I thought the blood looked too fake when Wil was dying.

Duke didn't like all the blood and guts being shown in recent movies in the late sixties and early seventies. Maybe he didn't want to be all bloodied up. And effects back then didn't come close to what we have in films today.

It's unfortunate, but the blood often looked too bright in old films like the Hammer horror movies.
I understand he had major problems with the violence in "Big Jake".
