  • Last night, my Cat Shasta and I watched: -- Finally!!! Flags of our Fathers. I thought all the actors did an unbeatable job of acting as well as is usual-Clint Eastwood being the Director made this one of few new movies that I can add to my list off all-time favorites.

The pretty actress who played the woman who married one of the Flag-Raisers, looked familiar to me and then it dawned on me that she was the Actress who played the nosey downstairs neighbor of Charlie Sheen in the TV series: Two & a Half Men. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Robert Patrick in the move as a higher-ranking Marine Officer. I also like Adam Beach as well, and he gave one heck of a fine performance playing the role of Ira Hayes.

It sure was a sad thing to hear what happened to the three survivors after the war. Ira Hayes being found dead from exposure another flag-raiser who had ben promised XX amount of good jobs after the war-spent his life being a Janitor. I guess Americans have always had short memories-when it comes to our Nations Heroes :(

Harlon Bloch (SP?) John Bradley, Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, Frank? Sousley, and Jim Strank.

  • Ringo,
Thanks for the review, Flags of our Fathers is a movie we have wanted to see for quite awhile, its sometimes hard to remember a specific movie when you're standing in the video store. This reminder will help.

You mentioned Ira Hayes, which reminded me of that old country and western song The Ballad of Ira Hayes sung by Johnny Cash, and others. The chorus of that song is indelibly burned into my brain,

    Call him drunken Ira Hayes
    He won't answer anymore
    Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

    Here's a YouTube of Johnny

  • For the past couple of days, I've been watching Season 1 of the TV series "24". I don't know if y'all are familiar with this show but it's about Jack Bauer, a federal agent who's nominally in charge of a counter-terrorism unit called CTU. Keifer Sutherland stars as Agent Bauer. (About a month ago I bought the first six seasons from an ebay seller for a very good price.)

In Season 1 Jack is trying to foil the assassination of one David Palmer, a charismatic black senator who's on the verge of winning the U.S. presidency. While watching this show, I'm thinking to myself "did millions of Americans watch this and decide it's about time a black man was elected president?" because the guy plays an extremely believable candidate for the office. He's intelligent, an eloquent speaker, relatively handsome and very masculine (frankly, the character reminded me of a black John Wayne).

In short, this first season of "24", which aired in 2001, seems oddly prophetic of last year's actual presidential campaign, (except for the assassination plot, of course).

  • Today was the DVD release date of "Quantum of Solace", the latest Bond flick. Glad I didn't pre-order it because I was sorely disappointed. Way too frenetic for my taste.

There used to be a phrase "can you top this?" (I forget in what context it became so popular) but in "Quantum of Solace" that phrase came to mind repeatedly because it seemed as if the director tried to have Craig (Bond) top the chases after the bad guys, etc, that he did in his first Bond movie. It became old right quick. There was hardly any character or plot development at all.

I really liked Dan Craig as Bond in "Casino Royale" but I imagine his popularity in that role will take a big hit in this latest film.

  • If you look at the latest Bond movie as a continuation of Casino Royale then you can see what the director was trying to accomplish. It doesn't do well as a stand alone movie but together I think they are great. Watch them one right after another and see what you think.

Life is hard, its even harder when your stupid!!

  • We're just not gonna be on the same page on this, Todd. Compared to "Casino Royale", I thought "Quantum of Solace" stunk.

Not a problem. That was just my opinion.

I do think that the next one will be quite good as the background has been setup for how Bond became Bond.

  • For the past several days (and nights), I've been watching episodes of the TV series "24".

"24" episodes are extremely disjointed, and therefore aggravating, as they constantly jump from one character and plot situation to another. (thank goodness for the fast-forward feature on my remote ) But they're also addictive, as you get caught up in the stories about the efforts of Agent Jack Bauer and his CTU cohorts to foil the plots concocted by various terror groups.

For the past few nights, I've fallen asleep on my living room couch around midnight or later while watching the exciting series. I give a little cheer each time Jack blows away one of the bad guys.

You're familiar with the old maxim that cats have nine lives - well, Jack has more than that.

    De gustibus non est disputandum

  • "Honky Tonk Man", "every which way but loose" and "anyway whichway you can" Clint Eastwood movies

  • Watched "The Haunting" (1963) last night.....in the dark......still one of the scariest most suspense filled movies I've ever seen.
