  • Aside from collecting John Wayne things, I was wondering what other hobbies do the folks around here have. Do you collect other things? I also do genealogy, and I like to write (although I can't say I do very well!), and I like to read about the history of the American West / Old West, and I collect celebrity autographs. I have a small collection of them, about 15 or 20.

So, let's here from some other folks about their hobbies and what you all do inyour spare time.
    Colorado Bob :P

"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them" It may be time worn, but it's the best life-creed I know.

  • Hi Colorado Bob,
    You make me laugh!!!!!
What with watching Duke films, and being on this message board,
there ain't no time for anything else!!!
    What wife?
    What children,??
    Where are they???
    Who are they????
How long have they all been living with me????

    SAD ISN'T IT??????

    Best Wishes,

  • Well, a few habits ...or hobbies? I guess.
Movie collecting, I have about 500 and I just have to buy at least one (usually more) whenever I go to a store.

Coin collecting, I have been collecting for...well a good 10 years now and enjoy it quite a bit.

Military memrobilia, well my collection is small but mostly this stuff is pre vietnam (mostly WW2) patches, badges and medals etc.

Magazines and books, of many things really...random magazines like video gaming-cowboys and indians-offroading-imports -technology-car and driver, I have thousands of these...in boxes.

  • Wul, heres a bit of my interests outside John Wayne.

I, like IHW, collect Militaria. Mine is about 99% Imperial & WWII German militaria (for now) and I am thinking of branching out to collect US Civil War militaria. I have a few Civil War mini-balls, and a brass button that belongs on a Union soldiers shell jacket.

Nuther interest are old classic movies.

Still anuther hobby is collecting stamps (but not very often) as my stamps are only hollywood related or to do with the military such as battles and personalities.

    Doing Crossword puzzles.

Sittin' on the porch chatting with friends.

    Ridin' bicycles.

And playin' with my Cat, Shasta.

  • Other than the Duke...I also collect Gone with the Wind. Am into Western history, old movies, have dabbled in geneology, love to cook, and am learning to quilt (the things we try for our mothers  ).

  • Hi,

After John Wayne, Like Colorado I like to write, collect film autographs and photographs. Anything to do with movies.

I also watch cricket in the summer and support Portsmouth the local football team which at the moment are struggling in the premiership, but with the return of our old manager may provide an upturn.

I also enjoy home living with my wife Pat.

  • hi colorado bab

hobbies well that ones hard as i dont have the time for them what with a very active 9 yr old, now on the other hand interests i have plenty of, classical music (mainly strings as i used to play violin at school in conserts), my rugby league team the NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS they made it to the finals this year came in as runners up but next year they will be coming home winners. gardening which in the summer months becomes more of a chore the a pleasure, and watching my lad grow up which is some times as much a pleasure as a chore ;) oh and collecting some of the older movies the likes of as one called THE PLANK funny as.

will have to ponder over this some more to see what else i get up to i do like to go for walks with or with out company

    till later hooroo smokey

" its not all black and white, but different shades of grey"

  • My wife has long since toned down my collecting bug, (Just no more room for the kids and she wouldn't let them go :P ), I now just collect currency from other countries. It would be easy just to go to the bank and exchange for them, but that isn't the way I get them. Every time I know someone who goes out of country, I ask them to get me some money. When people find out I collect, they sometimes give me some they had laying around. I've collected quite a bit of older ones that way. I think bills are the coolest. They are so much more colorful than the ones the U.S. puts out. I also collect movies on DVD, but it seems most of us here have that bug. I have a small collection of autographed baseballs. You never realize how much stuff you have till you have to move and start to box things up. Well, I been talking so long, I'm beginning to collect dust now ;)
    Have a goodin'

  • My other hobbies include Turkey hunting, spring and fall. Pheasent hunting. And coyote hunting. That's what has been keeping me away from the boards for the last couple weeks.
I also like to fish. I play a online computer game called Guild Wars.
I also love snowmobiling, when there is snow. That's what else has been taking my time, I have been getting my sled ready for the winter.
And as always, all my above activities are contigent on spending anough time with my 2 kids and wife. Which really doesn't leave me with much else.

Life is hard, its even harder when your stupid!!

I used to collect roman coins, my prized possession is a spartan arrowhead - extremely rare!

I got it from an auction house in London

Weather permitting I go hill-walking with the family

I like reading, especially about the Ancient World, it is fascinating

    Kind Regards

  • Hi John Chisum

Gardening sounds like interesting work, do you have your own business, what sort of jobs do you take on?

  • I'm in Grade 10 at school at the moment, which takes up 3/4 of my life. I love watching Rugby League(go the mighty cowboys!) and Australian Rules Football(go the mighty bombers!), apart from that I'm out on my horse or working with cattle, which takes up quite a lot of my life aswell.

  • I'm retired & caring for my elderly mother, who's got congestive heart failure & is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's, so she's my 24-7 now...

But, when I can.....I love to fish. I have a 16 ft. Sundance boat with a 30HP Mercury, which isn't very fast, but it fulfills my needs. My former post commander & I (along with some other retired troopers) occasionally make trips to Astor, FL to fish for speckled perch & that is always a great time. Since my Mom has worsened in the past year or so, I haven't had much time to fish though. We both love Pat Summitt & Tennessee Lady Vol basketball & we spend most of the winter following their successes. (Tournament time is upon us now!) I also enjoy military history, specifically WWII & Vietnam. Both of my parents served during WWII. My Dad was with the Mighty 8th Air Corps in Folkstone, England & my Mom was a WAC, working with the Air Transport Command in Memphis, TN. I am currently researching the four servicemen from Folkston, GA who died in Vietnam & preparing articles for our local paper in order to get them the recognition that they did not receive at the times of their death. As the 40th anniversary of their deaths are upon us, I have had one article published & I'm currently working on the article ref. the 2nd serviceman. I still maintain my contacts with my law enforcement brothers & sisters & follow their careers. Plus, I spend a little time seeing just how much information I can find out about John Wayne. Imagine that....

  • Dexter,

Thank you for sharing all this with us folks here on the board. I can relate to your efforts with your Mother, as my Father had similar problems.

On a more humorous note, a lot of stories have been generated about men looking for a woman who likes to fish, and have their own boat and motor. Sounds like you're a very popular Lady. :D . . . . Especially if you enjoy watching John Wayne movies, too. :D

  • Dexter,

That was a touching post, and thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
See, I told you we were a friendly bunch!

By the way, I don't fish, but I could learn!!

    Best Wishes,

  • Hello All
I collect Political Buttons. On a trip to Quartzite my parents found a set of old Presidential campaign buttons that I am pretty fond of. I also collect other types of buttons but do not buy them I just ask for one if someone is wearing a promotional one. I got started on buttons when my wife and I were running a Scout troop and one of the lads used buttons to get his collectors badge. I started getting some for him and just never really stopped. I am not sure if you could call it a hobby but I like to listen to people tell of their life experiences. I have hunted birds and fished before but not for many years. We were partners on a small sailboat but that became part of a mortgage. I like to kyak on decent days. I like to read what people post on this board. I especially like to watch our kids interact with each other and the rest of the world. I like to walk the shoreline of the ocean with the dog and or family. The shorebirds calling and the sound of small waves brings me peace. I like to wrestle with my appetite, it's a win win fight, either healthy or tasty. murray

Greetings from North of the 49th

  • Well I have just recently became a single dad of four, three girls 15,9,5 and a boy, 3. (my wife left) Most of my time is spent interacting with them, well ok, that takes ALL my time. :D Thats not a bad thing. I got laid off my job of 14 years, a year ago and have just now started a job building websites. The best part is I get to work from home, so my kids can never get rid of me... lol When I do manage to have time and money all at once I love to go golfing. Nothing like a nice course early in the morning. I'm also in the process of writing a couple books, at least I think thats what I'm doing. Let's see, other than John Wanye movies I don't really collect anything, oh I have a few Elvis movies, but those come way after my JW stuff. Oh yeah I love to ride motorcycles, but I had to sell mine a few months back :( but I'm sure I'll get one again. Man I can't end with that, ummm well I guess I have to...

You can roll a turd in powdered sugar but that doesn’t make it a doughnut.

  • Let's see, other hobbies....I found this old thread while doing a search for motorcycles, which by the way is my hobby...I love riding my Harley Davidson Vrod Muscle. Are there any other motorcycle riders on here???

I also found a few links (in case you missed it) to some pics Chester posted way back when regardin Duke and bikes:

    Hope that worked.

I also make beaded jewelry and do the craft show circuit, although since college started I've had to stop (no time)...looking forward to getting back into it once I'm done though.
