you think about the thinking processes of the population. We wouldn't have unions if people thought about this and saw how these organizations are bleeding the country dry.

  • For some reason, I really like this kid - he reminds me of me at that age.

Thought I don't know for sure, I suspect that he's more than a little rebellious, just as I've always been. He just has a mischievious look. That and his red hair makes him very appealing, I think.

  • During the American Revolution, a song popular in England was entitled "The World Turned Upside Down". This situation definitely fits that description, as it constitutes something I never, ever thought I'd see in my lifetime. It's just almost unbelievable.

Yeah but what makes me mad is that we( the idiots in the government using my tax dollars) gave them money thinking they would stay afloat and now they are filing for bankruptcy anyways. Should have done it about 4 months ago. We have not seen the bottom yet and that is what is really scary. I think it won't be till the fall before things start looking like they are going to turn around. But that won't help the jobs outlook, they are either lost to other countries or just won't comeback right away.

Life is hard, its even harder when your stupid!!

  • I saw a music video by a country singer. I believe his name is John Rich(?); anyway, it was about the corporate bailout and how Detroit was dying. I don't know Rich's political persuasion, but if he's a conservative, it would be the first time I heard a country song blasting this big business bailout, instead of always supporting them without any thought. It was refreshing. And I say this as a conservative!

Imagine that, the government using socialism to save capitalism...unbelieveable..and you thought the New Deal was generous...

    "Day off?"
    "Off day."

  • I'll believe it when I see it - and I ain't gonna hold my breath.

You already have. Let's say you run your business into the ground. And then you call your Uncle--let's call him "Sam"--You, in total financial collapse, wave the American flag, cry copious, patriotic tears--"patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel", remember?-- and Uncle Sam cuts you a check, and bills everyone else to pay the price for your failure. And guess what? You can now not only save your business, but you can take that two week vacation in [select destination here]!

I hope that if, God forbid, I fail to pay my home mortgage, that the government bails me out, too. Somehow, I don't think that'll happen...

It's amazing how sacred big business is in the USA and that the government will use any means necessary to save it, even methods it normally deems "un-American.":vomit:

I'm not sure I get your point in paragraph 1. Are you perhaps suggesting that as a military retiree, I haven't earned the pension that Uncle Sam pays me each month?

As for your conclusions in paragraphs 2 and 3, I agree. However, as someone who's obsessive about bill (including mortgage) paying, I don't expect the taxpayers to bail me out of any financial responsibilities I freely assumed.

Absolutely not. You've earned that pension through your service; the auto companies--the aforementioned flag wavers-- are reaching for a handout and trying to play a "national pride" angle. Since when is a corrupt, poorly-run corporation that looks for a handout a symbol of national pride?

BTW, for what it's worth, I agree with your assessment of the UAW and ther ilk...

Ah so - thanks for the clarification.

  • Gonna have to get a copy of this. I thought he was the best actor in Hollywood.

Well, I just finished it and while it wasn't a great book, it wasn't bad.

Levy admits at the end that he had not personally interviewed Newman for compiling the info he used in writing this book but I'll say one thing, he musta been a very diligent researcher because the book is absolutely filled with tidbits of information and he provides a thorough bibliography.

According to Levy, Newman was an extremely private person (who didn't even give autographs to his legions of adoring fans) so apparently any bio that is released on the man will not contain information that was provided by Paul himself.

I knew he was very liberal but didn't realize just how liberal. According to the info in this book, he must have been to the left of Teddy Kennedy or John Kerry and that's liberal indeed. But it never showed in the movies he made and I guess that's what counts.

  • I have to cuss a little every time I read a news story about the big dogs filing suit against some little leaguer over a copyright violation. The hypocrisy involved is mind boggling.

Have y'all paid any attention to the studio credits shown on movies in the past few years? Seems like everybody in Hollyweird owns a piece of 'em., yet let some college student download one for his personal enjoyment and right away they start hollering copyright infringement. Anymore, it's almost impossible to pin down who really owns the rights to a film or song because it seems like everybody who's connected to the entertainment business does.
