Loved this film. It is one of my all time favorite John Wayne films. I watched it again yesterday. My favorite quote is from when JW was stopping the hanging near the beginning of the movie. After the Scotsman (played by the great character actor Bernard Fox) and the little boy leave, Big Jake warns the lynch mob: "You follow him, and I will hunt you down and kill you, every mother-son of you." To me, this sets the tone for the rest of the movie. No quarter given to bad guys. So it was not a surprise when the box had newspaper clippings. Plus, you could see it in the Duke's eyes when he first opens the box in front of Maureen O'Hara. Neither was going to pay for the grief the kidnappers had caused.
I hope this post makes sense.

It makes perfect sense. Great movie, and great to see several Duke offsprings in the film.

Howdy Duke fans...I'm looking forward to meeting both Patrick Wayne and Christopher Mitchum at the Memphis Film Festival next month!

Does anyone know why Christopher Mitchum did not appear in any notable films after "Big Jake"?
-
Allegedly he was more or less blackballed by liberal Hollywood for his appearances and friendship with conservative John Wayne.
-
I also heard he got crossways with Duke after this film but I can’t recall the details of it.

Apparently he disagreed with Duke in an interview, and never saw him again.
I wondered why he did not appear in any other notable films afterwards, apart from a tiny bit role in "Tombstone".

Chris Mitchum said in an interview that after appearing with Duke in several movies he stopped getting phone calls for jobs. He took that as being blacklisted from liberal Hollywood.
He did keep working over the years but never in anything notable. It’s not unusual for children of actors, artists of whatever persuasion to not have the success of their parents…either due to less talent…the idea of simply because of their last name…professional jealousies…lots of reasons. For every one that succeeds there’s probably dozens that don’t. The name might get you in the door but if you don’t have the drive or talent to sustain a career you’ll be left by the wayside.

There is several clips of Mitchum's interview on youtube; here is the one with him talking about being blacklisted

They couldn't cancel Duke, so they picked on the little guys who worked with Duke. Wow.
