  • is this college american football? do they go up to the NFL afterwards if they are good enough?also that sounds very unfair playing in Texas every year.you would have thought they played home + away alternating every year. seems strange to me

Yes, in talking about OU-Texas football, it's American-style, not soccer.

And yes again - most of the better college players go on to the NFL.

Thanks for clearing that up Stumpy and we play football not " soccer " regardless of what that idiot Beckham says

  • Does anyone else think we need a playoff system in college ball?

Absolutely. The lesser conferences who never play the quality of teams may still have a team capable of winning it all. If they play enough good teams the lesser team will be weeded out of the mix. The old saying the creme will rise to the top.
The teams like USC for example only play a few tought games so their players are less beat up by bowl time. The SEC teams by then have thoroughly beat the crap out of each other and limp into the bowl season.

  • The thing that bothers me most about the OU-Texas rivalry is that for almost a century, the game has been played in Dallas which, as you know, is in Texas. They call it "neutral" territory because it's about equidistant between the two college campuses. Neutral, my butt. IMO, you can't have a "neutral" game site if it's played in the same state each and every year. Especially if that state is Texas.

Hey, did y'all see that "neutral" state flag flying outside the stadium? And hear the announcements about the "Neutral" State Fair.:wink_smile: Neutral, my fanny.

I'm very close to turning off the TV and going for a nap. One of the aspects of capitalism that irritates me the most is the rampant commercialism that permeates every single television program, especially sports. My gosh, it's just one stinkin' commercial right after the other. So much so that I don't even enjoy watching OU games anymore. And you'd better believe that when I won't watch OU play football, something is seriously wrong.

  • England won 5-1 today in their World Cup qualifier.
I know it's not American football but it's still football to me.
Apologies Stumpy for posting on your American football debate.

No, in all seriousness, I've found that as I've aged, the game of football, even OU football, is not nearly as important to me as it once was. 30 or 40 years ago, I'd probably have slit my wrists if OU had been knocked from its' #1 perch by the despised Longhorns but now, I just say to myself, "So what - life goes on - it's only a game".

OU played lousy defense today and probably deserved to lose.

BTW, Ned, this is not my football debate, it's our football thread.

For many years, I've written the athletic department at OU urging them to go to a home-and-home schedule with Texas, playing on each school's home field in alternating years. But the poohbahs in Dallas have made it so profitable for both schools to continue playing there that OU refuses to change the current arrangement.

Stumpy, I feel your pain about that neutral site. The Georgia/Florida rivaly also happens to be on a neutral site....IN JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA. And I also agree about there needs to be a playoff in college football. Last year I honestly felt we had the best team in the nation, but we didn't get a shot.

If I may shift gears here, did anybody catch the ending to the Atlanta/Chicago game today....man what an end to a great game. Matt Ryan seems like he will be a great QB.

    Stay thirsty my friends.

  • Stumpy,

I don't mean to get your dander up but there are still 2 unbeaten teams in Oklahoma; although I thought the Cowboys were, in classic style, going to give it away in the last 1:50 of the game with that stupid run the clock out idea.

Yeah it worked but I don't like to win running backwards.

And GT for what it's worth I was rooting for the Dawgs against Bama. I had hopes the black shirts would make the difference.

You don't get my dander up, T-Bone. Like I said, the fortunes of OU football are far less important to me at 70 than they were when I was 30 or 40. As I've aged, I've realized that there are many things more important than football. Like my wife, my kids and grandkids, the lives of our boys overseas fighting for us, etc.

I'd give almost anything to see OSU beat the Horns though. Also Mizzou.

There were a lot of upsets and last minute game-changing scores in both professional and college games this weekend.

  • Did anyone see the end of the Rams/Cards game?

I have a personal pet peeve about these coaches calling a quick time out just before the ball is snapped so they can ice the kicker.

I thought it was poetic justice that when the Cardinal coach pulled that on the Rams kicker, whose first kick was blocked if I recall, the resulting second kick made the winning goal.

  • With Mizzou, Okie St, and Texas Tech, one of them should knock them off.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I just have never liked the University of Texas or its' football team. To me, UT and/or its' students personify all that is objectionable about stereotypical Texans - braggarts, loud-mouthed, obnoxious and overbearing. And this opinion is from someone born in Texas.

I have nothing against Texas A&M or any of the other big schools in the state, only UT.

Oh, I forgot to mention this - UT is located in Austin, which is to Texas as San Francisco is to California - very, very liberal.

  • I visited UT at Austin in 1999. My Wife's family is in Fredericksburg and we drove all over while we visited. Loved San Antonio.

Most schools have the braggarts. Tennessee, Georgia, Bama all do I know I met many from there. When I saw UTenn at Syracuse this old Syracuse alum said to me you are a cocky SOB. He had just said to me with 1:34 seconds left and Syracuse winning that we would lose, I said I had been to many games and they had not lost one yet. We won with less than .20 left.

Penn State is about as bad as any place. One of their alums didn't like that UTenn beat them one year and while I was off from work stole my 75th anniversary UTenn cup for spite.

The Texas hill country is nice. As for San Antone, it ranks among my top three favorite U.S. cities, and I've been to most of 'em.
