John Wayne
stood head and shoulders above anyone else
as the greatest star of the silver screen.
Never did he shine more brightly then in Westerns
Here at the JWMB we are proud to acknowledge
the contribution that other great western movie stars
have made to the genre
Some of the stars were to co-star and feature with Duke
in numerous collaborations.
In honour of these greats we have now formed
these dedicated threads:-
Gary Cooper
KIrk Douglas
Clint Eastwood
Errol Flynn
Henry Fonda
Burt Lancaster
Joel McCrea
Robert Mitchum
Gregory Peck
Randolph Scott
James Stewart

Western Musicals
No formula series Westerns are included, thus nothing of Tom Mix, Buck Jones,
Tim McCoy, John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Rex Allen,
Charles Starrett, Al 'Lash' LaRue or Whip Wilson.
These actors as protagonists, make almost any western worth seeing:-
John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood,
Errol Flynn, Henry Fonda, Glen Ford, Charlton Heston, William Holden,
Burt Lancaster, Joel McCrea, Audie Murphy, Robert Mitchum,
Gregory Peck, Robert Ryan, Randolph Scott, and James Stewart
In the recent years of this list, a number of Westerns shown only on
TV and released on video are named, as very few theatrical Westerns
are made today and some of the 'made-for-TV' are actually better than
some that saw carbon arc projection.
Although the plots and story lines in the Westerns from the 50's and early 60's
were no different from the cowboys of the 30's and 40's
technology, cinematography etc. moved on tremendously
A few Westerns in recent years have provided unique entertainment.
we've accepted recommendations by others for inclusion and exclusion.
We have hopefully included movies that are
Classic, memorable or notable
It appears, though, that the Western in recent years
has ventured into some very weird territory.
However where does 'Classic' begin and
where does it end?
More recent offerings may indeed be
the Classic's of the the future
