Taste is subjective, ST. I've made very plain that John Wayne was my favorite person in the entire history of the motion picture industry. And he made many movies I loved (includng "The Quiet Man"). I just didn't think his acting skills were outstanding. Adequate, yes, but not superior.
As far as pure acting ability goes, my personal favorite among male actors is Paul Newman. I think Newman should have won at least seven or eight Oscars but as we know, he only won for "The Color of Money", certainly not one of his better efforts, IMO. In fact, I don't even think it comes close to "The Hustler", its' prequel.
And those are just my opinions.
