  • :cowboy: Hi Stumpy, thanks for the link and extra names. Yesterday was my first day of doing research for names. To sorta paraphrase John Paul Jones: He said: "I have not yet began to fight" I say: "I have not yet began to post."

    Best regards-TRK.

PS, I don't want just a list of names either. If he or she was a regular in western movies and TV shows, I need the name of the TV shows they were in.

  • :cowboy: Hello Rick, thank you for the extra information. I will try to add those names today before the library closes. If not I will next be online Monday the 27th.

I have tons of things i'd like to add to this list that I will be doing in the coming days/weeks. I have not yet found another site on the net that has such a list as this will be. I hope the Admin here does not mind me doing this? I probably should have asked first?

    Best regards-TRK.

  • Ringo,

By chance how many western stars do you have listed, and what is the criteria for making that list? I know that you have some stars who make the transition, but if you really think about it, almost every one in show business has been a western star. Realize I said almost. Think about it; I could say Sharon Stone, and some might argue that she wasn't in a western, but she starred in The Quick & the Dead, or even Michael J, Fox in Back to the Future, Part 3, which goes in time to the old west. Just interesting in how this works.

  • Hi Ringo

    Taking Hondo's point,

    You can add

    Humphrey Bogart
James Cagney (Both in the Oklahoma Kid one of the worst westerns ever made)

Spencer Tracy (shouldn't be considered a fringe player as he starred in many westerns in his own right)

    Ray Milland
    Charles Bickford
    John Hodiak
    Barry Sullivan

Raymond Burr (the villain in a number of his early westerns).

    I'll continue thinking

    Regards

  • :cowboy: Hello Hondo, Arthur.

Hondo, good question and I had been thinking of criteria of sorts. What I was thinking of was only naming those who have been in no less than 4 western movies and or no less than two movies as well as at least four guest star roles on western TV series.

I will be going through the list to weed out those who did not make the minimum movies number. Also, as this gathers steam, I will take names off the movies list to those who might have only been in western TV series and that that could be a section all its own.

As for Sharon Stone and Michael J. Fox, I like them both as actors but, I don't think either can qualify. Also, I have been excluding time travel type movies and such.

Also, I have been working on a comprehensive list of every Western TV show that ran on regular TV. There is one if i'm not mistaken, that has been a series of sorts that is or has been running on HBO--i'm not counting it either. Also, I did not count Briscoe County? and Dallas either.

Now, for someone who only acted in a western Tv series--such as Little House On The Prarie, they will only be listed in the Western TV section.

I was contemplating adding people like The Three Stooges as they did do a few western movies as well as many two reelers. Buster Keaton was in The General, and hopefully in enough others that he can qualify.

Another thing I was thinking of that will reduce the movies list a bit is, that if an actor was more known for doing western Tv shows, that that is where their name will be--but only if they did not make at least 4 movies. Some other actors like Ken Barry from F Troop, he will only be listed in the Tv section.

Arthur, thank you for your list too. I do have several of the names you listed--not yet posted but, you do have many I did not know of and will add them too. I was working on the list last night and I have about 80 more names to add to the list but some of them will later be placed in the TV westerns section because I have not been able to check if they made more than 1-2 movies.

I too noticed a lack of female names and can use all I can get. I have several on my list that I have not posted yet. Ladies like Barbara Stanwyck, olivia de Havilland etc.

There are several names I have not been able to check yet like Claude Akins for example, that I need to check. hopefully Monday I can start doing some names checking.

I thrive on doing this kind of research. :)

    Best regards--Carl.

  • Carl,

Claude Akins was with Duke in Rio Bravo as Joe Burdette. The man in jail in the majority of the movie. He was also in Ride Beyond Vengeance (1966), Gunfight at Black Horse Canyon (1961) (TV), Comanche Station (1960), Return of the Seven (1966), A Distant Trumpet (1964) and more. I know him best as Sheriff Lobo in the BJ & the Bear television series in the late '70's.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Ringo and Hondo

The trouble the brits have with American TV westerns is just, that is what they are - American TV westerns. The majority of them never see the light of day over here and thus any contribution regarding stars, plots etc is impossible.

Currently and for the past ten years British TV is crammed with Hospital shows like holby City and Casualty and Murder Mystery shows like the Bill, Taggart and whatever book Lynda La Plant has just finished plus soaps like Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale with the odd Australian ones thrown in for good measure.

The TV western as far as British television is concerned, as a genre finished years ago with Maverick.

Its a great pity because seeing your lists and reading Wildest Westerns some of them looked quite good,

BBC2 will air a lot of old films and John ayne gets a good and regular airing but that is about it.

    Regards

  • Arthur,

I guess you'll have to pack up and come over here to see those westerns. ;)

But they are not currently the genre on American TV. You'll have to see them on reruns. Every once in a while they will do a series, but I think that Little House on the Prairie (that was over 20 years ago) was the last series on TV in the states. Might be wrong, but that's what I think.

  • :cowboy: Greetings Hondo/Arthur.

Hondo sorry I forgot to answer part of your question yesterday. So far on the list I think there are about 200 names.

Also, thank you for confirming Claude Akins for me. I think he was a very good actor and he deserves to be on the list. I too best remember him as Sheriff Lobo, oh and when he was on Movin' On. That was a series about Truck Drivers. I don't remember anything about it except that we watched that show when I was about 6 or 7.

Arthur, no problem on that, I completely understand. Where I am at, all I can get are some episodes from the last seasons of Gunsmoke--which rarely had James Arness in them. We no longer get Wagon Train, Rawhide, The Rifleman, Bonanza and the like.

Sadly, the TV western seems to be just about finished here as well. The last series I heard of I think was played on HBO, made by HBO, and I THINK was in 2002? Not sure. Some of the series were excellent that is for sure.

Wait till I can get more info posted starting Monday Jan 3rd.

I have what I think is a near complete listing minus less than 10 series for various reasons. I came up with at least 114 different Western TV shows played here during the years. I did not bother with the 2-3 western T series that had less than 3-4 episodes or lasted 3 weeks or less on TV. Those weren't worth it.

Anyway, I will begin to list those 114 Western TV series starting Monday. I will have appx dates they were showed on TV as well as the full cast and characters names. They will also be in alphabetical order as well.

And possible news for "ITDO" is that the man who said that in The Alamo, apparently was in a shoet-lived western TV series.

Oh and, there is one exception to the rule of a sort of time travel western TV series. This one is called Outlaws. You will see what I mean when I get it posted. ;)

Of the few I did not have as part of the list are those who were actually mini-series and not meant to be a long ran show. I left out Lonesome Dove and its sequal for that reason only. Also, I did not add North & South Books 1-2 and 3, because of their status as Mini Series. The Blue & The Gray was left out as well.

Anyway, on Monday--I will be starting the TV series list under the names in the first posting. Hope you all will like reading them and I bet for some it will be some long forgotten series that they will remember.

    TRK.
