  • Sir Alexadner Stephenson: Just got the letter in the mail that had the 150th Anniversary Eureka Stockade Coin in it. I love the coin and will add it to my Coin Collection. I would like some more Info. on this time in your History. Was this like the 49 Gold Rush in California in the 1800s? I also liked your Note to me, you write very well! The Face of Elizabeth II on the coin is great and I still can remember when she became Queen when I was young, and we saw it on the News Reals at the Fox Theater when we went to see a John Wayne film, this was way before we had a T.V. set!!!:cowboy: Chilibill

Smokey; With a "Young Bloke" like this for a Son you will not have anything to worry about in years to come in "Down Under", He has a lot of Class!

  • Hi William

If you get a chance go and have a look at the British 1949 film The Eureka Stockade Chips Rafferty was in it as well as a very young Peter Finch. It is a British Australian film and I think sticks pretty much to the events leading up to and including the British attack on the stockade.

  • hi chill

glad you liked tha coin the little bloke picked it himself. this time in our history was very similar to the gold rushes of america, the uprising was over digging licences and the government of the time kept rising the price of them and the diggers decided that they had had enough and that is how it started. this happen in victoria in the town of ballarat, like arthur said if you watch the chips rafferty movie it sticks pretty much to the facts even down to the last shot out. if i remember rightly they said that the price of the ticket was going up because of the bushrangers that kept holding up the gold wagons and therefore it wasn't getting into the governments coffers not only did they raise the price of the ticket they also raised the price of the food at the diggings by charging more for transportation so a lot of different things combined to make this happen.

i thankyou for the complement and i think he will make a lovely young man when he grows up if he continues down this way. he thinks the world of you and your book is his most treasured item he likes to try many things from the book at least once and he has found some favourites.

will find out more for you about ballarat for you

    cheers smokey

Just between you and me, Arthur, I wish Great Britain still owned half the world but with either Winnie or Maggie at the helm. :D

  • Interesting Sentiment Stumpy, over here most people hate Margret Thatcher and even the conservative party distances itself from her durring electing campaigns.

Smokey I don't mind old Rolf too much he was on TV this morning and made a reference to John Wayne but I didn't catch what is was about.

Regarding Home and Away and Neighbours over here they don't stand up well against our soaps which are a lot more grittier mainly Eastenders. At most aussie soaps gets a one million audience compared to 15 million for Coronation Street and a lot of people over here do believe that Neighbours is quite silly but its also harmless, I dont watch it anymore but I habe been informed that its went sex mad.

Most Europeans, including Brits, are much farther left than I am, Robbie.

  • Extreme far left are communists. Extreme far right are Nazis. Most Europeans are socialists, most of which aren't as far left as communists. Nor am I as far right as a Nazi. But I don't like socialism at all.

    De gustibus non est disputandum

  • Stumpy; You got that right. Most people that do not live in the wide open spaces and in the big citys do not even understand what you are talking about when you say far left and far right. Out here where I live you take care of yourself and do what you want as long as you do not bother any of the people that live around you. Thats what I call the Right.

The people that live in all of the Big Citys on the East and West Coast and want the "Washington" to take of all their needs are the Left. All you have to do is look at the Red and Blue map of the last Election and it will show you where the people on the Left and the Right live in the U.S.A. For most of them that live in these areas on the East and West Coast, they have never lived any other way, so it is not their fault. Thank God I live in the Wide open Spaces and do what I want when I want and call myself on the "Right but not far Right!!!" Chilibill :cowboy:

Amen, Bill. My philosophy has always been that government should help only those who are too old, too young or too crippled to work. Everyone else should take care of themselves.

Those blue staters and the Europeans think there's a government solution to every problem but remember what Ronnie Reagan said, "Government is the problem" and I sure agree with that. All I want from the government is for them to leave me alone.

  • hi robbie

we don't get those programmes over here but we do get "the bill" it has a large following over here. as i said earlier i don't know what neighbours is like as it is on when we have dinner and the telly is off.

chill the miners are the good guys to some extent and the coppers some only did as they were told while others took pleasure in doing it, if you look at it the whole issue is a complex one but this is where they say that the aussie spirit was born.

  • Hi Stumpy and Chillibill

At one time John Wayne was described or considered as being slightly to the right of Ghengis Khan.

With regard to our politicians I wouldn't give you tuppence for the lot of them.

Well, Arthur, I'm slightly to the right of the Duke,

Actually, I call myself a Libertarian. They believe in minimum government involvement in the lives of citizens. I'm a strong individualist and reject any hint of collectivism.

As for your politicians, about the only current one with whom I'm familiar is Mr. Blair and because of his steadfast backing of Bush, I like Tony, even if he is the leader of the Labour Party.

I feel toward almost all American politicians, of any party, the same way you feel toward British politicians. Far as I'm concerned, there ain't any of 'em worth the powder it'd take to blow 'em to hell.
