I know Dances With Wolves won a few including best picture. Unforgiven won at least one. Lonesome Dove also won some I think. Also, I think Silverado was nominated for best cinematography but I'm not sure about that one. That's all I've got off the top of my head Hondo.

Beau was a Tennesee Walker. And J.W did own him. I know this because my dad remembers when Dukes estate was sold and that old Beau was part of it.

He was a real good looking horse but I was always partial to that big appy in El Dorado. I think they called him Cochise.

Here's is another attempt at ressurecting OFF TOPIC.
Not much of an attempt really, but I would really like to find this movie. It is an Allan Ladd movie about a troop of lumberjacks who want to start cutting near a town that doesn't want them. The Female lead convinces Ladd (the forman) to ride with her. She takes him to a ghost town that had died out because of the logging industry. That is about all I remember. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can see that things in the off topic category are beginning to stagnate. So, in the spirit of ressurection I would very much like to here some fresh points of view on whether ol' Dukes' movies are or can possibly be construed as sexist and or demeaning to women.
Now before you all turn the page because the new guy is rehashing old news, please understand that this is not my intention. I was too late on the scene to participate in the Shootisters forum, and that is probably just as well. Last night I read over the whole list of offerings. And, while there were some good points, the general mood of it was fairly negative. It seemed that pretty much everyone was offended by the initial offering and the rest of it gave the impression that the Shootister was trying to justify some things she said that were obviously over the line and unfounded.
Anyway, that is just an outsiders view. I do not want to re-open old sores, nor do I want this to be a platform for feminism. You see, this particular subject came up the other day at work and I would like to hear your thoughts.
All I ask is that you simply respond to my opening question. Nobody has to start off in a defensive posture.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hondo,

very nice. I was expecting action scenes, but I suppose that's just the first thing that jumps into my head. Your choice shows some thought.

This one should get you all thinking. I just want one or two of your favorites. Have fun with it.
I guess mine is from the Horse Soldiers. The scene where John climbs onto that big sorrel and blows that bridge right behind him just before the Rebs close in.

Guy on the left, 'I wish I knew how to play chess. Or is this checkers?' "Uh, Duke? What colour am I Again?"

    Or

Stricken with indecision, guy on left swipes the board; trying to disguise his clever maneuver with a sneeze.

I forgot to put one in from yesteryear, so i will put two. Ben Johnson. Even though he was often a supporting actor he was great. Another good actor was Alan Ladd.

I am knew to this site, but not to western movies. I agree with all of you that John Wayne is easily the best. However, Sam Elliott is as close as anyone. He, Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are all great. I think they are so authentic and believable that any modern western with one of them in it is going to be good. And put Tom Selleck in there too.
