Born Jan. 25, 1927, as Palmer Lee in San Francisco, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and became a cryptographer during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, Palmer held various jobs until 1950, when he was cast as an ambulance attendant in the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis film "My Friend Irma Goes West."
After a few bit parts in films, Palmer appeared in an episode of the syndicated Western TV series "Stories of the Century."
He went on to specialize in Westerns on screens both big and small. His films included "Son of Cochise," "Five Guns to Tombstone," "Rio Lobo," "The Shootist" and "The Virginian."
Palmer, who stood 6 feet four, played roles on a slew of TV Westerns, including "Wagon Train," "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza" and "Death Valley Days."
In a 2013 interview with The Examiner's Jeremy Roberts, Palmer attributed his acting success to preparation.
"From my experience," Palmer told the writer, "if you come prepared and do your best, you'll work. When you don't perform right, you're not called back."
