For American-style football, Dan was one of the greatest quarterbacks who ever played the game. (the quarterback is usually considered the team's leader and is one of the team's main ball handlers)

  • I could hardly believe that Ingram's Heisman was the first for 'Bama after all the great teams Bear turned out.

Jim, there is a story behind this. During Bear Bryant's day, he kept his players from that award. Back then, coaches had better control of their players and the media, and Bear had that in his back pocket. He wouldn't make it in college football today. None of those coaches would.

Think about it, that team had a lot of great players, and they were never considered for the Heisman. The only player who was in the finals of the award was about 15 years ago. The name escapes me for the moment, but he finished third. Bear put stock in team players and not individuals.

  • How about those Titans! They lead 24-9 and tied to go into overtime with 24-24 tie, but in overtime Miami got the ball and fumbled, then the Titans scored with a field goal to win 27-24. They are 7-7. Let's see something special.

    Cheers

I don't know if it's my age or what but I've almost completely lost interest in the game.

Up until about 15 or maybe 20 years ago, I personified the word "football fan[atic']. I spent most weekends doing nothing but watching both college and pro ball. If my beloved Sooners or Cowboys lost, I was almost ready to slit my wrists. But it gradually lost its' appeal. In fact, shortly after Tom Landry left the Cowboys, my enthusiasm for the game cooled. I used to know almost every coach in both college 1-A and the pros but anymore, about the only team I make even a half-hearted effort to follow is Big Red (Sooners) and even with them, it's no longer that big a deal for me if they lose. Hell, it's only a game, I figure.

Another thing that chilled my ardor was all the stinkin' commercials and silly rules they've introduced into the game. Seems like nowadays, you spend more time watching commercials and flags being thrown than you do watching football.

  • My biggest complaint is the official's review. It takes away from the game. Even in high school football, no I'm not talking about the officials taking time to review the play to get it right, but when they put the championship game on TV, it was replayed and we saw the officials missing plays. I get caught up in it myself, and I hate it. It takes the human element out of the game. And takes too much time. Sorry but mistakes are a part of the game, so live with it. I'd say that 8 out of 10, the refs are right, but they take so much time reviewing it, and I quickly loose interest in the game. Let us complain, and enjoy the game.

Well four hours later after some excitement. the tigers came out with a victory 38-35 in overtime againt Northwestern. SEC beat the Big Ten. War Eagle!

  • They've carried this bowl business to absolutely ridiculous extremes.

35 or 40 years ago, I think there were only about 7 or 8 bowls total, with the Rose, Orange, Sugar, and Cotton Bowls topping the list, and then a few lower tier contests like the Gator, etc.

I remember when colleges played almost strictly for sports glory and bragging rights but anymore, it's all about money. Disgusting..............

  • Jim,

I checked into this and came up with a lot of interesting facts about the college bowl games played over the years. I found the research pretty interesting, and too much to list below, though you might find this a lot, it's only a small portion to a very crowded field over the years.

Here is a list of 33 bowls being played this year (not including the BCS championship game). It is the most bowls played ever in a single season. It does not include the all star games either.

Forty years ago, there were 15 bowl games on the schedule. 6 are now defunct bowls while nine were played then are played now today.

Listing of the current bowls played and their starting date (in the year only).
    1900-1970
    Rose Bowl - 1902, 1916
    Orange Bowl - 1935
    Sugar Bowl - 1935
    Sun Bowl - 1936
    Cotton Bowl - 1937
    Gator Bowl - 1946
    Capital One Bowl (Tangerine/Florida Citrus) - Tangerine 1947-1983, Florida Citrus 1984-2002, 2003-Present
    Liberty Bowl - 1959
    Chick-fli-a Bowl (Peach) - Peach 1968-1997, 1998-Present

    1971-1999
    Fiesta Bowl - 1971
    Independence Bowl - 1976
    Holiday Bowl - 1978
    Alamo Bowl - 1983
Outback Bowl (Hall of Fame) - Hall of Fame 1986-1996, 1997-Present
    Insight Bowl (Cooper) - Cooper 1989-1997, Insight.com 1998, 1999-Present
    Las Vegas Bowl - 1992
    Motor City Bowl - 1997
    Music City Bowl - 1998
    GMAC Bowl- 1999
    Humanitarian Bowl - 1997

    2000-Present
    Texas Bowl - 2000
Champs Sports Bowl - Tangerine 2001-2003, CarQuest, MicronPC, Champs Sports 2004-2009
    New Orleans Bowl - 2001
Meineke Car Care Bowl - 2002
    Emerald Bowl - 2002
    Hawaii Bowl - 2002
    Armed Forces Bowl - 2003
    Poinsettia Bowl - 2005
    New Mexico Bowl - 2006
    PapaJohn.com Bowl - 2006
    International Bowl - 2007
    St. Petersburg Bowl - 2008
    EagleBank Bowl - 2008

Two bowls are scheduled to begin at the end of the 2010 football season. The Yankee Bowl, played at Yankee Stadium; and the Dallas Football Classic, played at Cotton Bowl Stadium. Note that change in name may take place due to sponsorship.

There are a lot, no doubt, and I think a lot has been taken away from the game from this, but it is a way to see more football action and a fantastic possibility of seeing your team play. According to my research, back over 50 years ago, there was a possibility you could be rank in the top 20 and not play in a bowl game, but accordingly, the season was over in November, and the National Champion was announced and the bowl games were merely a reward or fun time to go out and play a game for the season you had.

It's did show a few times that the number 1 team didn't go to a bowl. Very interesting. I knew that already about the champion was determined from the regular season.

    Cheers  Hondo

  • What a bowl tonight. The GMAC Bowl was one of the better bowls this week. Central Michigan took it in double over time against Troy, 44-41. This one by far was one of the best games in this years bowls.

Tomorrow night is the championship game. I thinking it's Texas and hoping as well. It's hard enough living with these people during football season, but they will take it 365 days, and they already announced their championship for 2010. They do that.

    Hook 'em horns!

  • Rough loss for Texas last night. That true freshman QB is going to be something else though.

Might have been a different story if they hadn't thrown the ball away first half and if they could get an honest roughing the passer call from that side judge.

See what happens when your starting QB gets hurt right away. You know, like Sam was at the beginning of this season. Texas was lucky - McCoy didn't get hurt until the very last game.

  • Well Dallas and the New York Jets are moving on to next weeks games. Kinda dull today.

Dallas will play at the Vickings on Sunday at 1 pm est.

The Jets will play at Colts if the Ravens lose or they will be at Chargers if the Ravens win.
