  • I think just for the heck of it, I'll compile my own list of the top 100 movies of all time. Will take awhile because I want to give serious consideration to the hundreds of films I've seen during my lifetime but I can already say that my list will omit many of the films on the AFI list.

    De gustibus non est disputandum

  • As a rabid movie fan since about the age of 10, I can truthfully say that during my 70 years, I’ve seen hundreds of films that I thought were wonderful. In my collection of about 800 DVDs, I have almost without exception every one of my all-time favorite movies. Some are of better quality than others, since I had to record the discs from taped copies in a few instances. I hope someday to have all my favorites in commercially-remastered copies.

It’s very hard to pare down my list of favorites to just 100 but the following titles are pretty accurate. But since I’ve seen so many movies that I thought were great, only about the first ten on the list are ranked in their proper order of personal esteem. The rest are listed alphabetically. (Unfortunately, I had to omit at least 80 other titles that I really like in order to stay within the 100 limit.)

  • I also like Stumpy's list. Wish he'd list those other 80 films he had to omit to get his list down to 100 though. Bet I'd like that list too!

  • Like all lists and surveys what you get on the final list depends on who you ask, what you ask and how many you ask.

If they did a survey of Top 100 movies here you would get a high percentage of John Wayne movies on the list. If as most of these top ten lists do you ask a lot of "film critics" who know zilch. Guess what you get the obscure, arty, trendy films that always appear on every list.

    Mike

  • You must have been outvoted, Bill, because there's a bunch of films on that AFI list that I find it very hard to believe that you would vote for.
