  • I thought this "What If" would be interesting to see who you all would chose to make the all time perfect cast for a Western movie.

This movie would be one of those story epics that covered our history from the time of the expansion out West a few years before The Alamo to the Indian Wars out West.

The parts of the scouts/pioneers would go to:

    John Dierkes.

The roles for those who would be in the Civil War and Indain Wars scenes would go to the rest of those not listed here with the exception of those who would be some of the Cowboys and (for reason of sanity) and time.

    The Cowboys:

    Gary Cooper.

  • Hi Carl,
    Great list, and so expansive!!
I would find it difficult to leave anyone out!!
So what I suggest, is this:-

Duke is the star, and all the rest can have cameo roles!!
Yak and Chuck, can double up as everyone,
and Uncle Jack can direct with,
Hawks,Hathaway and McLaglen, as 2nd unit assistants!
Dollar can be the star horse, with Banner and Bo, doubling up as all the other horses!!

    How about that then???

    Best Wishes,my friend,

  • hi ringo

what about tom sellec and tom burlingson they both look great in cowboy duds

    hooroo smokey

" its not all black and white, but different shades of grey"

  • Hi Mate, your idea sounds good but I would absolutely have to have Lewis Milestone be the director for the War with Mexico & the Civil War battle scenes. :D

    Take care mate--Carl.

Es Ist Verboten Mit Gefangenen In Einzelhaft Zu Sprechen..

  • Hi Smokey my dear, I did think of having Tom Selleck in the list but, I decided against him in my list because he is too modern of an actor to be with these folks. I am a big Selleck fan and have liked him ever since his Magnun P.I. days. You are correct though, he does make for a VERY good Western star. I had also thought of having Mel Gibson and Tom Hanks as well. :D

    Take care my dear--Carl.

Es Ist Verboten Mit Gefangenen In Einzelhaft Zu Sprechen..

  • I just watched Russell Crowe in the Silver Brumby/ Stallion this afternoon. He looks alwful good on a horse also. He raises cattle in real life and is quite a horseman. He's also a great actor.

  • Didn't see him on the list, but I just don't see that Robert Duvall can be left off it....True Grit, Lonesome Dove, Open Range....great character cowboy. Glad to see Ben Johnson made the list....one of the unsung in my opinion, and could he ever ride a horse......Grant

  • Hi gr1087, Keith.

1087, Duvall is a good actor and I had forgotten about him. I think he'd probably make good in the role of a Lawman of somekind.

Keith, Thanks for that. I had completely forgotten about Tyrone Power. He would definately have to be in one of the military scenes and most likely in the War with Mexico scenes.

I'm sure there are tons more I did not name but thats only because these names above were all I could think of at the moment. :D

Es Ist Verboten Mit Gefangenen In Einzelhaft Zu Sprechen..

  • Okay Carl,
I'm taking you up on your challenge, but it is pretty difficult to do so I have decided to limit myself some what. I picked a year (1960), and decided to have all the actors and actresses and what not active during that time. Now I only have a list of about a hundred people, so I am paring it down some more by trying to think of roles for them in the "Best Western Movie Ever". I've been working on this since you started this post back on the 12th. Hopefully I will have it done in the next day or so and will get it posted.
By the way, this idea of yours is great! I haven't had this much fun in a long time. I am in training at work this week, so I take my list to work with me to work on it during lunch, and one of my buddy's, Jess (the Colorado Ranger here at the forum), has been offering his suggestions as well, so the result will not be all my creation. I am looking forward to how this thing turns out.
    Best,
    Colorado Bob

"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them" It may be time worn, but it's the best life-creed I know.

  • Thank you Col,orado, i'll be eagerly awaiting your finished product. Perhaps I should give a certain role to every individual as well.

I don't want this to be a copy of How the West Was Won though. BTW, that movie has some ffrom our list including The Duke.

    James Stewart.
    Gregory Peck.
Karl Malden (who I forgot to mention)
    Walter brennan.
    The Duke (Of course) ;-))
Lee J. Cobb (who is also not on the list but would have been had I remembered his name)
    Henry Fonda.
    Andy Devine.
    Richard Widmark.
Raymond Massey (who is not on the list but would have been if I had remembered his name.)

Others that i'd list would also include:

    Stuart Whitman.
    Robert Wagner.
    Caesar Romero.
    Mel Ferrer.
    Jack Warden.
Chill Wills. (How could I have left out Chill Wills?)
    Edgar Buchannen.
    Kirk Douglas.
    Slim Pickens.
Frank Sinatra. (How could I have left him off this list too?)
Christopher George. (Would make a good Cavalry Sergeant.)
    Tom Mix.
    Tim Holt.
    Tim McCoy.
    George "Gabby" Hayes.
    Al St John.
    Johnny Mack Brown.
    Lash LaRue.
    Charles Starrette.
    Wild Bill Elliott.
    Raymond Hatton.
    Brian Donlevy.
    Robert Preston.
    J. Carroll Naish. ( General Sheridan.)
J.C. Flippen. ( Confedeate Cavalry Sergeant Major.)
    James Arness.
Ken Curtis. (US Officer in the War With Mexico.)
    Glenn Corbett.
Jack Elam. (How could I not remember his name?)
Roscoe Lee Browne. (Good actor and Tuskegee Airman/Hero)
    Rod Taylor.
    Neville Brand.
    Ralph Meeker.
    Hugh O'Brian. (Saloon keeper/Gambler.)

  • Okay folks, here it is. I told Carl that I was taking him up on his challenge, and after much thought, and after imposing the limitation on myself of picking a year and using only actors and actresses that were alive and capable of making films at that time, I have chosen the year 1960. So here, is my version of the greatest western film of all time, from the year 1960. Let me know what you all think. (Bear in mind that there are several notable omissions, such as John Qualen, John Ireland, Arthur Kennedy and many others that I would have included if I could have thought of names and occupations for them - Colorado Bob).

I'll have to take the weekend to work on completing mine.

    Take care and best regards--Carl.

  • Bob,

Your list is a good one. I only have one name I'd like to add to it (but it's a big one). Remember, in 1960 Gary Cooper was still around. I don't think that any "ideal Western cast" would be complete without him. Someday (when I have more time) I will type up a longer post about Cooper and his contributions to the Western genre. But, I definitely would have Wayne and Cooper as the stars of my "Perfect Western."
