  • You may not want to talk about this, Todd, and if you don't, I understand and won't press the issue. But I was wondering, did your wife's cousin live out in a semi-rural area like you do? If so, I guess that just goes to show that we're not safe anywhere anymore because murders are an unusual event out in the boonies. Or at least I thought they were.

Well she was actually killed in a town that has roughly 110,000 people in it. But the surrounding area is rural. My wife and I both work there but we live in a town of 3500 people about 20 minutes away. It is a sad thing when somethign like this happens. I guess its in what they call a "cold case" now that it has been so long since it happened.

  • I'm beginning to understand why this country had a Civil War. One reason is that we good old Southern boys just can't communicate with those damned Yankees. :stunned:

Today I went to the video store to see what was in this week's batch of new releases. One was entitled "Gone Baby Gone", a movie about which I had read some good reviews.
Kinda sorry I wasted my money.

The movie was set in Bahstun, Mass and I had one heck of a time trying to understand the dialogue, which was pure Bahstunese. Do those people really talk like that? Even worse, of the parts I could understand, about every third word was the F-bomb. Well, as I've said before in this forum, I'm not a big fan of movies that rely on dirty language as a selling point.

The plot revolves around the abduction of a 4-year-old girl from her extremely poor excuse of a crankhead mother and the effort to recover her before it's too late. Quite frankly, after seeing the seamier side of Bahstun society (and believe me, it's verrrrry seamy), I can understand why the Nazis instituted a program to sterilize undesirables in their population. Might not be a bad idea in this country. :vomit:

  • One thing I forgot to add about "Gone Baby Gone". It was a Buena Vista production, for God's sake. A subsidiary of the Disney Company. Old Walt must be turning over in his grave to see some of the crap his ancestral company is turning out.

I couldn't agree more with these sentiments, I find movies with excessive swearing a complete turn off. I have noticed on comedy programmes that have a studio audience, every time the "f" word is said the audience explode into laughter. I really do think that the people who find this funny are the absolute lowest common denominator.

Exactly, Rob. By laughing they're encouraging more use of such language, which only contributes to the further coarsening of our culture. As if it could get any more coarse. This modern, "cool" world has absolutely no class at all.

As someone who spent 25 years in the military, I'm certainly no stranger to profanity. During that time, I probably heard every obscenity ever invented and sometimes used a few myself. I'm definitely no prude. But I sure don't remember any of us who used it with the same degree of casualness as shown by too many people today. And I would have washed out my own mouth with soap before using such language around women and kids. I have no objections to the occasional "damn" or "hell" or even a few stronger phrases but when almost every sentence in a movie dialogue is laced with one "F" after another, I get pretty disgusted.

Last year "The Departed" won the Oscar for best movie. Based on all the rave reviews (which seems to be par for the course nowadays - the more sex and dirty language there is in a movie, the more the critics (and lowlifes) like it), I rented the disc to watch. Well, after about 10 minutes of one "F" after another, I turned the film off and took it back to the video store.

This world we live in is going to hell in a handbasket....with a downhill drag.

" its not all black and white, but different shades of grey"

  • Hey Todd, didja see the news?

I can hardly wait to see Mitch start kickin' terrorist butt.

That is awesome!!! Good to see a local boy(for me atleast) get his due.

I too look forward to seeing these movies.

  • During the run-up to the Oscars this year, all the buzz was about "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood". As we know, "No Country" won Best Picture (though I don't know why).

Did anyone see the other, and was it any good? It's coming out on disc next week and if it's a pretty good movie, I'll rent it.

  • Personally, if it's not a comic book adaptation, I will generally not bother with it. Exceptions to the rule are as follows

    Narnia
    Pixar
    Indiana Jones
    Schwarzenegger

Not much else will get me to drag my sorry but to the theater. However I am looking forward to GI Joe.

  • I think he's do good in a western, I think.

I think so too. I don't know why but I just have a feeling he'd be a natural for a good Western. I never had that feeling about any of the other guys who played Bond, with the possible exception of Tim Dalton.

He's got the makings of a mega movie [star] provided he doesn't goof up.

I wholeheartedly agree. I haven't felt this excited about a movie star in a long, long time.

Now watch....after winning my movie loyalty in "Casino Royale", he'll fall flat on his face in the new one.

    De gustibus non est disputandum

  • Hi

As the article said when they were making Casino Royale our newspapers had a field day saying that he was useless at stunts got knocked about and was scared to attempt anything. They also took the mick when he came out of the water in those light blue trunks but when the film proved to be so popular and the critics saw he could act they changed their minds.

Craig has said that he intend to stay as Bond for as long as his bones hold out and they can provide stories for him.

Incidentaly they are saying that the film has an opening sequence that lasts for half an hour before the screen credits begin to role.

    Regards

    Arthur

  • I have always been a Bond aficionado from "Dr. No" onward. I certainly liked "Casino Royale" and look forward to Daniel Craig continuing on in the series.

  • He was laughed at, criticized and scorned, but pulled it off,
    and looked credible!
    Good luck to him

Imo, he looked much more than credible, Keith. Far as I'm concerned, he was the most believable 007 yet. Let's face it, trained assassins are supposed to look and act like assassins, meaning they're supposed to be extremely ruthless and without mercy toward their opponents. Dan was exactly that. Much more so than the others, with the possible exception of Dalton. The others, even inluding Connery, have always acted like they're more interested in bedding the ladies than eliminating their enemies.
